Defining the audience

About Pop musicPop music has evolved from rock and roll from the mid 1950s and has continually changed as time goes on. The basic structure of pop music includes a song usually

consisting of a verse and a repeated chorus. Most of the songs are between two and a half minutes and five and a half minutes in length. However there have been

exceptions in the past when a song has been abnormally long, in this case an edited version is released for radio airplay. Pop music borrows elements and ideas from a

wide range of music styles, some genres that have influenced and have been incorporated into pop music over the past 5 decades include R&B, rock, country, disco,

punk and hip hop. As a result pop music appeals to a mass audience and has been identified as the music that is accessible to the widest audience, meaning that pop

music draws the largest concert audiences, sells the most copies and is most frequently played on the radio.

AgePop music in general appeals to a wide audience therefore anyone from any

age group could be interested in a pop song. However pop music is aimed for people under 25 and it also depends on the singer as its thought that an adult

pop singer’s audience is usually between 12-25 whereas a teenage pop singers target audience is more likely to be people aged between 8-16.

However Rita Ora’s target audience for ‘Shine Ya Light’ is likely to be people aged between 8-25 as she is young and trendy but she is still an adult. The

lyrics are also simplistic, repetitive and easy to learn which is great for younger audience members but the lyrics also hold meaning behind them which only older members of the audience could understand and pick out

from the lyrics.

GenderRita Ora’s song doesn’t make a direct reference to a specific event or

something either males or females would understand as a result anyone can associate the lyrics of the song with their own situations. However it could be argued that the song is aimed at females due to the singer being female and having this look and appearance of being a strong independent woman. Also teenage girls might look up to her as being a role model when regarding her appearance specifically her clothes as she always wears fashionable, trendy

outfits which would be considered desirable especially by the younger audience members. Males are usually only part of this target audience if they

can either relate with the lyrics or they find the artist/singer attractive. Therefore in our music video we need a female that has similar traits to Rita

Ora as she appeals to both genders making the popularity of the music/music video greater.

Pre-audienceFor Rita Ora’s music video, ‘Shine Ya Light’ a pre-audience was created due to Rita Ora singing other songs and being a celebrity as she is known for singing

and also making appearances in TV shows therefore she is likely to have a large fan base who will be a massive part of the audience. However when we create our music video we won’t have the opportunity to have a pre-audience as our actors won’t be famous or well-known therefore our narrative and the actual music video itself needs to good so that it appeals to a wide audience.
