Introduction
This Yearbook accompanies the traditional end of year exhibition of students’ work which showcases the Bachelor of Architecture programme at Nottingham Trent University. It is an opportunity to recognise the intellectual enquiry, imagination and creative skills of the graduating cohort of 2015.
While the study of architecture within what is now NTU started in 1843, the current BArch course is still relatively young. This volume is an indication of the progress being made in examining topics such as ‘productive architecture’ which have academic as well as professional relevance and contribute to the wider debate on the future of the built environment. This year’s exhibition ‘Lavoro Milano’ (Work Milan) reimagines a former industrial district in Milan positing regenerative architectural interventions ranging from big data to vertical farming and 3D printing.
At NTU, design and the design studio are central to the course ethos which is based on an understanding of architecture in a world increasingly defined by globalization, the transformative impact of technology on cities and culture and the need for innovative and sustainable development. It is pleasing to note that this year NTU graduates will gain year out experience with leading firms in the EU, Americas and Asia.
I would like to thank the academics, practitioners, technicians and administrators who have tutored and supported students in the design studio, workshops and throughout the academic year. Similarly I would like to acknowledge the contribution of colleagues from the Departments of Architecture and Planning at the Polytechnic of Milan during our explorative field trip to the city.
The School as a whole has been enriched by the creative endeavour and commitment shown by students in producing the work contained within this volume.

Course Overview
The end of the year Architecture Yearbook represents more than just an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the BArch (Part I) graduates. It is also a forum to recognise the efforts of academics, practitioners, technicians and administrators who assist in the production of the architectural work. From a graduate perspective, it is indeed the climax of a long process of investigation, learning, reflection, discovery and creation revolving around architecture and its many allied disciplines.
The emergence of the BArch’s ethos and identity has occurred after a systematic process of consolidation anchored in creative design studio work. The course has achieved a clear sense of identity, maintaining design at its core, with a focus on fostering an ethical and responsible creative vision; this vision acknowledges the role of evolving technologies whilst being informed by an understanding of the local and global conditions that shape architecture today. In a world defined by globalization, the ethos is based on an understanding of architecture, from a local to a global level, firmly grounded in site and context and engendering relationships between communities. Architecture understood not as a purely visual object, but as a cultural artefact negotiating a world defined by threats to traditional culture, ecological challenges and the dominance of instrumental rationalism in modern life.
The work exhibited in this Yearbook demonstrates a wide range of architectural themes and proposals, some of them based on a strong conceptual thesis; others matured from the visions and desires of communities; and others more, grounded in the pragmatic fabric of reality. The projects encourage students to explore and understand their own creative process, embracing and learning form their triumphs, internal struggles and anxieties. Design work emphasises the need to articulate their own position and develop a set of intellectual core values that would give gravitas to their work.

Year 3 studio project:
The Productive Power of Architecture
It is clear that our existence takes place in an age of globalisation. We have become accustomed to perform our daily activities within an existential frame of high interconnectivity and advance technological features; in some instances these features benefit us, however on other occasions we are victims of the effects of globalisation. Irrespective of its positive or negative impact, we constantly witness the current movements and synergies that transform communities, cities, countries, regions and the world. Globalisation has brought with it an unprecedented level of creativity and wealth, though accompanied by new wastefulness, inequality and ecological destruction.
For countries across the world, one of the key factors of economic life was the manufacturing and production of goods. However there has been a shift since the 1960s entailing a “move from the centrality of the factories, heavy machinery, and blue-collar labour to the primacy of information, new technologies, knowledge and service work” (el-Ojeili & Hayden 2006:p.29). The 19th century industrial society gave way to the post-industrial society in the 20th century. This shift had deep impact on numerous countries, as factories closed down producing an extensively abandoned productive landscape and deep shift in economic wealth.
Therefore the cities of the 21st century will need to invest in new ways to reinvigorate the industrial landscapes that shape their peripheral areas. It is through architecture and urban design that we can produce a new future for our cities. This project challenged students to think about the Productive Power of Architecture in the transformation of the city, and its peripheral areas, by exploring four different architectural programmes:
• Faculty Building/Research Centre;• Cultural Factory;• Vertical Farming;• Data Centre.
All of the architectural intervention were sited in the outskirts areas of Lambrate and Forlanini in Milan.
