I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed---and gazed---but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

My Heart Leaps Up, also known as The Rainbow, is a poem by the British Romantic Poet William Wordsworth. Noted for its simplicity of structure and language, it describes the joy that he feels when he sees a rainbow and notes that he has felt this way since his childhood. He concludes the poem by noting how his childhood has shaped his current views and stating that "the child is father of the man". Written on March 26, 1802 and published in 1807 as an epigraph to "Ode: Intimations of Immortality“; Wordsworth was in Dove Cottage, Grasmere with his wife, Mary. After he wrote it he often thought about altering it, but decided to leave it as it was originally written. It was published as part of Poems in Two Volumes in 1807. So was it when my life began;

So is it now I am a man;

So be it when I shall grow old,

Some commentators have speculated that Wordsworth felt such joy because the rainbow indicates the constancy of his connection to nature throughout his life. Others have said that it celebrates "the continuity in Wordsworth's consciousness of self". Many commentators also draw parallels to the rainbow of Noah and the covenant that it symbolised. Wordsworth's use of the phrase "bound each to each" in the poem also implies the presence of a covenant. Some commentators have drawn further parallels with the story of Noah. Harold Bloom has suggested that Wordsworth casts the rainbow as a symbol of the survival of his poetic gift, just as the rainbow symbolised to Noah the survival of mankind. Bloom suggests that Wordsworth's poetic gift relied on his ability to recall the memories of his joy as a child. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. (Source: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+9%3A1-17&version=NIV )

I forced my way through the crowd By jabbing my elbows and stepping on toes When all of a sudden, I saw a cloud in the shape of a beautiful rose Above the streetlamp, beside the tree Wavering in the dancing breeze They say clouds all have a silver line Myself, I believe the rumor's fine But now I insist that the saying is true After seeing that rose against a backdrop of blue How can I be so sure, you say? Well, I'll tell you what happened that day

That moment I saw the rose in the sky In shock, I stood still in the ground

And was knocked over by the crowd And heard my ribs break with a cracking sound

So I ended up in the hospital bed And that is all that can be said

For oft, when on this bed I lie

In a depressed or vacant mood I suddenly see in my mind's eye

That cloudy rose in the sky And then my chest fills with pain

And I remind myself never to do that again

The kind of sight that puts your mind at ease

I saw beside the lake and beneath the tress And they moved me Like they were based on the keys They were fluttering and dancing inside the breeze and seemed infinite Just like the stars that shine up in the belt of Orion across to the Milky Way They stretched along the coast in a never ending line All across the water marching across the golden silky bay

Wordsworth’s poems are refreshing and profound in many ways even for contemporary readers.

The connections between the ancient poems and modern everyday life could easily be found in Wordsworth’s works.
