The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences promotes research, scholarship and teaching in the humanities and social sciences and a better understanding

of the importance of such work for Canada and the world. It works for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences and, as a federation of learned societies, it provides infrastructure for the Canadian scholarly community.

The Federation believes that research and education in social and cultural issues contribute both to the solution of social problems and to the quality of life in Canada. The Federation supports equity in Canadian universities, and it holds the conviction that knowledge, freedom, and democracy cannot thrive without one another.

Welcome to Congress 2008On behalf of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the University of British Columbia, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 77th Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. This year’s theme, Thinking Beyond Borders: Global Ideas — Global Values is a wonderful opportunity to explore what it means to be global citizens.

It’s particularly exciting that Congress is being held during UBC’s centennial year. We hope you will find time to experience some of the university’s attractions, including the newly-expanded Museum of Anthropology, the Belkin Gallery, the stunning view from the Rose Garden, and Sustainability Street, an example of what makes UBC a leader in sustainability. Hosting Congress 2008 is a fitting recognition of UBC’s centennial and a reflection of our motto, “It’s only the beginning.”

Margaret Somerville « A Bird on an Ethics Wire »L’éthicienne renommée Margaret Somerville est la directrice fondatrice du Centre de médecine, éthique et droit à l’Université McGill où elle occupe la chaire Samuel-Gale à la Faculté de droit et est professeure à la Faculté de médecine. Au cours des conférences CBC Massey en 2006, Somerville s’est attaquée à certaines des questions les plus litigieuses de notre époque et a proposé un brillant nouveau type de langage et de réflexion déontolo-giques pour nous aider à nous y retrouver. À titre de consultante auprès de nombreux organismes gouvernementaux et non gouvernementaux, elle a travaillé pour l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, le Haut Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l’homme et l’UNESCO. Elle a reçu un certain nombre de doctorats honorifiques en droit et est récipiendaire d’un grand nombre de prix, notamment l’Ordre d’Australie.

Cette causerie sera suivie d’un groupe d’experts scientifiques organisé par la Société canadienne des philosophes chrétiens et chrétiennes (SCPC).

Richard Florida « Who’s Your City? »Richard Florida est l’un des intellectuels de la scène publique les plus en vue dans le monde qui s’intéresse à la compétitivité économique, aux tendances démographiques, ainsi qu’à l’innovation culturelle et

technologique. Florida est professeur de commerce et de créativité à la Rotman School of Management, de l’Université de Toronto. Antérieurement, Florida a occupé des postes de professeur à la George Mason University et à la Carnegie Mellon University et a enseigné en tant que professeur invité à Harvard et au MIT. Il a déjà été premier scientifique pour la Gallup Organization. Florida fournit une perspective unique axée sur les données des facteurs sociaux, économiques et démographiques qui pilotent l’économie mondiale du 21e siècle.

Research in Society LecturesThe annual Research in Society lectures are the intellectual centrepiece of the Congress. Designed to be of interest to a large number of the represented disciplines and open to the public, they feature internationally renowned and distinguished academics and intellectuals who can comment with authority on current issues or matters of global concern. Followed on occasion by an interdisciplinary panel that is organized in close collaboration with participating associations, the Research in Society lectures are the Federation’s showcase events.

Margaret Somerville “A Bird on an Ethics Wire”Renowned ethicist Margaret Somerville is the founding director of the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill Univer-sity, where she holds the Samuel Gale Chair in the Faculty of Law and is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine. In the 2006 CBC Massey Lectures Somerville tackled some of the most contentious issues of our times, and pro-posed a brilliant new kind of ethical language and thought to help us navigate them. As a consultant to numerous govern-ment and non-governmental bodies, she has worked with the World Health Organization, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNESCO. She has received a number of honorary doctorates in law and is the recipient of many awards, including the Order of Australia.

This lecture will be followed by a scholarly panel organized by the Canadian Society of Christian Philosophers (CSCP).

Richard Florida “Who’s Your City?”Richard Florida is one of the world’s leading public intellectuals on economic competitiveness, demographic trends, and cultural and technological innovation. Currently Professor of Business and Creativity at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Florida has held professorships at George Mason University and Carnegie Mellon University and taught as a visiting professor at Harvard and MIT. He is a former senior scientist with the Gallup Organization. Florida earned his Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers College and his Ph.D. from Columbia University. Through his work, he provides unique, data-driven insight into the social, economic and demographic factors that drive the 21st-century world economy.

