Future Scenario
Update – August 3, 2014; SUNY NYS RIN
In just two years after the NY regional councils submitted their respective business plans, NY state has become the center of attention as the national model for higher education, business, and government partnerships.
The business plans submitted has created a hot-bed of activity in industries that include Bio-Tech, Bio-informatics/Engineering, Medical Imaging & Visualization, IT/Web Services, Cybersecurity, Nano Fabrication, Green Tech and more.
What as helped to spur the economic growth and activities were the higher education institutions within NY. Cooperations and collaborations among SUNY, CICU, and NYSERNET within regions helped to establish economic growth hubs where both established businesses and business startups alike had access to a wealth of higher education resources and facilities that included the following:
Access to SUNYCICU corporate partners for business advice and services where forums, capital pre-qualification, and assistance in marketing,
Financial planning, business plan development and support, and any training is provided
Facilities/space to share and/or connect to the 1GBs network
Access to a powerful supercomputer facilities for R&D (where applicable at anchor campus as established by regional councils)
Access to geographic information systems, and data mining technologies
Access to SUNY/CICU specific campus tech (Alfred for ceramics ; Albany for nano-tech, Cornell for Bio Tech etc.)
As a result, NY state established a number of interconnected Ecosystems that led to overall economic revitalization of the state.

• Each piece (constituent) of the Ecosystem needs to connect and communicate with all others constituents
• The Critical Success Factor is a high-speed, NYSERNET facilitated 1GBs network(s) among the regional stakeholders
SUNY/CICU Pieces(i.e. SUNY core
competencies – SUNY/CICU campuses as the 1GBs anchors)
1GB network(s) would in and of itself be a very small part as an economic development engine. However, it would be vitally important as a competitive factor that enables and promotes long term economic growth and benefit. Imagine how far the industrial age would have gotten without its respective infrastructure (roads, bridges, rail, sea & air ports) and the long term economic growth and benefit they enabled (plus ..roads/bridges, etc. are constantly being upgraded and is seen as an ongoing economic investment by local/state govt.). The same ongoing economic investment will be needed here as well

Critical Success Factor:
-A network of networks-the 1GBs networks proposed to be
built will enable other/larger ones
and most importantly be
on-going job
creation, R&D, and
training enablers
for a plethora of
industries (both
new and old).
