Rolling Hands Free! Phone Contacts Hack Keeps

You Safe and Legal

As everyone knows, it is illegal and extremely unsafe to use a hand held cell phone while operating a CMV. It is, however, legal to use a hands free cell phone.

Hands free means just that, hands free. If you have voice activated dialing on your headset, you can still contact dis-patch or breakdown without the need to manually navigate the phone tree (illegal) by editing your contacts.

The comma acts as a pause. So to create a contact for Compliance using this hack, the number in your contact list will look like 800-748-0192,4,1. When you use your voice activated headset to “Call Compliance”, the new number with the commas will navigate the phone tree and direct your call to Compliance automatically!

Now you can create separate contacts using commas, and the extensions for your Dispatch board, breakdown etc. will automatically be dialed.

Trailer Safety Inspection is Critical to Our Success!

By Jeff Wood & Jason Stout

Martin Transportation Systems regards the pre-trip and post-trip inspection as one of the most important duties that our drivers have to perform. You come into contact with our trailers at a much higher rate than any mechanic or other MTS employee. It is your primary responsibility to ensure that the trailer is safe not just by DOT minimum standards, but also safe to our standards and our customer’s standards. Drivers must ensure that the trailer is structurally sound, and report anything that is suspicious, including body damage, missing rivets, and landing gear issues. Don’t take trailers with the below-listed issues into customers!

Trailer Base Rail

The base rail is composed of two separate rails (top rail and bottom rail) that give the trailer frame the structural strength needed to hold freight. Interior and exterior damage can weaken the structural integrity of the base rail. To properly inspect the base rail you must walk the length of the trailer inside and out, when practical.

Metal patchwork covering base rail is unacceptable!

Caulk used to replace rivets is unacceptable!

Exterior Sidewall Damage

Should the sidewall of the trailer be pushed inward or outward you must immediately notify the shop foreman at your terminal. This is an indication that interior rivets could be sheared off and will affect the structural integrity of the trailer.

Much of the structural integrity of the base rail comes from the rivets that hold it in place. Missing rivets over a section of the exterior or interior of the trailer can cause the trailer floor drop out (zipper).

NOTE: Drivers are not allowed on any dock at any customer. Do not attempt to walk onto the dock to inspect the trailer while being loaded / unloaded at any customer!

Exterior Rivet Damage

MTS Digest Page 3Trailer Safety Inspection is Critical to Our Success! Continued...

Interior DamageIf you are able to inspect the interior of the trailer – you should be looking for any gouges, metal shavings, sheared rivets, metal skin pushed outward/in-ward, or holes punched in the sidewalls and, especially, the roof.

Trailer that zippered due to missing rivets.

Landing Gear Issues

Zippering is not the only safety issue that we should be looking for when hooking to a trailer. The second greatest danger that any driver or fork lift driver can face is a failed landing gear. You must inspect all landing gear and report any issues.

The landing pads, K Braces (middle braces extending upward and outward to the dolly legs), and side support braces must all be in place and connected. All braces must be in place and connect-ed. If you have issues cranking the dolly legs up or down this can indicate a possible issue with the internal mechanism and needs to be reported immediately. If you have any of these issues – or if the landing gear does not look like the image shown below – you need to take the trailer to the shop immediately for inspection.

MTS Digest Page 4

Cross Member Issues

Any damage to the cross members (the ribs of the trailer) can also cause a trailer to zipper, or a forklift to fall through the floor. The most common damage to the cross members is trailer skin rubbing or cutting. This happens when a trailer is hit by another passing trailer causing many indentations down the side of the trail-er (shown below), causing you to be able to see each individual cross member. This damage automatically makes the trailer unfit for service and needs to be put out of service and reported to the shop foreman immediately.

Other damage includes cracked or bent cross members which will be noticed when you look underneath the trailer. Any bent or cracked cross members need to be reported to the shop foreman as well and the trailer needs to be put out of service.

Tandem Slider Box Issues

Prior to dropping a trailer (in the yard or a dock door) or traveling on a public highway, you must ensure the following:

1) Tandems are in the correct position. Trailer tandems must be all of the way to the rear and properly locked before dropping at a dock door. Tandems must be at a legal distance from the kingpin before traveling on a public highway. 2) Tandem Release Lever is in the locked position – The lever should always be in the locked position before dropping a trailer or traveling on a public highway3) Slider pins are present and locked properly through the rail4) The sliding rail is aligned properly – if the rail is not sliding or if the rail is not properly aligned you must contact breakdown / or the shop foreman immediately.

