COURSES TAUGHT

Recent UIUC Courses ART 199, Art 299 - Art, Community, and Global Civil Society: The purpose of Art, Community, and Global Civil Society is to promote thoughtful inquiry about the nature of and manner in which art, cultural, and visual/aesthetic expressions convey and influence community life in the U.S., to consider how communities are impacted by globalizing tendencies, and to examine the goals and activities of local and global civil society within real and virtual communities. Conducted as an active-learning inquiry seminar, Art, Community, and Global Civil Society also functions as a technology-based, research intensive, creative lab. Course content is pursued through class small-group inquiry activities, class discussions of selected readings, studio explorations, independent student research projects, and student formal and informal presentations. Art 199 culminates in a student collaboratively designed technology-dependent research project on topics of students’ choosing and that emanates from course presentations, readings, discussions, and earlier research projects. Art 299 student research projects incorporate a month-long collaborative service-learning component in local arts-based community sites.

ARTS 299, ARTE 501 - Museums in Action: Engaging the Community: Taught both fall and spring semesters as a service learning course, and offered to both undergraduate and graduate students across the campus Museums in Action considers how contemporary research in museum interpretation and educational program development translate into meaningful practices. Students critically examine museum scholarly discourse and practices; how Krannert Art Museum engages culturally diverse audiences, and lead in the development and implementation of innovative approaches to museum tours and events. New educational outreach programming developed by students also explores how new media technologies can be incorporated into museum educational practices.

ARTE 302 - Organization of Public School Art Programs: The purpose of ARTE 302, our capstone undergraduate art education course, is to facilitate integration of knowledge and competencies articulated by the National Art Education Association, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the UIUC Council on Teacher Education into a framework for teaching art in a culturally diverse society; with particular interest in secondary educational contexts. Building on their professional experiences and artistic interests, students conduct research on contemporary youth, develop long term curriculum plans, lesson plans, and teaching resources for real-world teaching. Students also engage in a self-study of their own artistic/aesthetic development, develop a professional resume, and begin

Page 17: Delacruz Cv 2014

Elizabeth Delacruz 17

to make preparations for their student teaching internships.

ARTE 402 - Artistic Development: Artistic Development, considers historical and contemporary perspectives on artistic development, emphasizing relationships between young people’s intellectual, aesthetic, artistic, moral, emotional, and cultural development and teachers' curriculum / instructional deliberations and approaches. Taught once a year and open to graduate and upper level undergraduate students, ARTE 402 facilitates a community of scholarly inquiry that facilitates student leadership, independent readings and research, and scholarly writing and presentation.

ARTE 501- Research and Writing for Publication: Taught for the first time in Fall 2008, and adapting editorial procedures utilized in publication of the journal Visual Arts Research, this course provides opportunities for students to examine contemporary research strategies and writing processes central to visual arts and aesthetic education, to define and develop their own research interests, to identify potential audiences for their research, and to participate in a community of scholarly inquiry through discussions, formal presentations, research, writing, and peer review. This course is appropriate for any student wishing to find out more about research traditions common to art/aesthetic education academic discourse, who desires to be part of an inquiry group, and who wish to refine their individual research projects, writing for publication, and formal presentation skills.