He has recently written a biography of Wilfrid Laurier for Penguin Group Canada’s Extraordinary Canadians series. This Breakfast on Campus will take place in French, with a bilingual question and answer period to follow.

David Chariandy “Cultural Memory and Forgetting: A Reading from Soucouyant”David Chariandy teaches English literature at Simon Fraser University, and is one of the founding editors of Commodore Books, the first black Canadian literary publisher in western Canada. His debut novel Soucouyant was long-listed for the 2007 Giller Prize, and shortlisted

for the 2007 Governor General’s award for fiction. Soucouyant explores memory and generation gaps in a family balancing between a Caribbean past and a Canadian present.

Stevie Cameron « The Pickton File and the Missing Women of Downtown Vancouver’s Eastside »Considérée par plusieurs comme la meilleure journaliste d’enquête au pays, Stevie Cameron réfléchissait à la situation des femmes du Downtown Eastside de Vancouver qui manquent à l’appel depuis 1998, lorsqu’un article occasionnel est paru dans le journal au sujet des familles et amis de quelque 63 femmes manquantes revendiquant des mesures concrètes — sans succès auprès des policiers et politiciens. Son livre, The Pickton File, est écrit non seulement avec une curiosité d’enquête infatigable, mais également avec une remarquable compassion pour les femmes qui nous ont quittés et celles qui luttent toujours pour leur survie dans le Downtown Eastside. Stevie Cameron, diplômée de l’UBC, est une auteure qui a été récompensée à multiples reprises pour ses quatre ouvrages jugés meilleurs vendeurs.

Richard W. Pound « Big Ideas in a Small World »Richard W. Pound, OC, Oq, qC, LLD, est un ancien médaillé olympique, un avocat et un personnage international de renom. Il est le 17e chancelier de l’Université McGill. Depuis qu’il s’est joint au Comité olympique international (COI) en 1978, Pound a siégé à titre de membre du Conseil exécutif et de vice-président; son enquête du scandale de Salt Lake City a mené à la création d’un

nouvel organe déontologique chargé de surveiller les futures interactions entre les villes soumissionnaires et les membres du COI. Il est également président sortant de l’Agence mondiale antidopage. M. Pound a été nommé au Comité de liaison entre la magistrature de la Cour fédérale et le Barreau et a donné des causeries sur les questions d’imposition à McGill. Il a également publié plusieurs ouvrages : son plus récent, Unlucky to the End: The Story of Janise Marie Gamble (Presses universitaires McGill-queen’s, 2007), est un compte rendu fulgurant d’un rapport abusif et son résultat tragique — un véritable récit criminalistique d’une erreur judiciaire fondamentale du Canada.

Stevie Cameron “The Pickton File and the Missing Women of Downtown Vancouver’s Eastside”

A woman who is considered by many to be this country’s best investigative journalist, Stevie Cameron has been thinking about the missing women of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside since 1998, when the occasional newspaper story ran about families and friends of some of the 63 missing women agitating for action — and being ignored by police and politicians. Her book, The Pickton File, is written not only with tireless investigative curiosity, but also with enormous compassion for the women who are gone and the ones who still struggle on the Downtown Eastside.

Stevie Cameron is a graduate of UBC and is the multi-award-winning author of four bestselling books.

Richard W. Pound “Big Ideas in a Small World”Richard W. Pound, OC, Oq, qC, LLD, is a former Olympic medalist, a lawyer, and Chancellor of McGill University. Since he joined the International Olympic Committee in 1978, Pound has served on the Executive Board and as Vice-President; his investigation of the Salt Lake City scandal led to the creation of a new ethics watchdog to monitor future interaction between bidding cities and IOC members. he past Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency, Pound has been appointed to the Federal Court Bench, has lectured in taxation matters at McGill, and has published several books. His most recent, Unlucky to the End: The Story of Janise Marie Gamble (McGill-queen’s UP, 2007), is a searing account of an abusive relationship and its tragic result — a true-crime account of a Canadian miscarriage of justice.

