SPORTS NEWSLETTER

“It’s going to be a journey. It’s not a sprint to get in shape.”

- Kerri Walsh Jennings

September 2021

Dear all,

“Your dreams are what define your individuality. They

have the power to give you wings and make you fly

high.”

– PV SINDHU

Sports play a significant role in improving both physical and mental coordination.

Individual games teach us concentration and agile activity whereas team games

focus on instilling team spirit. In general it imbibes in us discipline, the value of

time, unity and togetherness. It certainly teaches the values of dedication and

patience and also how to handle failure.

Our school, DPS East, has a very rich sporting tradition and culture. The school

has conducted many workshops and training sessions aiming to improve and

inspire students, one such notable being the workshop by Ms.Wiltrud Melbaum

from Germany. The students of our institution have won many laurels and

podium finishes at State, National and International levels.

Personally speaking, I have been a sports person from a very young age. DPS

East has always nurtured and promoted my talents. My primary focus has

always been on athletics and football. I have won overall championships and

multiple medals at various levels for my athletics performance, all thanks to my

trainers and my school. I have also had the opportunity to play for and captain

the football team. I am grateful for the chance I have been afforded to contribute

to sporting excellence in our school as the Sports Captain for the year 2021-22.

Across the world the past two years have been very challenging. This is true for

the field of sport too. Considering the current environment, we shall strive to put

our best foot forward to participate and enhance the level of our achievements

in upcoming sporting events. I look forward to all of your support and

contribution in doing so. Let’s remember Shaquille O’Neal’ words , “Excellence

is not a singular act but a habit. You are what you do repeatedly.”

Warm regards

Ishaani Mahendra

“God took my disability and turned it into this-ability”

-Robert M Hensel

Although postponed by a year due to uncertainties and dismay caused by the Corona

Virus Global Pandemic, 2020 scheduled Paralympics that happened in 2021 (known

as the 2020 Summer Paralympics) went above and beyond to clinch every viewer’s

heart and soul. It was indeed a breath-taking, beautiful, and everlasting set of days

where one could feel the thrills of the games being conducted. From passionate

young sport enthusiasts to the older generations, every age group was immensely

interested in how our nation’s best athletes would give a tough fight, bring home

accolades and make our nation proud. Our nation’s athletes fell no short with regards

to this. They gave their best and brought home 19 medals (5 Golds; 8 Silvers; 6

Bronze) across several events that took place throughout the 13 days of the

Paralympic games. We clinched the 24th position in the overall nation medal ranking.

India sent 54 competitors across 9 diverse sports ranging from Table Tennis,

Badminton, and Discuss Throw to Shooting games.

Among this bunch of talented athletes, Mariappan Thangavelu won his second

Olympic Medal (First one at Rio; Gold Medal in the High Jump event in 2016). He

won the Silver medal at the T- 42 high jump event at the Summer Paralympic

Games.

The other impressive performances to be noted were of Avani Lekhara’s and

Singhraj Adhana’s stupendous performances. Avani participated in both the 50m

and the 10m Air Rifle Standing events where she won the Bronze and Gold Medals

respectively for our nation. Adhana won a Silver and Bronze in the mixed 50m Pistol

SH1 and Men’s P1 10m Air Rifle events respectively.

Thank you dear athletes for staying strong till the end and making our nation proud

again! You have inspired millions of people in our nation and beyond.

Jai Hind!
