!

The phrase ‘يتكلمون’ appears only in Surah Naba in the Qur’an. Let us look at the word ’تكلم‘ in the Qur’an.

! Those who associate partners with Allah مبحانه وتعالى, did Allah سبحانه وتعالى give them any authority that speaks of their kufr? They don’t have any authority. The disbelief is from their own selves.

! On Day of Judgement nobody will speak except by the permission of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. This is just as it is mentioned in Surah An Naba.

! Here Allah سبحانه وتعالى speaks to the people of Hellfire after they ask Him to take them out of Hellfire; they ask for another chance. Allah سبحانه وتعالى is the Most Merciful and this is how He speaks to the people of Hellfire- this is real humiliation. May Allah سبحانه تعالى protect us. Ameen. In life, don’t deceive yourself by only thinking Allah سبحانه وتعالى is the Most Merciful, He will forgive me, we need to also remember that His punishment is severe. This is how to be balanced.

نبئ عبادي أني أنا الغفور الرحيم (٤٩) وأن عذابي هو العذاب األليم(٥٠)Declare (O Muhammad SAW) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful. And that My Torment is indeed the most painful torment. (Surah Al Hijr 15:49,50)

Ayah 38-ن وقال صوابا يوم يقوم الروح واملالئكة صفا ال يتكلمون إال من أذن له الرحم

Definitions (املفردات)

تكلم verb is تكلمون نطق به وتحدث به speak and talk to

The word تكلم in the Qur’an

أم أنزلنا عليهم سلطانا فهو يتكلم بما كانوا به يشركونOr have We revealed to them a Scripture, which speaks of that which they have been associating with

Him? (Surah Ar Rum 30:35)

يوم يأت ال تكلم نفس إال بإذنه فمنهم شقي وسعيدOn the Day when it comes, no person shall speak except by His (Allah's) Leave. Some among them will

be wretched and (others) blessed. (Surah Hud 11:105)

قال اخسئوا فيها وال تكلمونHe (Allah) will say: "Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”

(Surah Al Mu’minoon 23:108)

! Both these ayat are about the sign Allah سبحانه وتعالى gave Zakariya عليه السالم. He could not speak to people for 3 days- though he can remember Allah سبحانه وتعالى. This is so amazing, even our tongue we don’t own

! This is about when Isa عليه السالم spoke when he was a baby. Notice, both in life and in the Herrafter nobody can speak except by permission of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

! This is about animals speaking on the day of judgement. Its amazing how we don't even own our speech though we may think that we are speaking by ourselves.

In Surah An Naba, Allah سبحانه وتعالى tells us it is by the His permission that everybody will speak.

بك كثيرا وسبح بالعشي قال رب اجعل لي آية قال آيتك أال تكلم الناس ثالثة أيام إال رمزا واذكر ربكار واإل

He said: "O my Lord! Make a sign for me." Allah said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals. And remember your Lord much (by praising Him again and again),

and glorify (Him) in the afternoon and in the morning.” (Surah Ale Imran 3:41)

قال رب اجعل لي آية قال آيتك أال تكلم الناس ثالث ليال سويا[Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not

speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." (Surah Maryam 19:10)

إذ قال اهلل يا عيسى ابن مريم اذكر نعمتي عليك وعلى والدتك إذ أيدتك بروح القدس تكلم الناس في املهد وكهال وإذ علمتك الكتاب والحكمة والتوراة واإلنجيل وإذ تخلق من الطني كهيئة الطير

إذ بإذني فتنفخ فيها فتكون طيرا بإذني وتبرئ األكمه واألبرص بإذني وإذ تخرج املوتى بإذني وذا إال سحر مبني كففت بني إسرائيل عنك إذ جئتهم بالبينات فقال الذين كفروا منهم إن ه

(Remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection). "O 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Remember My Favour to you and to your mother when I supported you with Ruh-ul-Qudus

[Jibrael (Gabriel)] so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you writing, Al-Hikmah (the power of understanding), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel); and when you made out of the clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My Permission, and you breathed

into it, and it became a bird by My Permission, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My Permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) since you came unto them with clear

proofs, and the disbelievers among them said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.' “ (Surah Al Maeda 5:110)

وإذا وقع القول عليهم أخرجنا لهم دابة من األرض تكلمهم أن الناس كانوا بآياتنا ال يوقنونAnd when the Word (of torment) is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth a beast to them, which will speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our Ayat (Verses of the

Quran and Prophet Muhammad SAW). (Surah An Naml 27:82)

The word أذن in the Qur’an

! Only those who Allah سبحانه وتعالى gave permission can intercede on the day of judgement. This is a mercy from Allah.

! This ayah also tells us that intercession on the day of judgement is only by the permission of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

! This ayah is about the Prophet صلى اهلل عليه وسلم giving permission.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى will not give everybody permission to speak; only to those who speak good. The word صوابا means correct, striking target, perfect words. Only those who speak like this will be given permission to speak. For example, in a court only the judge and those who he gives permission can speak. Also, only those who speak sense are given permission. Imagine , on day of judgement only those who speak صوابا are given permission. Now in duniya all speech are mixed- truth and false, sense and nonsense. We can only seek the guidance. On day of judgement nobody can speak without permission. In Paradise, only pure speech, free of vain talk.

That’s why, the believer in duniya, lives like the state in paradise because of his good speech. The one who speaks good spreads good and those who speak bad, spread bad. It is better to speak good or be silent. Actually our speech can also be out of desire. That’s why we need to strain even our words. if there is nothing good to say, just be silent.

HOMEWORK: Write the tafsir of this ayah in arabic (Tafsir As-Saadi, Tafisr Ibn Kathir and Cream of the tafsir [زبدة التفسير])

ن ورضي له قوال فاعة إال من أذن له الرحم يومئذ ال تنفع الشOn that day no intercession shall avail, except the one for whom the Most Beneficent (Allah) has given

permission and whose word is acceptable to Him. (Surah Taha 20:109)

فاعة عنده إال ملن أذن له حتى إذا فزع عن قلوبهم قالوا ماذا قال ربكم قالوا الحق وهو وال تنفع الش العلي الكبير

Intercession with Him profits not, except for him whom He permits. Until when fear is banished from their (angels') hearts, they (angels) say: "What is it that your Lord has said?" They say: "The truth. And

He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Surah Saba 34:23)

لك الذين صدقوا وتعلم الكاذبني عفا اهلل عنك لم أذنت لهم حتى يتبنيMay Allah forgive you (O Muhammad SAW). Why did you grant them leave (for remaining behind, you should have persisted as regards your order to them to proceed on Jihad), until those who told the truth

were seen by you in a clear light, and you had known the liars? (Surah At Tawbah 9:43)
