Definitions on Copyright, Intellectual Property and Citation for Elementary Students

This means that you legally own an object, idea, movie or sound, for example a program, music, sculpture, or a photograph.

1. Copyright

This means that anything that you create yourself like music, videos, and photography belongs to you.

2. Intellectual Property

This means that a payment is given to the owner for the use of his or her property, copyrighted works, or natural resources.

3. Royalty

This means that anything found in this domain is for everyone to use and not subject to copyright.

4. Public Domain

This means that when someone hands in work that is not theirs but claims it is. It can also mean that someone did not cite sources properly, meaning credit was not given for a resource that you used information from.

5. Plagiarism

This means that if you have a patent for something no one else can use your idea or work unless they get permission from you but you can do whatever you want with it.

6. Patent

This is a specific sign or indicator that is used by an individual or a business organization so that customers can easily recognize the type of business or where something comes from.
