Joy is in the air...its December...Christmas will soon be here...the excited anticipation ofwatching children is joy within itself... I love to watch their faces and wish I could know what is pass-
ing through their minds. I suspect the expressions are pretty close to the thoughts. My friend told me
the other day that her three year old was so excited to know that Christmas was Jesus birthday that
she could not wait to go to school and tell her teacher...now to just remember that is what the joy isall about.
Gee what an interesting year 2010 has been, one filled with many changes, some great, andothers I could have done without, but as I walked through those valleys with my brightly tabbed
Bible leading me immediately to verses of healing and hope, I captured incredible peace. Therefore, I
had a swift recovery from chest surgery to remove a mass from behind my breastbone and one in my
lung. Credit for my swift recovery is also attributed to my prayer warriorsand to my wonderfulnurseJack took such good care of me. In fact, I thought I was ready to go after about 10 daysbut
the nursing police, as I lovingly dubbed my care-giver, reigned me in. He was right...as he always is.
In anticipation of a new year and new beginnings , Im giving life to an old dream that I put
on a shelf a couple years ago. It will take me a while to get all my thoughts back together, but it is
worth the commitment to use my creative energies to accomplish. Do you have a dream that you letgo by the wayside for one reason or another? I encourage you to rekindle the desire. Im believingit can happen. Im going to live LARGE.join me...
May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace, The gladness of Christmas give you hope, the warmth
of Christmas grant you love...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

National Tie Month. Celebratethe necktie, especially because 20
percent of all neckties are purchasedin December, presumably as holi-
day gifts. Fashion tip, from proto-col expert Nemo Turner: The
proper length for wearing the every-
day long tie, whether it is for
business or social events, is that itmust go just to the bottom of the
belt, and NEVER above or below
the belt. (www.protocolpower.com)
An apple a day may be true, but
some health lore isntEveryone knows that you shouldnt swim within an
hour after eating, a glass of warm milk helps youfall asleep, and doctors always save the patient righ
before the last commercial. Right?
Maybe, but youre right to be skeptical. Many common beliefs about health dont hold up to
clinical research (and once in a while a TV patientdies). In the winter months, although you do need to
dress warmly, you dont need to worry about theseoften repeated words of advice:
Dont go outside with damp hair. Your head
will get chilly, but chances are you wont catch cold. Colds are caused by viruses (over 200),
and most people contract them by coming into
contact with someone who already has a cold
People may tend to catch cold more readily during the winter because theyre inside more, and
closer to other people who may carry the virusnot simply because the weather is cold.
Feed a cold, starve a fever. Or is it the otherway around? Whatever the saying is, you dont
want to avoid eating when youre sick (even if
you dont feel much like it) because your bodyneeds the nutrients to fight infection. Drinking
plenty of fluids and getting lots of rest are the
most dependable ways to get well quickly.
You lose 75 percent of your body heat
through your head. Youll lose heat through
whatever part of your body is exposed to cold
temperatureshead, hands, arms, legs, etc.
Yes, keep your head covered when outdoors inthe winter, but keep the rest of your body warm
as well.
Keeping your body healthy is an expression of grati-
tude to the whole cosmosthe trees, the clouds,
everything. Thich Nhat Hanh

First date: Dress sharp, bring flowers, dont forget couponA romantic first date doesnt have to cost a fortune, does it? Not according to a growing number ofwouldbe Romeos (and Juliets), says Red Plum, which offers coupons and other savings deals to
consumers online, in print media, and elsewhere.
Its study of over 16,000 consumers found that 78 percent said theyd use a money-savingcoupon for a first-date movie, and 77 percent would use coupons for a restaurant meal on an initial
date. (No data on how many of those got a second date, though.)

.ItsaWonderfulLife.We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehemand a light that is not of the sun or of the stars
shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty ofthe story take away all narrowness, all thought
of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as astory that has happened again and again, to men
of many different races, that has been expressedthrough many religions, that has been called by
many different names. Time and space and lan-
guage lay no limitations upon human brother-
hood. New York Times, 25 December 1937.

HUMMMM.Xmas or Christmas?
Food for thought.Contrary to many Christians belief (and mine), the word
Xmas is not sacrilegious or irreverent. The letter X is the first letter
of Christs name in Greek and has often been used as a holy symbol.
Xmas, this abbreviation of Christmas is of Greek origin. TheWord for Christ in Greek is Xristos. The X is the Greek letter Chi
(sounds like ki) which has a k sound. Hence Xristos is pro-nounced Christ in modern English. During the 16th century,Europeans began using the first initial of Christs name, X in place
of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word.
Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christsname, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language
mistook Xmas as a sign of disrespect...as many do today.
The history of Christmas customs
What are the original means of some of our mostbeloved Christmas customs? Many of these customs
originated in older pagan traditions, rather than in theChristian tradition in which they are celebrated.
The celebration of Christmas on Dec. 25 was not
regulated to that date until the fourth century by PopeSaint Julius I. The Pope, it seems, was trying to round
up a passel of pagan festivities into one date and took the
opportunity to turn them into a Christian celebration.Dec. 25 previously had marked the Roman Saturnalia
(the day when the sun ebbed lowest in the year). Mithra,
the Persian Sun god, had his birthday then, too. AndOdin, a Norse god, also appeared to the world on thatday.
Overeating and drinking are related to the Satur-
nalia. Saturn, an agriculture god, was related to feastingin tahe winter, a practice that in ancient times would
have been important to help people survive the long,
sometimes famine-ridden winters.
Todays Christmas pudding has a long historygoing all the way back to the Celts, who celebrated their
god of the harvest by making a pot of porridge and stir
ring it for him. Later plum pudding was made by addiprunes to the porridge, and that evolved into what we
now know as Christmas pudding. Tradition says that
each member of the family should stir the pot in an easwest manner (as the sun moves across the sky). Flamin
brandy poured onto the pudding is also a symbol of the
suns energy. The first Christmas stocking was derived from
the charity of a kindly Turkish bishop, who slipped a b
of gold into the stocking of a girl in need of a dowry.
And its true that Santa never wore red and whiuntil he was popularized by the Coca-Cola Company
wearing the company colors.
Decorating Christmas trees has its origins in thDark Ages of Germany, the idea being to encourage tre
spirits, who deserted the forests during the winter, to
want to return to the trees to reawaken them again in th
spring. This originally focused on oak trees, but latercame to be associated with fir trees by the Christians,
because they likened the triangle outline of the firs wit
that of the Holy Trinity.- adapted from theNew