Falguni A. Sheth “On the Lack of Diversity in the Academy, or What’s Theory Got to Do with It?”Falguni A. Sheth debates the commonly-held notion that scholars of colour aren’t interested in x or y fields of study, arguing that these disciplines may be unwittingly myopic in their considerations of a diverse range of political contexts, creating universalities through a neglect of either the historical and political context of a particu-lar phenomenon, or of the conceptual framework used to frame the discussion. In turn, these myopias have a direct influence on whether scholars from a range of ethnic, racial, and correspondingpolitical backgrounds are attracted to or repulsed by any given field. A philosopher and political theorist at Hampshire College, Amherst, Sheth writes and teaches in the areas of continental and political philosophy, philosophy of race, and legal and feminist theory.

FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting Present: The Dalton Camp AwardThe Dalton Camp Award was established by FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting in 2002 in honour of the memory of the late Dalton Camp and to encourage and recognize excellence in essay-writing on the link between democratic values and the quality of the media in Canada. Each year, up to two Canadians are selected for a prize consisting of a bronze-cast medal by Canadian sculptress Dora de Pedery-Hunt and $5,000 in cash.

n HRSDC-CFHSS Collaborative ProgramNow in its second year, the Federation’s Collaborative Program with Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) aims to continue to stimulate a discourse among scholars in areas relevant to public policy development on learning and post-secondary education.

n Metropolis Project “The Experiences of Second-Generation Canadian Youth”The experiences of second-generation Canadian youth are strong indicators of societal inclusion. Accordingly, this year the Metropolis Project has partnered with the Association for Canadian Studies and the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to produce a special edition of Canadian Issues/Thèmes canadiens focused on the experiences of second-generation youth.

Aboriginal Research and Policy: Understanding the Challenges of Métis, Non-Status Indians and Urban Aboriginal PeoplesThe Aboriginal Policy Research Network of the Office of the Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians is partnering with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to hold two workshops on research and policy relevant to Métis, non-status Indians and urban Aboriginal peoples. One workshop will address questions of increasing the social and economic inclusion of Métis, non-status Indians and urban Aboriginal people, while the other will address the challenges of preserving Aboriginal identities, new governance arrangements, and strategies to increase the engagement of Aboriginal people in political and civic life in culturally diverse urban communities.

C’est pourquoi, cette année, le Projet Metropolis s’est joint à l’Association d’études canadiennes et à la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines afin de produire une édition spéciale de Canadian Issues/Thèmes canadiens axée sur les expériences des jeunes de deuxième génération.

Réseau de recherche sur les politiques autochtones « Comprendre les défis des Métis, des Indiens non inscrits et des Autochtones urbains »Le Réseau de recherche sur les politiques autochtones du Bureau de l’Interlocuteur fédéral auprès des Métis et des Indiens non inscrits forme un partenariat avec la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines afin d’organiser deux ateliers sur la recherche et les politiques pertinentes aux Métis, aux Indiens non inscris et aux Autochtones urbains. Un atelier portera sur les questions relatives à l’augmentation de l’inclusion sociale et économique des Métis, des Indiens non inscrits et des Autochtones urbains, alors que l’autre s’intéressera aux défis entourant la préservation des identités autochtones, les arrangements de nouvelle gouvernance et les stratégies pour rehausser la participation des peuples autochtones à la vie politique et civique dans des collectivités urbaines culturellement différentes.

Panel Session: “Hannah Arendt: History, Judgment, Politics” Canadian Philosophical Association (CPA)Commemorating the 100th anniversary of her birth, this panel explores the legacy of Hannah Arendt’s thought with respect to some of the central themes in her work, including judgment, the nature of politics, the banality of evil and history. Arendt’s thought will be brought into dialogue with other philosophers, including Augustine, Adorno, and Heidegger, in order to advance discussion and present philosophical possibilities that may serve to respond to the various questions raised by her work.

Keynote Speaker: J. Edward Chamberlin

Indigenous traditions incorporate significant differences in linguistic and other sign systems, and a wide array of attitudes towards author-ship, audience, custody, copyright, the secular and the sacred, and the oral and the written. These challenge some of the assumptions at the heart of our discipline; but they also give Comparative Literature a unique opportunity to develop new critical principles and practices.

