THE SCIENCE OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE

1958. James L. Waters founded Waters Associates in the basement of a town police station. His entrepreneurial spirit drove him to explore all of the possibilities that his “what if?” questions conjured up. Exploring the answers led him to build a core of connections — some who would become colleagues and others who would become customers — whose love of scientific exploration and discovery matched his own.

Today, Jim Waters’ restless spirit and demanding intelligence still guides the worldwide organization we have become. We are committed to our culture of science in service to humanity.

We are in daily pursuit of:

THE SCIENCE OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE.

PURPOSEFUL INNOVATION RESULTS IN MEANINGFUL IMPACT

In our company, leading-edge science takes its direction from where our customers point us.

Energized to meet a challenge, we often find the

solution takes us to unanticipated discoveries, one

following another like a trail that seems inevitable

in hindsight, but in reality was a product of our

scientific curiosity.

Listening to the outside world… to change the world from inside our customers’ labs. THAT’S HOW WE DEFINE IMPACT.

Page 7: Defining THE SCIENCE OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE · 2014-12-18 · Because packaging should never become part of food content, Waters technologies enable the characterization of polymers

5

We take seriously our responsibility to every organization that depends on accuracy and reliability from its labs.

And we are very conscious of the fact that for any

analytical technology in a working laboratory to be

truly useful, it should be easy to use.

COBALAMIN

Waters’ early LC instruments led to the first total synthesis of Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) — vital to the proper function of human nervous systems.

PEDIGREE

From the very beginning, Waters attracted blue-chip customers, including Dow Chemical, B.F. Goodrich, and Mobil.

Our business is all about What’s Possible.

Not too long ago, we could not safely assume that

our drinking water was reliably safe… or that our

medicines had the necessary quality controls…

or that our food supplies were uncontaminated.

Today, all of those critical aspects of life are not

only possible, but in many parts of the globe they

are expected. A natural part of daily life. And

every year, these improvements are brought to

more countries, more communities, and more

individuals as these possibilities become realities

for more parts of the world.

That’s Waters at work.

SCIENCE IN THE SERVICE OF IMPROVING LIVES

MELAMINE

When hundreds of thousands of infants in China became seriously ill, Waters instruments identified this additive as the cause. Its use was banned.

LIPITOR®

One of the most successful medicines ever introduced, it was developed using Waters instrumentation and chemistries.

GAMBIA

Waters’ gift of the first mass spectrometer in West Africa enabled early detection and treatment of people with hepatitis B infection in the region.

7

Our business is all about The Science.

What we do only matters when it impacts the

world. Waters served as the driving force behind

the creation of International Food Safety Training

Laboratories (IFSTL), a groundbreaking network

of public-private partnerships that apply govern-

ment, university, and private industry expertise and

resources to the global food safety challenge. Every

day, we focus our science on improving lives.
