36SI Heavy Duty Alternator Specifications

The 36SI is available in three different mount-ing configurations: a J180 hinge mount, a J180quad mount and a pad mount. The imagesabove provide the critical dimensions for eachmounting style. The photos below will aid incore identification.

Brushless Design for Long LifeSince brushes are the most vulnerable point ofwear on the typical alternator, youd think thatall alternators would be brushless. But the elec-tronics of brushless alternators are more com-plicated, making them more expensive tomanufacture. Thats why most alternators stilluse brushes.The Delco Remy 36SI alternator, on the other

hand, is a pure brushless design. With fewermoving parts, fewer wear parts, it lasts longer.That means we are able to give it unbeatablewarranty coverage. For OE and new service ap-plications, the 36SI HP series part numbers ref-erenced in this brochure are covered by a 3year/350,000 mile warranty. Reman units arecovered by a 2 year/250,000 mile warranty.

High Efficiency By DesignBecause of the extremely efficient design ofthe 36SI, less engine horsepower is needed to

run the unit. So more horsepower is availableto run the truck. That translates directly intofuel savings.The savings are significant.Based on some conservative parameters* a

truck equipped with a 36SI will save $80 overan identical truck using a Denso 130A for

every 100,000 miles driven. Thats calculatedfor a 60 Amp load. As the load increases, thesavings get even better. For an 80 Amp load,the savings reach and impressive $125 forevery 100,000 miles driven. Multiply thattimes the trucks in your fleet and the miles youdrive every year and the choice becomes clear.

Remote Sense for IntelligentBattery ManagementDue to resistance in battery cables, environ-mental factors and other conditions, the volt-age from the alternator drops by the time itreaches the battery. Just because the alternator

is sending 14 volts doesnt mean that the bat-teries are receiving 14 volts. Thats why weveincluded Remote Sense on most models.With Remote Sense, a second wire reads the

actual voltage at the battery thats comingfrom the alternator. It signals the alternator toboost its output to compensate for voltage dropensuring 14 volts at the battery. Research hasshown that an increase of just 1/2 volt, whenneeded, can cut the battery charge time in half.At the end of the day, it can make the differ-ence between batteries that are fully chargedand those that arent.

There are a number of different ways to com-pare alternators. But the most important onemight just be operating efficiency. Thats be-cause it takes horsepower to turn an alternator,horsepower thats generated by fuel. When ittakes less horsepower to turn the alternator,more horsepower is left to turn the drive train... and that translates directly into better fuelmileage. So how much fuel can an efficient al-ternator save?We were afraid youd never ask.

Adding Up The SavingsTo calculate how much you can save with thenew Delco Remy 36SI, its necessary to make acouple of assumptions. The following scenariois realistic for many fleets.Based on a fuel cost of $3.00/gallon, 40% en-

gine efficiency, 14V, 75C inlet air temperatureand 38 MPH overall average speed, the cost ofdriving 100,000 miles in a truck running with a60 amp load and a Delco Remy 36SI alternatorwould be $80 less than the same truck using aDenso 130A alternator. If the load were in-creased to 80 amps, the difference would beeven more dramatic: $125 for every 100,000miles driven.