Groupe d’experts : « Hannah Arendt: History, Judgment, Politics »Association canadienne de philosophie (ACP)Commémorant le 100e anniversaire de sa naissance, ce groupe d’experts explore l’héritage de la pensée d’Hannah Arendt pour ce qui est de certains des thèmes centraux de son œuvre, y compris le jugement, la nature de la politique, la banalité du mal et l’histoire. La pensée d’Arendt sera amenée dans un dialogue avec d’autres philosophes, dont Augustin, Adorno et Heidegger, afin de pousser la discussion et présenter les possibilités philoso-phiques pour répondre aux diverses questions soulevées dans son œuvre.

Panelists will discuss how innovative theory and research can enhance learning and teaching in diverse regions of Africa, and consider how their research findings might have relevance to the wider international community.

Using Almodovar’s film Bad Education and texts by Rousseau, Derrida, and de Man, Edelman will examine the challenge that queerness poses to education, and the way that queerness demands a reconceptualization of the humanities.

Hosington (Université de Montréal) will explore the dynamics of the dialogue between the sexes as it appears in translations printed in England between 1500 and 1640.

The question of the father — and in turn of the symbolic and power relationships between men and women — is raised with remarkable frequency and acuity in contemporary quebec fiction by both men and women. The Bovo-bukh (1507), she proposes, offers a new, humanistic version of Judaism to men and women readers in Italy and Germany. The life of its author, the famous German-born Hebrew scholar Elias Levita, like his rollicking poetic creation, both reflects major social currents of his day and exemplifies the “border-crossing” theme of this year’s Congress.

Connecting Research and Policymaking for International Development

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) Collaborative Program aims to facilitate the dialogue between the Agency’s officers and members of the Canadian and international academic community.

At Congress 2008, we are very pleased to support interdisciplinary sessions and a graduate students’ competition. Consult the ACLA, CASID, CASC, CCA, CSSE and CWSA programs for this year’s independently organized workshops, roundtables, and colloquiums supported by the CIDA-CFHSS Collaborative Program.

CIDA and the CFHSS wish to expand the dialogue among established academics, policymakers, and practitioners by including dynamic new scholars currently enrolled in a graduate program.

Winners of the 2008 CIDA-CFHSS Graduate Students’ Competition will be presented on Friday, June 6, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Building, room 103.

Delegate Services / Services aux congressistes

The Delegate Services office is located in the Art Gallery on the main level of the Student Union Building (SUB).

Delegate InformationUBC Staff and AmbassadorsUniversity staff and ambassadors are strategically located on campus to assist delegates with general information and directions; both are identifiable by their Congress T-shirts or “Ask Me” buttons.

Information kiosks Three information kiosks have been set up for the duration of Congress. Here delegates can find information pertaining to special events, and information regarding the UBC campus and Metropolis Vancouver. The kiosks are located at the North bus loop, on the west side of the Student Union Building on East Mall, and on the south Main Mall concourse near The Barn Coffee Shop.

Tourism Information For information on the city of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, delegates are invited to visit the Tourism Vancouver website at: www.tourismvancouver.com. Tourist information is also available at the information kiosks on campus.

Customized Campus MapsCustomized maps have been created for each association. These maps highlight buildings used, suggested walking routes, information regarding the operating hours of food outlets on campus, special event information, and a customized WiFi login and password. Pick up your map at the map table in the Congress Registration area located in the Student Union Building’s (SUB) Ballroom.

Lost and FoundAll materials lost or found in academic buildings are brought to the Lost and Found Office located in the Campus Security Office. The Security Office is located at 2133 East Mall, or can be reached from 9:00 to 17:00, Monday through Friday at (604) 822-9922.

Items lost or found in on-campus accommodation may be located at the respective property’s Front Desk.

Message Boards for DelegatesMessages for delegates received by the Congress Office are posted on a message board set up in the SUB Ballroom. Messages received by accommodation staff are posted on the respective residence’s message board.

Luggage StorageLuggage storage is complimentary for delegates wishing to store their luggage during the day. The storage area is located at Delegate Services, located in the Student Union Building’s (SUB) Art Gallery on the main level, and it is open during registration hours. Luggage storage is also available at Walter Gage, Place Vanier and Marine Drive for delegates accommodated in these residences.

