The primary movement is from your diaphragm. 3) Allow your lungs to fill naturally, with no effort. 4) Perform this cycle 10 times, then allow your breathing return to normal and observe the sensations in your body. Deepak Chopra. M.D.Does your intention for the new year relate to increasing your health and wellbeing? Do you aim to better manage a health condition, improve your energy, balance your weight, or build on an already healthy lifestyle?

The simple tips below can help you achieve your goals by incorporating the principles of Ayurveda, the 5,000 year-old Indian health system, into your everyday life.

If these lessons resonate with you and you want to go deeper, we invite you to attend Perfect Health our intimate Ayurvedic immersion workshop held weekly at La Costa Resort & Spa.

3 Ways to Bring Ayurveda into your Everyday Life     1. Exhaling Your Stress    In the midst of stress, we have an unconscious tendency to breathe shallowly and tighten the solar plexus. Kapalabhati or "Shining Breath" is a yogic practice that releases anxiety and cleanses toxins from the body. Here is how to perform Kapalabhati:

1) Sit comfortably in an upright posture and rest your hands on your lower belly. 2) Draw your navel to your spine in a quick motion, forcefully expelling all the air from your lung. The primary movement is from your diaphragm. 3) Allow your lungs to fill naturally, with no effort.  4) Perform this cycle 10 times, then allow your breathing return to normal and observe the sensations in your body. Repeat the cycles of ten three to four times.

*Do not practice Shining Breath if you are pregnant.

principles you can use to move beyond resistance to the fulfillment of your goals:

1. Accept the now. When you accept life as it unfolds, offering no resistance, you become aware of the choices available in this moment. This doesn't imply giving up desires or being a victim, but discovering the freedom to respond creatively.

2. Accept the signals of your body. Feel all of your body's sensations, including sorrow, anger, or a churning stomach. Whereas the mind lives in the past and the future, the body resides in the now and never doubts itself. It knows the truth and will guide you toward the most evolutionary choices. 3. Accept responsibility and commit. With deepened awareness, you can make new choices, let go of habits that no longer serve you, and commit to doing something different.

3. Aromatherapy    Whenever we smell something, whether the rich scent of coffee beans, the earthiness of burning sage, or the sweetness of a rose, we are actually absorbing some of its molecules, making aromatherapy a form of natural medicine. You can use a process known as neuroassociative conditioning to consciously link a healing response to a given smell. First choose a favorite aroma and inhale it whenever you are feeling relaxed, calm or happy. Your body will begin to associate pleasurable feelings with the smell. Before long, just a hint of the fragrance will invoke your inner healing response.

Here are some specific suggestions for balancing fragrances:

Invigorating Cooling Calming

Lemon Jasmine Lavender

Orange Mint Vanilla

Clove Lime Sandalwood

Cinnamon Rose Neroli
