PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our first workshop of the year we had so much fun with lots of laughter painting a Mandala with Stephanie Pooler, learning this technique to a fun design. We had two new guests with us, Mary Higdon’s grandson Isaac and a longtime friend of T.

Kay White, Susan. We welcome our guests and look forward to painting with them again soon! We discussed and then approved with a vote to make our Points Reward Tracker a Chapter committee, assigning the same points for the year as the other committees. We also voted to retroactively award Rewards Points to Penny Brown who did an excellent job developing this system in 2019. Penny Brown and Dianne Case, as our Spring Fling Co-Chairs have, with the help of several other members, Stephanie, Pam and Judy painted and donated a true work of art, a small trunk with lighthouses on each side and the top for our main raffle drawing (“Special Raffle”). The tickets are already printed and being sold. Be sure to see Dianne for tickets to sell. There are still tables available to sign up for - this is our only fund raiser! Such a good time for all! Consider signing up to head a table. All Chapter service is rewarded with points now. So all you do for the Chapter trickles down to the members. Committee chair and volunteer position sign-up sheets are at Chapter each month - so consider volunteering! And don’t forget to fill out your reward voucher each month you participate, and turn it into Penny for tracking. ~ Debi Crook

WORKSHOP TEACHER GUIDELINES

One of the key aims of our monthly workshops is to develop the skills of each participant, in order to promote greater enjoyment of painting. Toward that end, teachers are urged to exercise the following guidelines.

1. Explain the use of your medium, and how is best applied to the surface for your project.

2. Describe which brushes work best for the application of medium.

3. Teaching of any special technique (e.g. line work, floating, dry brushing, etc.) should be demonstrated, to show how the technique is best used for your project. Keep a practice board at your side to show, on-screen, how the skill is done.

4. Since we have new painters and we are trying to encourage both chapter membership and interest in painting, be especially mindful of the newest painters and their needs.

5. Circulate throughout the class, check on the progress of each person, and provide individual assistance to the extent possible.

6. Ask if anyone needs assistance, periodically, during your class.

7. Be mindful of your students’ painting pace; ask if everyone is ready to move on. Give an extra few moments if necessary.

8. Ask the class if they need a break.

9. Ask what time would be good for a lunch break.

2020 WORKSHOP NEWS

Here are some 2020 Workshop updates: First of all, thanks to Stephanie Pooler for presenting the Mandala in January. Second, the membership voted for Bonnie Rand’s Patriotic Owl for the March 7th Workshop. Your needed information is posted on the DAO web site under Workshops. Third, Stephanie Pooler will not be able to present Hydrangeas in June. Happily, Lyn Williams has stepped forward to teach the June Workshop! Stay tuned, and we will let you know details. Remember, 2020 Chapter Workshops have been posted on the DAO website. Click on “Workshops” and register your planned attendance at any time. The 2020 Workshop Calendar may be found in the right-hand column of this newsletter.

2020 SPRING FLING LESS THAN 3 MONTHS AWAY

We still have tables available for would-be Table Captains and Co-Captains to create artistic touches! Think about creating Raffle Baskets, Raffle items and Live Auction items. Plenty of tickets left for the Special Raffle Light Houses Trunk, too.

Incidentally, the DAO Board has worked out upgraded Rewards Points in recognition of various contributions to our Spring Fling!

See information below. ~ Penny Brown

STUDENT GUIDELINES

1. Be prepared! Bring your supplies. Make sure you have any special supplies requested by the teacher, and bring a PREPARED SURFACE if not provided. Trying to basecoat a surface right before the class is to begin does not give the paint time to cure properly and may make your painting experience more difficult.

2. Don’t expect your neighbor to be your instructor. Ask the teacher for help. This reduces the chatter so everyone can hear the teacher. You might be missing out on important instructions.

3. Use every class as a learning experience regardless of the level of difficulty. Every new technique learned needs practice.

4. Let the teacher know if you are unfamiliar with a technique or medium featured. This will let the teacher know you may need a little extra help during class.

5. Bring an extra surface or practice board you can practice on before painting on your project if you know ahead of time that you are challenging your skill level.

6. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are learning new techniques during the class. It is difficult to master a new technique the first time.

And – PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!SAVE

Stephanie Pooler provided the layout of the Mandala to each participant, and here demonstrates the beginning of the piece.

Here, Stephanie nears completion of the painting.

MANDALA

A mandala is a spiritual and/or ritual geometric configuration of symbols or a map in the Indian religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism or Japanese religion of Shintoism, representing deities, paradises, or shrines. In modern, typically American use, “mandala” has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically. The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T.

One can design a mandala to symbolize a state of mind you would like to achieve. Mandalas are great tools for meditation and increasing self-awareness. Once you know the basic steps of how to draw a mandala, you can try new designs and new colors each time you draw a new mandala.