Sustainability InitiativesUBC and the Federation’s Congress Secretariat have taken a leadership role to turn the 2008 Congress into the greenest to date. Although recent Congresses have seen an increase in environmentally friendly practices and measures, and the Federation’s Congress Secretariat considers efforts in support of sustainable meetings to be an integral part of its mandate, and this will be a break-through year.

Objets perdus et retrouvésTout matériel perdu ou retrouvé dans les bâtiments universitaires est déposé au Bureau des objets perdus et retrouvés dans le Bureau de la sécurité sur le campus. Le Bureau de la sécurité se trouve au 2133 East Mall, ou peut être joint de 9 h à 17 h, du lundi au vendredi, au (604) 822-9922.

Les articles perdus ou retrouvés dans les installations d’hébergement sur le campus peuvent être retracés au comptoir principal des immeubles respectifs.

Babillards à l’intention des congressistesTout message destiné aux congressistes que recevra le Secrétariat du Congrès est affiché sur le babillard installé dans la salle de bal du SUB. Entreposage des bagagesL’entreposage des bagages est gratuit à l’intention des délégués désireux d’entreposer leurs bagages durant la journée. La zone d’entreposage se trouve aux Services aux congressistes situés dans la galerie d’art du Student Union Building (SUB) à l’étage principal, et sera ouverte durant les heures d’inscription. L’entreposage des bagages sera également possible à Walter Gage, Place Vanier et Marine Drive pour les congressistes hébergés dans ces résidences.

Initiatives de durabilitéL’UBC et le Secrétariat du Congrès de la Fédération ont assumé un rôle de leader audacieux en acceptant de transformer le Congrès 2008 en l’événe- ment le plus écologique à ce jour. Bien que les récents congrès aient vu une augmentation des pratiques et mesures écoresponsables et que le Secrétariat du Congrès de la Fédération considère les efforts pour appuyer la tenue de réunions durables partie intégrante de son mandat, cette année sera sans précédent.



Around CampusLook for recycling facilities, including composting bins, located throughout the campus. Fair trade coffee and compostable cups, plates and napkins will be provided. Delegates are encouraged to use their own mugs whenever possible.

Registration and PublicationsThis year’s Registration Guide print-run was cut by a third. A PDF version of the Guide and more related information were posted online. As in past years, we encourage delegates to take advantage of our time-saving and paperless online registration system. All 2008 Congress publications are printed on FSC approved paper, and by an ISO-certified printer.

Delegates are encouraged to return their registration badges to designated drop off-boxes across the campus.

Delegates’ BagsDelegates’ bags are reusable and are made from 100% recycled materials.

The number of inserts and handouts has been strictly limited.

The Federation is partnering with the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) in support of its initiative toward reducing the ecological footprint of the Congress. As part of the society’s “sustainability challenge,” CSSE members are encouraged to bring their own bags when picking up their registration receipts and delegates’ kits. The success of this pilot project will inform the Federation’s future policies toward taking us all one step further in our efforts toward an environmentally responsible event.

TransportationThe university’s campus offers many accommodation options in close proximity to the associations’ sessions. In addition, direct bus service between Vancouver hotels and UBC’s campus provides an inexpensive and environmentally sound mode of transportation for delegates staying down-town. The Federation has been working with the city’s public transportation provider (www.translink.bc.ca) in order to assist you with customized, up-to-date schedules and routes which can be found at the front desk of the hotels, at the registration area and on the Congress website.

Taxi sharing is another good way to save on transportation costs and carbon emissions. Taxi boards have been set up in the three on-campus residences so delegates can plan shared taxi rides off-campus.

Online ProgramsThrough an agreement between the Federation and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) at UBC and Simon Fraser University, associations have been given the opportunity to explore and adopt Open Conference Systems (OCS), a free Web publishing tool developed by the PKP. OCS allows associations to manage conference calls and submissions as well as program schedules in a paperless environment. Participating associations’ programs will be hosted free of charge during this pilot project by SFU.

Carbon Off-setsIf you would like to off-set the carbon footprint of your attendance, visit www.offsetters.ca, a non-profit company founded by two UBC professors. All of its projects are monitored by a third party to confirm that they are producing emission reductions that are real and permanent, and which would not have occurred without the company’s involvement.

