    PREFACE

    This Defence Standard supersedes

    DEF STAN 40-8 Issue 2dated 7 February 1983

i This Defence Standard summarises the test methods and general requirements for Cord,Lacing and Tape, Lacing including LFH variants for Ministry of Defence (MOD) use.

ii This Defence Standard has been prepared because there is no suitable British or CECCStandard acceptable to the MOD. When a suitable British or CECC Standard becomesavailable this Defence Standard will be amended to implement the British or CECC Standardfor MOD use.

iii This Standard has been agreed by the authorities concerned with its use and is intended tobe used whenever relevant in all future designs, contracts, orders etc and wheneverpracticable by amendment to those already in existence. If any difficulty arises whichprevents application of this Defence Standard, the Directorate of Standardization shall beinformed so that a remedy may be sought.

v Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation to tender or a contract inwhich it is incorporated are to be addressed to the responsible technical or supervisingauthority named in the invitation to tender or contract.

vi This Standard has been devised for the use of the Crown and its contractors in theexecution of contracts for the Crown. The Crown hereby excludes all liability (other than

    GENERALEXAMINATI0N

    Visualexamination

    The specimen shall be visuallyexamined.

The colour shall beblack. Theworkmanship and finishshall be such that thereshall be no visibleeccentricity, pinholes, splits or other defects.

Dimensions The diameter of the specimen shall

be measured. The method ofmeasurement shall be one that doesnot appreciably deform thespecimen.

    The diameter of the

1 mm specimens shall bewithin the limits 1 mmto 1.2 mm

    8.2 TENSILETESTING

The specimen shall be marked at150 mm intervals. the load shall beapplied freely, without anyconstraint and shall take the form ofa weight suspended by thespecimen under test.

    (i) Working load 1 mm nominal diameter

    a. A load of 6.75 kg shall beapplied gradually over a periodof 1 to 1 minutes andmaintained for 5 minutes

    There shall be nobreakage.

(ii) Elongation The specimen shall be measuredwith the load still applied.

Elongation for each 150mm interval shall bewithin the followinglimits:1 mm nominal diameter

    12 mm to 24 mm

(iii) Elasticity The load shall be removed andimmediately after an interval of oneminute the specimen shall bemeasured.

The variation from any150 mm interval shallnot exceed:6 mm for 1 mmnominal diameter.

(iv) Tensile strength The load shall be re-applied andthen increased until breakageoccurs.

Breakage shall occurwith a load notexceeding 16 kg for 1mm nominal diameter.

    TITLE DESCRIPTION REQUIREMENTS

8.3 KNOTTING For this test, a mandrel 6 mmnominal diameter is required. Themandrel shall be subjected to thedry heat and dry cold cycles withthe specimen. The method ofknotting is shown at Annex A.

    (i) Temperature (dryheat)

The specimen and mandrel shall bemaintained at a temperature of35C-38C for 7 days. At the endof the period and while still at thistemperature, the specimen shall beknotted over the mandrel.

There shall be noindication of cracking orother deterioration.

    (ii) Temperature (drycold)

The specimen shall be removedfrom the mandrel. The specimen

and mandrel shall then bemaintained at a temperature -5C to-8C for 6 hours.

At the end of the period and whilestill at this temperature thespecimen shall be knotted over themandrel.

There shall be noindication of cracking orother deterioration.

    8.4.1

    CLIMATIC

    Temperature (dry

    heat)

As in BS 2011: part 2.1 Test B at a

temperature of 85C for 7 days.

    (i) Flexibility At the end of the period whilst atthe high temperature the cord shall

be closely wound three times undera tension of 0.5 kg on a 6 mmdiameter mandrel which has beenconditioned with the specimens. Asuitable method is described inAnnex B.

There shall be noindication of cracking orany other deterioration.

    8.4.2 Temperature (dry

    cold)

As in BS 2011: Part 2.1 Test A at a

temperature of -40C (-30C forLFH) for 6 hours

    (i) Flexibility At the end of this period whilst stillat this temperature the cord shall beclosely wound three times under atension of 0.5 kg on a 25 mmdiameter mandrel. The mandrelshall be conditioned with thespecimen. A suitable method isdescribed in Annex B.

There shall be noindication of cracking orany other deterioration.

    8.5 DAMP HEAT(long term)

As in BS 2011: Part 2.1 Test Ca.

    8.5.1 Initialmeasurement

The specimen shall be marked at150 mm intervals and the followingmeasurement shall first be made, ifnot already recorded.

Dimensions The diameter of the specimen shallbe measured. The method ofmeasurement shall be one that doesnot appreciably deform thespecimen.

The diameter of the1 mm specimen shall bewithin the limits 1 mmto 1.2 mm

    8.5.2 Final measure-ments

The specimen shall be subjected tothe conditions described in BS 2011

Part 2.1 for 21 days after which itshall be removed from the chamberand subjected to the following tests:

    (i) Visualexamination

    The specimen shall be visuallyexamined.

There shall be no visibleindication ofdeterioration in thematerials used.

(ii) Dimensions The diameter of the specimen shallbe measured. The method ofmeasurement shall be one that does

    not appreciably deform thespecimen.

The diameter of the1 mm specimen shall bewithin the limits 1 mm

    to 1.2 mm

(iii) Shrinkage The marked intervals shall bemeasured

The shrinkage at any 150mm interval shall not begreater than 8 mm forthe 1.0 mm nominaldiameter

(iv) Tensile testing The specimen shall be marked at150 mm intervals. The load shall

    be applied freely, without any

constraint and shall take the form ofa weight suspended by thespecimen under test.

    (v) Working load 1 mm nominal diameter

    a. A load of 6.75 kg shall beapplied gradually over a periodof 1 to 1 minutes andmaintained for 5 minutes.

As in BS 2011: Part 2.1 Test J. Thespecimens should be cut to suitablelengths, such that when supportedupright in a glass specimen tubeapproximately 50% of the lengthwill protrude above the top of itssupporting tube.

    (i) Visualexamination

    The specimen shall be visuallyexamined.
