Dave– 23 years old

– Lives back at home with his parents in Uxbridge

– He enjoys going to his local pub, bike rides, and cooking noodles at home

– He loves summer months, and dreads the winter when everything gets dark and cold. Money is an issue, and finding a job seems near impossible. Dave enjoys being at home for his mums cooked meals, but can’t wait to move out when he can with his girlfriend.

– Daves typical day: get up late, have a late breakfast, play some computer games, text his girlfriend, look on-line for jobs, play more computer games, check facebook throughout the day, have dinner with his parents in the evening, and pop to the pub every now and again to see his old mates.

– Dave finds Facebook a useful tool. His friends from Uni send him invitations to events that are happening near them, but sometimes too far for dave.

– Using BBM (Blackberry messenging), facebook, skype

Focused Q

• For graduates/young professionals, they might feel disconnected from their local community.

• How can we empower a whole community, by strengthening the connections between young graduates/professionals, and local communities? Also, how can local communities make good use of young peoples new skills, returning home?

Page 7: Define Phase - Jenny Schneider

Design Brief• The Client: People aged: 18-26 - recent graduates/juniors at work

• Key Problem: Dis-connected to their local community, tend to miss/not see locally run activities, minimal/lack of money, winter months - difficult to leave house, enjoys using coffee shops/pubs to meet friends

• Background: London (Urban and rural parts included)

• Aims & Objectives: To empower local communities, by including and integrating young adults/professionals to a hub (a location that has similar attributes to a pub), especially in winter months. Create a communication network that is transparent for young professional to find potential jobs, apply/swap their skills locally (especially if unemployed), and use it to expand peoples local friend networker.

• Target audience & Stakeholders: Integrating local communities and young professionals, that may or may not have a job. The key is to create a platform that skills may be swapped, and relationships created; thus forming a tighter and happier community.

2. How does weather affect what activities you do?

Highly5/12/2011 23:54Often less likely to go for a walk3/12/2011 9:13Minimal2/12/2011 22:43If it's raining, parks are off the list. Maybe the pub. But most likely just at home or convening at a friends house.2/12/2011 22:36In the winter months visits to the park are being replaced with indoor activities.30/11/2011 20:11I will wear a coat if it is cold or raining. I probably would not go to do an outside environment such as a park if the weather was bad.30/11/2011 18:41I don't leave the house when I'm cold. When It's sunny I do.30/11/2011 17:50Very little, unless it is extreme weather.30/11/2011 16:22Feel like staying in when is dark outside unless im off to a bar30/11/2011 16:06When the weather is bad I am more likely to stay in or take stuff t go30/11/2011 14:38Depends on the activity, but will always have some bearing on my decsion making30/11/2011 14:18Limits the opportunities and activities greatly,30/11/2011 14:18

3. What activities do you enjoy in colder months, and why?

Drinking, keeps you warm5/12/2011 23:54Drinking coffee in coffee shops, because it feels cosy!3/12/2011 9:13Gym- can do it any weather. Christmas Shopping. Food shopping2/12/2011 22:43Sitting by a warm fire - It's damn cozy and festive! A nice pint at the pub, again preferably with an open fire - like the sense of being with people in a cosy friendly place.2/12/2011 22:36Going to the pub to relax and spend more time cooking indoors as it gets dark earlier and in the morning you sleep more than in the summer when you get the chance.30/11/2011 20:11Drinking soup out of a mug, after being out in the cold, whilst looking out of a window back out at the cold and sitting in proximity to a fire so that I myself am warm.30/11/2011 18:41Anything indoors/heated. Because I'm always freezing.30/11/2011 17:50Walk/cycle to the pub because they got fires in it, innit!30/11/2011 16:22Watching films, cosy.30/11/2011 16:06Coffee dates, pubs, vacations to a cabin30/11/2011 14:38Indoor activities, because its warmer. playing football in the park (its easier to get a group of mates together than in the summer months when everyone is constantly boozing, believe it or not)30/11/2011 14:18Indoor sports(as it is indoor) foraging & baking (as i can then eat apple/blackberry pie)30/11/2011 14:18

5. What changes would most improve your local neighbourhood? (Please state your location/borough)

More bars5/12/2011 23:54

Peckham/Nunhead - a tube link would be amazing3/12/2011 9:13

South West: better transport2/12/2011 22:43

Better kept house exteriors. Better policing. Would be nice if 'chav' types could learn how manners work. Better presented high street areas with a more welcoming feel. - Gravesend, Kent. Gravesham2/12/2011 22:36

Haringay. Cleaner streets will make it better.30/11/2011 20:11

Less peeing on the streets, less drugs, less sick, less litter. Cheaper alternatives, as I sometimes I cannot afford to go out and enjoy the neighborhood (Shoreditch). A method of finding out what is going on nearby would be useful because lots of funky stuff goes on but more often than not you only find out about it afterwards or stumble upon it by chance.30/11/2011 18:41

If people stopped letting their dogs poo everywhere. And if the roads were safer. Oh! More variety in local shops would also be lush, maybe a wholefood/ethnic grocery. Shirley.30/11/2011 17:50

Moderate-to-serious Criminals should be hung, drawn & quartered on the village green every Saturday afternoon, after a good stoning by the locals.30/11/2011 16:22

Woodford green, its pretty nice, maybe a closer pub that was nice for peopel my age. (25)30/11/2011 16:06

Better bars :), Vista, California, USA (not sure this helps you...)30/11/2011 14:38

Community building activites30/11/2011 14:18

Jersey St.Martin an outdoor gym, and bike parking in more public spaces.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was just a quick and dirty feedback, from people I knew on Facebook. They did not know I was to use this information in a project, which probably led openly to answers like ‘badgers’ and smoking. Only asking the question ‘What makes you happy?’ led to discussions within the group. Some answers correlated with others, concerning the outdoors/nature, and friends/relationships.

Research: Facebook

Page 11: Define Phase - Jenny Schneider

• “Summer: Warm, Work outside, Longer days, BBQ’s, Beautiful colours in nature, (-insects)”

• “Winter: Xmas - family, party, celebrate, time off work, (-expensive), snow can be a +/-”

• “Spring/Autumn: Beautiful Colours, Changing Seasons”

• “Any time of year: Wildlife, Communal food/dinner (fun & engaging), Free Walks, Races, Wimbledon Tennis, Theatre - Atmosphere.”

“What is your favourite time of year, and why?”

Me and my older friends (29-65yrs) meet every week, at our regular curry restaurant. I felt this would be an ideal situation to ask an open question about weather, and analyse their responses; as they would be relaxed and happy.

Asking a question specific to weather, would make people think about their favourite activities more in-depth e.g. BBQing