TransportsLe campus de l’université offre de nombreuses solutions d’hébergement à proximité des sessions des sociétés. Un service d’autobus directs entre les hôtels de Vancouver et le campus de l’UBC procure un mode abordable et écologique de transport pour les congressistes qui séjournent au centre- ville. Fitness and Recreational Services The university’s principal fitness facility, the BirdCoop, has a comprehensive range of exercise equipment and personal training services available for Congress delegates. A reduced daily drop-in rate of $6 is being offered to badge-carrying Congress delegates. The BirdCoop is located in the Student Recreation Centre, and is open Monday to Thursday, 6:30 to 21:00, Friday, 6:30 to 19:00, Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00 and 12:00 to 18:00.

The UBC Aquatic Centre has scheduled public drop-in times for its pool, gym, sauna and whirlpool facilities. The drop-in rate is $4.75 for adults, and discounted rates are offered for youth, seniors (65+) and students. For more information and for schedules, please visit www.aquatics.ubc.ca.

Printing and Reproduction ServicesCongress documents can be printed at CopyRight in the Student Union Building’s (SUB) basement, which is a full service centre offering copying, printing, laminating, binding and faxing. During Congress, the centre is open from 8:00 to 18:00. Alternatively, the Media Group in the basement of Woodward IRC is a full service multimedia facility open Monday to Friday.

Computer Resources and Email ServicesDelegates can check emails and print documents using the computer terminals and labs noted on the customized association map they receive at registration. Most workstations have Windows xP, basic MS Office (no Access), USB ports, CD-RW or DVD-RW drive, and sound cards. Printing is available for a fee at these labs. Public computer terminals are also located on the basement and main levels of the Student Union Building (SUB).

Congress delegates may access complimentary WiFi service from their enabled laptop and PDA devices. The login and password information is noted on the customized maps.

LibrariesConsortial borrowing agreements are in place as per CURBA and OCLC for delegates to assist with research and planning while at Congress 2008. Delegates must bring their current university library card and a valid consortial card to the Koerner Library or Robson Square Library Circulation Desk to receive a free community borrower card. UBC BookstoreThe Point Grey UBC Bookstore offers a full range of academic texts, general books, stationery and office supplies, computer supplies, university clothing and gift items. The bookstore is located on the corner of University Boulevard and East Mall. A coupon for the Bookstore is included in your delegate bag. The bookstore is open on Saturday, May 31 & Sunday, June 1 from 11:00 to 17:00, from Monday to Friday, June 2-6, from 9:30 to 19:00, and Saturday, June 7 from 11:00 to 17:00. It will be closed on Sunday, June 8.

Local TransportationThe following is a short list of available transportation options for guests arriving in and departing Vancouver.

From the Airport:The airport is serviced by 400 licensed taxis and Limojet Gold Express limousines 24 hours per day, seven days a week for YVR customers. Both can be found just outside of the Domestic and International Terminals. Taxis charge a metered rate based on time and distance traveled. The approximate fare for travel to downtown Vancouver or to UBC from the airport is $30. Limousine flat rates starting at $39 are charged for YVR-to-downtown Vancouver trips, depending on your choice of limousine type.

To the Airport:There are various ways to travel to the airport from downtown Vancouver and the UBC campus including taxis, limousines, the Airporter and the Vancouver Shuttle and Charter.

Airport ShuttleVancouver Shuttle and Charter is offering all Congress 2008 delegates a shuttle service from UBC to the Vancouver International airport from June 2 to 9. Departure times start at 8:00 with the last shuttle departing UBC at 16:15. Pickup locations include Walter Gage, Place Vanier and Marine Drive residences only. The fee is $12 per person, including GST, driver gratuity and luggage.

It is recommended that delegates register in advance by contacting Vancouver Shuttle and Charter at [email protected]. A shuttle registration table will be available adjacent to the Congress registration area in the Student Union Building (SUB) for on-site registration.

Individual tickets with date, time and price will be issued to passengers to verify that their fare has been paid. Please note that the shuttle is not wheelchair accessible. Vancouver Shuttle and Charter reserves the right to cancel the service if it is not financially viable due to low demand.

UBC’s North bus terminal is located beside the Student Recreation Centre, and is approximately a two minute walk away from the Walter Gage Residence. For detailed route, schedule and trip planning information for transit throughout Metropolitan Vancouver, visit www.translink.bc.ca.

All parking areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
