HORNETS NINTH IN MEAC PRESEASON POLL

The Delaware State men’s basketball team has a long way to go to prove Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference pollsters wrong. The Hornets have been picked to finish 12th in the 2016-17 MEAC regular season race, according to a poll of league head coaches and sports information repre-sentatives. Howard is the choice of pollsters to capture the 2016-17 MEAC crown. The Bison, led by league preseason Player-of-the-Year James Daniel, garnered 14 of 25 first place votes and 299 total points. South Carolina State is a close second, collecting nine first place votes and 292 points. Despite winning the last two MEAC Tournament championships, Hampton is picked to finish third this season, garnering two first place votes and 250 points. Delaware State collected 104 points, ahead of only Florida A&M at the bottom with 50. DSU sophomore guard Devin Morgan has been named to the 2016-17 preseason All-MEAC Second Team, while senior guard DeAndre Haywood is a third team pick.

Morgan (left), the 2015-16 MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year, MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year, was tops on the Hornets and 23rd in the MEAC in scoring at 12.2 points per game last season. He ranked 11th in the league in assists (2.7 pg), 10th in free throw percentage (.792), 14th in three-point percentage (.356) and ninth in three-pointers per game (2.3) during the 2015-16 season. Morgan, a five-time MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week selec-tion, reached the “Final 4” in balloting for College Court Reports Mid-Major Freshman-of-the-Year last season. Haywood (right) was second on the Hornets in scor-

ing (11.5 ppg), tops in steals and second in assists as a junior during the 2015-16 season. He was ninth in the MEAC in steals a year ago.

Walker served as head coach at Division II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. He posted a 91-102 overall record at Shaw, including a 21-9 mark and the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth during the 1994-95 season. He led the team to a 17-9 mark in the 1997-98 campaign. The Bears finished in the Top 10 of the Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College poll during two of Walker's seasons. In 1998, he coached a team of U.S. collegiate players to a bronze medal at a tournament in Russia. From 1987 to '93, Walker was an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. IUP was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II poll during parts of three seasons while Walker was on the staff. Before entering the coaching ranks, he enjoyed a playing career that in-cluded a brief stint with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers during the 1985-86 season. Prior to reaching the NBA, Walker played a total of seven years with various European and U.S. professional basketball leagues. As a collegiate player at Clemson University, he helped lead the Tigers to a 23-9 overall record and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 1979-80 season. Walker earned a 1981 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Clemson in 1981; and a master’s degree in Student Personnel Services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1991. Keith and wife Kim have three children, Dockery, Zachary and Sawyer. Dockery was a four-year basketball letterwinner at Brown University.

HEAD COACH KEITH WALKER

Keith Walker was officially introduced as head coach of the Hornets on Apr. 15, 2014. He served as DSU's interim head coach for 11 games after being appointed to the position on Jan. 30, 2014. In his first full season as head coach of the Hornets during the 2014-15 campaign, he led the team to its first MEAC championship game and post-season appearance since 2007. The Hornets defeated Savannah State, How-

ard and top seed North Carolina Central to advance to the 2015 MEAC title game. NC Central was undefeated during the 2014-15 MEAC regular season. Delaware State was invited to compete in the 2015 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) and serve as host of a first round game, marking the first post-season home game in team history. Among the other highlights of Walker’s first full season as head coach of the Hornets was 72-65 win at Wake Forest, Delaware State’s first-ever victory against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The Hornets also posted impressive road wins at Penn in the historic Palestra (77-75) and Delaware (66-53) during the 2014-15 season. Walker is also credited with aiding the development of center Kendall Gray, who became the second player in league history to earn MEAC Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year in the same season (2014-15). Last season, Gray also became the first player in recorded NCAA Div. I history to reach 30 points (33) and grab 30 rebounds in a game (Mar. 5, 2015 vs. Coppin State). Also during the 2014-15 season, Amere May became the first Delaware State player to lead the MEAC in scoring in more than 20 years. Walker first joined the Delaware State staff as an assistant coach in July 2000. During his stint as the interim coach, Walker led the Hornets to a 5-6 overall record and 5-5 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Prior to the appointment, the team was 4-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Delaware State posted a season-high three-game win streak, highlighted by a victory over MEAC Tournament runner-up Morgan State, during Walker’s stint as interim head coach. During the 2013-14 season, Hornet junior center Kendall Gray set a team record with 81 blocks. Gray was named to the 2014 All-MEAC Second Team. Gray held the previous team record with 75 blocks as a sophomore the previous year. The Hornets recorded 185 blocks during the 2012-13 cam-paign, the second-best single-season mark in team history. During the 2011-12 season, Walker’s work with the Hornet big men was instrumental in the team's school-record 192 blocks, shattering the record previously held by the 1989-90 squad. Delaware State was tops in the MEAC and fifth among all NCAA Division I teams at 6.6 blocks per game during the 2011-12 campaign. In addition, DSU power forward Marques Oliver moved into first place on the team's list for career blocks that sea-son. Oliver finished his career with 222 blocks. Walker helped lead the Hornets to three consecutive MEAC regular sea-son titles from 2004 to '07, during which the Hornets posted a league rec-ord of 46-8 (.850). The Hornets appeared in three consecutive MEAC Tournament championship games, capturing the title and accompanying NCAA Tournament berth in 2005. The following year, Delaware State defeated Northern Arizona on the road in the National Invitation Tourna-ment for the team's only national post-season win. The Hornets also ap-peared in the 2007 National Invitation Tournament.

MAN ON FIRE

Despite going four -for-11 on three-point attempts in the last three games, Delaware State junior Kavon Waller remains atop the MEAC and No. 5 among all NCAA men’s Division I basketball players in three-point accuracy this season. Waller is shooting 53.7% from three-point range this season, knocking down 36 of his 67 attempts. Waller was eight-for-nine on three-point attempts (.889) in the Hornets’ 92-69 win over Keystone on Dec. 10. The eight threes tied a school record first set by Marty Bailey in a 2000 MEAC Tournament game. In addition to topping all MEAC players in three-point percentage, Waller is tied for sixth in the league in total threes (36) and three-pointers per game (2.6). His overall shooting percentage of .505 (52-for-103) is seventh in the MEAC this season. As a team, Delaware State is No. 2 in the MEAC with a .371 three-point shooting percentage (111-for-299). A year ago, Waller averaged 5.7 points per game on 54-of-123 shooting from the field (.439), including 26-of-62 shooting (.419) from three-point territory. He has reached double figures in scoring in seven of the Hornets’ 10 games this season.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR

The 2016-17 Hornets again have a distinct international flavor. For the second year in a row DSU’s roster includes three players born outside the United States. Center Demola Onifade (fr.), born in Lagos, Nigeria, joined the team last season. Onifade came to America at age 16, and attended Camden Catholic HS in N.J. Mrdjan Gasevic, born in Serbia is in his fourth season with the Hornets. Gasevic resided in Texas before joining the Hornets prior to the 2013-14 season. Russia-born Artem Tavakalyan is in second year at Delaware State. He joined the Hornets before the 2015-16 season after attending the Florida Air Academy.

STINGERS

Waller (F), Mallory (F), Onifade (C ), Haywood (G) and Morgan (G) have started each game for the Hornets this season … DSU is tops in the MEAC in three-point shooting (.382), second in three-pointers per game (8.3) and second in the league in overall field goal percentage (.435) … the Hornets are tied for second in the MEAC in assists at 14.0 per game
