1. ForewordIn recent years the demand for professionals with more transversal skills and technicalcompetencies has become very evident. These features cannot be offered by a singleconventionalmasterdegreeprogramme.Starting from the year 2011 the idea of joint programmeswas introduced at Politecnico diMilanoandnewroadmaps for jointDoubleDegrees(DD)havebeen established inorder tocombinecomplementaryskillsandtoculturallywidenthecurrentdegreeprogrammes. The general objective of this approach is to fully exploit synergies and complementaritiesamongdifferentmasterdegreestudyplans,tomakeeducationaloffermoreflexibleandbettermatchingthedynamicsoftheindustrialworld.2. OverviewontheinternalDoubleDegreeinBIOMEDICALandMECHANICALENGINEERING

The internal Double Degree in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering (iDD‐BME) aims atcapturing the emerging needs of the Italian and European biomedical industries, which arestrategicandrelevantinthebiomechanicalfield.Inparticular, such sector, inorder to competewithin internationalmarkets, is looking foranewprofessional figureable to integrate the typical skillsof abiomedicalengineerwith thekeytechnicalcompetenciesofamechanicalengineer.Such objective could be achieved by the cultural closeness of the two programmes, whichpresent several commonalities, although showing specific differences that can, nonetheless, beeasilycompensatedthroughajointprogramme.ThefocusofBiomedicalEngineeringProgrammeisprovidingstudentswith asolid backgroundinengineeringmethodologiesand technologiesapplied tomedicalandbiological problems, with particular reference to the analytical description, simulation and analysis of systemsand signals of medical – biological interest, to the study of biomaterials, devices andinstrumentation for the diagnosis, therapy, substitution of organs and rehabilitation, to theknowledge of patientmanagement, support structures, IT systems and the relevant ethicalcriteria.InparticulartheMasterdegreeisorganizedin4tracks:

ClinicalEngineering, ElectronicTechnologies, BiomechanicsandBiomaterials, EngineeringforCells,TissuesandBiotechnologies.

Themissionof theMechanicalEngineeringProgramme is to trainprofessionalswith a solidfoundationalbase, agoodscientificmethodandbroadtechnicalandapplicativeknowledge.Amechanicalengineer, beinginvolvedinthedesign, optimizationandmanagementofproducts, systems and production processes, must reach a sound preparation in design and testingmethodologies, numerical simulation, manufacturing processes, automation and control, material properties and related selection criteria, fluid mechanics and transformation ofenergy in amachinery. ThetrackofBiomaterialsandBiomechanicsoftheBiomedicalcourse, presentsmanycommonmethodologicalandapplicativeaspectswiththeMechanicalEngineering programme.TheiDD‐BMEoffersauniqueopportunitytoexploitthemainbenefitsfrombothapproaches,thusfulfillingtheexistinggapsinthetwospecificprogrammes.The integration of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering programmes stems from suchneeds, thus aiming at developing a professional technician, with a solid industrial technicalbackground, well matched with a biomedical vision, thus being really appealing for thebiomedicalindustriesthatdevelopproductsinthefieldofbiomechanics.

3. LearningobjectivesThe study plan of theMaster degree inBiomedical andMechanical Engineering is aimed atproducinganadvancedprofessionalprofileforanexpertinbiomechanics. The Biomedical‐Mechanical Engineer coming from the DD programme here describedacquires during the three‐year course a combination of knowledge featuring a soundbackground on applied disciplines of engineering, together with wide scientific skills onbiomechanics in order to: ”knowhow to design complex systemsandmanage processes byexploitingatthehighestlevelmodernindustrialbiomechanics”.This new professional figure would be welcome by the industrial world with great favoursince in many technical fields, not only those concerned with research and innovation, biomechanical engineersarerequiredwith expertisecombiningmechanical engineeringandbiomedical science. Figures about employment in recent years, clearly show that in privateindustry both profiles are highly recognized and it can be reasonably supposed that aprofessional combiningbothprofilesacquired through theDDprogrammewouldbe soughtandappreciated.

4. ThestudyplanA total of 180 creditsover three yearsmust be gained to obtain theDD inBiomedical andMechanicalEngineering.Studentswillthereforeneedtoselectcoursesinexcesswithrespectto the standardMaster of Science programme(120 credits over two years). The applicantshavetoenrolintheM.Sc.inBiomedicalEngineeringorintheM.Sc.inMechanicalEngineering,andthenpresenta–formal–individualstudyprogrammecomprisingthecreditsthatwillbegainedinthethirdyear.Considering thecurrentstudyplansof theindividualmasterdegreecoursesand thespecificrequirementssetbytheDegreeClassesoftheItalianMinistryofEducation, itisexpectedthatthe students coming from one of the two individual study plans would develop amultidisciplinary graduation thesis covering topics that are typical of both the studyprogrammesattheendofthesecondyearandduringattendanceofthethirdyear.TheMaster

5. StructureofthestudyplanThestudyplanisdevelopedandspecificallycustomisedforBiomedicalEngineeringstudentswishing to expand their expertise in Mechanical Engineering (BIO‐MEC track) and forMechanicalEngineeringstudentswithspecific interestsinBiomedicalEngineering(MEC‐BIOtrack). The structure of the study plan is illustrated in detail in the following table. It consists of39/40 CFU of grounding courses (depending on the student’s Bachelor degree), which arefollowed by a common track consisting of courses taken both from BIO and MEC M.Scprogrammes.
