SCENARIO A member of the hospital Board calls the administrator

to tell about a complaint received from a recently dis- charged patient of the hospital. The member requests ac- cess to the patient’s medical record to review the file and then take whatever further steps are necessary to resolve the issue.

The administrator has not dealt with such a request before but knows that there is no policy in the policy manual deal- ing with the release of medical record information. The ad- ministrator quickly considers a set of responses to the Board member and then offers one of the five listed below.