Failure to ensure that the tandems are properly locked can cause injury to dock workers loading / unloading of your trailer.

While traveling on a public roadway, unlocked tandems will slam to the back with great force when the trail-er brakes are applied. This can cause the tandems to break through the steel stops at the rear of the trailer, causing a huge accident. You have zero control over your tandems when they eject out the back!

Brake Inspection Blitz Set for September

Inspectors will be keying in on brake safety again this September when the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week takes place Sept. 11-17.

Across North America, law enforcement agencies will conduct inspections on commercial vehicles to look for out-of-adjustment brakes, and brake system and anti-lock braking system violations during the week.

Specifically, CVSA says inspectors will be looking for “loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake system components.” Inspectors will also be checking ABS malfunction indicator lights to make sure they’re in working order, CVSA says. Defective or out-of-adjustment brakes will result in the vehicle being placed out-of-service.Most inspections occurring during the week will be full Level I inspections, according to CVSA, and 10 jurisdictions will be using performance-based brake testing to measure braking efficiency.

During 2015’s brake inspection spree, inspectors conducted 18,817 inspections and placed 2,321 of those trucks out-of-service – or 12.3 percent.

Are you “just dying” to read that latest text?

Texting while driving is a national epidemic, quickly becoming one of the country’s top killers. Drivers assume they can handle texting while driving and remain safe, but the numbers don’t lie.

Texting While Driving Causes:

1. 1,600,000 accidents per year – National Safety Council.2. 330,000 injuries per year – Harvard Center for Risk Analysis Study.3. Kills an average of 11 teens EVERY DAY – Ins. Institute for Hwy Safety Fatality Facts.4. Is the cause of at least 25% of ALL accidents.

Texting While Driving Is:

1. About 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. 2. The same as driving after 4 beers – National Hwy Transportation Safety Admin.3. Illegal in a tractor trailer. Everywhere, always. Texting While Driving:

1. Makes you 23 times more likely to crash – National Hwy Transportation Safety Admin.2. Is the same as driving with your eyes closed for at least 5 seconds at a time – VA. Tech Transportation Institute,3. Slows your brake reaction speed by 18% – Human Factors & Ergonomics Society,4. Leads to a 400% increase in time with eyes off the road.

OK, so besides messing with your phone, now roll in your time each day spent messing around in the cab with food, drinks, CDs, the radio, smokes, vape pen, paperwork, GPS …

Be honest with yourself. How much time do you risk your life – and someone else’s – every single day with distracted driving? Head up, eyes up, distractions down. Only way to drive!

Michigan Pilot State for Roadside Drug Testing

The state of Michigan will implement a pilot program later this year that will allow police to conduct roadside saliva tests to determine the presence of drugs in a driver’s system.

The law, signed recently by Gov. Rick Snyder, allows the Michigan State Police to create a one-year pilot program in five counties to be named later in which troopers that are “certified drug recognition experts” can conduct the tests during traffic stops if it appears the driver is under the influence.

“This is common sense legislation that empowers our law enforcement officials to conduct roadside tests for drugs so we can help make Michigan’s roads safer,” said Sen. Tom Casperson, sponsor of the bill.

Troopers that have gone through the training to become certified drug recognition experts could conduct the test at roadside by swabbing the saliva of a driver. The test can determine the presence of Schedule 1-5 controlled substances, much like a breathalyzer detects alcohol.

Casperson said if the pilot proves to be reliable, roadside drug testing could be implemented statewide.

The law, dubbed the Barbara J. and Thomas J. Swift Law, comes after the couple, both age 73 at the time, were killed in a 2013 crash with a logging truck. The driver of the truck, Harley Davidson Durocher, was found to have marijuana in his system after the wreck.

Nicole Pellegrini joins MTS as Employee Support Specialist

By Troy Scott - Director of Human Resources

With a growing mobile workforce, MTS recently hired Nicole Pellegrini in the Human Resource Department to focus on employee support. As Nicole puts it, “I have a passion and commitment for people to help resolve issues that MTS drivers and non-drivers experience at any of our terminal locations.” Nicole has embraced her new

role by leading a new “live chat” feature for MTS employees accessible from our MTS website or by selecting “Contact Us” on our Facebook page. When live chat is unavailable, typed messages can be left. “We want any employee with a question, to get an answer,” Nicole said. Nicole was previously an employee recruiter and will also help MTS recruit for dispatchers, mechanics and other administrative open positions. As part of her recruitment effort, Nicole is leading new internship programs at various terminal locations to help promote our company with various colleges and vocational institutions. “We are always looking for great talent!”

