Gorilla Doctors is a real conservation success story. The organization proves that our presence and your visit can change the future of an endangered species. Gorilla Doctors provides veterinary treatment to gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda) and Parc’ Nationales des Volcans (Rwanda). Vets, rangers, guides, and other wildlife conservationists monitor the health of each gorilla. They intervene in emergency situations, observe daily interactions, and note health problems as they develop. Triage is done on site, with great fanfare to distract distraught family members. Namibia supports a unique population of desert-adapted lions that survive in the harsh Namib Desert. The Desert Lion Conservation Project has been studying and monitoring these lions since 1998. As the lion population has increased they range closer to human settlement killing livestock. Farmers have often responded by shooting or poisoning the lions to protect their livelihood. These human-lion conflicts are the biggest threat to these desert lions. The Desert Lion Conservation Project works tirelessly in local communities developing strategies for managing these human-wildlife conflicts.

Deeper Africa guests are able to meet with Dr. Stander to learn more about saving Namibia's desert-adapted lions.

Classic Safaris deliver premier wildlife viewing in one of Deeper Africa’s private Land Cruisers with your own personal

naturalist. It is your guide’s expertise that allows you to follow the wildlife deep within their habitat. Learn animal identification, wildlife tracking, and spotting wildlife in the landscape. Accommodations are comfortable and the food is good. It’s all about the wildlife.

Visit the Save the Elephants Research Camp in Samburu National Park run by longtime elephant researchers Oria and Iain Douglas-Hamilton. Deeper Africa guests have the unique opportunity to join Save the Elephants field researchers in their daily observations of the resident herds in Samburu in northern Kenya. Samburu offers shelter to 66 family units and approximately 100 bulls numbering about 900 elephants. A contribution is made by each Deeper Africa guest to the Elephant Fund projects in Kenya, which support a women’s workshop, a bees and trees project, and educational scholarships for Kenyan students.

Save the Rhino Trust nurtures a unique rhino program in northwest Namibia. The approach is simple, yet effective: offer poachers a more secure livelihood as wildlife guards. Community rangers regularly patrol the black rhino habitat, as well as educate community members on the value of the rhinos to the economic welfare of the people. This is the only desert-specific population of black rhino on earth. Deeper Africa guests can trek black rhinos on foot with the community guides. After 30 years of work by Save the Rhino Trust, rhino numbers have increased five-fold and the region is home to the largest concentration of black rhino surviving on land that has no conservation status.


Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safaris take you into the dense forests of the Virunga Mountains. Spanning Rwanda and Uganda, they protect the last Mountain Gorillas left on the

planet. Trekking to see the gorillas brings you so close to them that you can hear the gorillas vocalize, watch the mothers coddle their young, and observe the antics of the youngsters, never forgetting that the Silverback is in charge! If your preference is chimpanzees, then Uganda and Tanzania deliver. Gombe Stream or Mahale in Tanzania and Kibale Forest or Chambura Gorge in Uganda offer excellent viewing.

Visit the Bwindi Community Hospital, located on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Established in 2003 to provide needed health care to the Batwa pygmies, the hospital has grown from an outreach clinic under a tree to a 112-bed hospital providing quality care to thousands each month. The clinic welcomes you as a guest, where you can meet clinic workers and members of the community, tour the facility, and learn more about rural health issues in Uganda. Deeper Africa makes a charitable donation on a guest's behalf for use by the clinic as needed. Many of our guests continue to support the clinic through their “Friends” of the Bwindi Community Hospital program.

Sea Sense works closely with six Swahili Coast communities in Tanzania to protect endangered marine species such as sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and whale sharks. Disturbing levels of sea turtle slaughter and nest poaching led to Sea Sense stepping forward and developing a community based sea turtle nest monitoring and protection program. Educational campaigns targeted village leaders, local fishermen, and school children. Now 230 nests have been protected and over 10,000 sea turtle hatchings safely returned to the sea. Deeper Africa guests can set their Swahili Coast adventures to view a sea turtle hatching, watch a whale migration, or swim with the whale sharks.