Nicole enjoys interacting with employees and she wants to provide a healthy dose of interesting company news and in-formation to employees using our social media channels. “We have so many fun and interesting employees across the country with great stories to tell. I hope to share employee stories and accomplishments with every-one here at MTS.”

Nicole’s favorite motto? “Do not wait for the perfect moment, take any moment and make it perfect!”

MTS Movie Review - Kurt RussellBy Regina Wood - Billing/AR Manager

For our second trucking movie review, instead of focusing on the top 10 list, I decided to choose my movie based on Kurt Russell. Because I like him. I tried very hard to justify doing a review on Tombstone since it does have a train, and that IS interstate commerce. My

trucking-centric husband/editor didn’t buy it.

But the internet is your friend, so I went looking for other trucking movie lists that have one by Kurt Russell. And I found one! “Big Trouble in Little China” is a John Carpenter/Kurt Russell movie from 1986. Originally written as a Western, it morphed into a martial arts movie with a truck driver, and John Carpenter’s predictable synthesizer score.

Not a huge hit in the theaters; it has since become a cult classic. In the interest of full disclosure, I admit to my friends on these pages I actually paid to see it in the theater during its original release. Did I mention I like Kurt Russell?

As you expect, Kurt Russell plays the hero, Jack Burton. In a bit of change-up, he’s a bumbling hero. Burton is a truck driver with a John Wayne accent and swagger. While pulling into Chinatown to drop a load, he meets up with his friend, Wang Chi. Chi talks him into bobtailing to the airport to pick up Wang’s fiancée. Things go haywire right off the plane when she gets kidnapped by a Chinese street gang.

Things get odder when it is found that she has green eyes, and a powerful local wizard needs her to end his curse so he can regain human form. Things get really weird when some sewer monster joins the mayhem. Things just go full-on stupid when, in the final fight scene, people explode. If you

think you’re seeing actors you’ve seen in other Carpenter movies, that’s because you are. He likes to work with his friends whenever possible.

How does all of this relate to truck driving? We are first introduced to Jack playing late night entertainer, talking up a CB radio BS storm to anyone in range while driving his Freightliner, the Pork Chop Express. While chasing after the gang that stole his pal’s fiancée, Jack and Wang go down Chinatown back alleys in Jack’s bobtail. They dead end smack in the middle of a street fight between rival gangs.

Here we learn Jack apparently has a magical Freightliner, since it was in the middle of a gun fight, in a narrow alley, without getting hit even once. After literally driving over/through the evil wizard, Jack has to abandon his beloved tractor and escape.

In a wonderful reality check, we listen to Jack on the phone, on hold with his insurance company, complaining about the $6,000 he pays a year in premiums. The insurance carrier can’t seem to figure out who he is. So he decides rather than file a claim, it’s easier to just go steal his truck back from the homicidal gang. Since the same people who have his truck also have his buddy’s girl, why not combine both into one rescue mission!

Big Trouble in Little China is a fun and campy romp through the backrooms and sewers of Chinatown. It might make you roll your eyes once in a while, but hey, it’s trucks, Kung Fu wire-fights, and oriental black magic with cheesy 80’s special effects. And it has the magnificent Kurt Russell, so all is forgiven.

**TIRES | CVSA Vehicle Committee “voted to add language to the OOSC establishing a new OOS condition for debris between tires in a dual set.” A “solid object lodged between tires” now constitutes an out-of-service condition.

**LIGHTS | Situations where a trailer pigtail was “left unplugged, had become unplugged in transit, or [had] a defect in the cord or a connector,” are now out-of-service conditions. “After a lengthy discussion,” the CVSA round-up notes, “the Committee agreed that a reasonable violation for this situation would be to cite § 393.23,” having to do with lamps’ power supply, “and place the vehicle OOS.”

**STEERING MECHANISM | The same committee previously voted to “add language to the OOSC making a missing power assist cylinder an OOS condition,” in addition to refining current criteria that made a loose cylinder an OOS condition to better specify just how loose.

**DRIVELINE/DRIVESHAFT | New language reflects a “missing bearing cap retainer clip” as an OOS condition. An “imminent hazard exists,” CVSA says, “when a U-joint bearing cap retainer clip is not seated in the groove.”

It Only Takes a Second……….

Things can go wrong in an instant. Think it can’t

happen to you? It can! Just ask the (now former)

MTS drivers that have had preventable accidents

in the last year due to texting and driving, eating

while driving, lighting cigarettes, taking their

eyes off the road for various reasons, trying to

change clothes while driving or just plain not

paying attention. It only takes a second!

DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU!!!
