Case Study: A closer look at revenue recognition challenges and solutions in the online dating industry

Online dating companies that sell subscriptions and premium products through an online channel face many challenges when deciding and implementing a revenue recognition policy. They must comply with regulations, maintain robust systems and processes that support revenue accounting, account for revenue reserves, and ensure proper controls over data accuracy. Such data ultimately forms the basis of variances between reported and forecasted revenues.Improving the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of revenue numbers amidst these obstacles has become an important objective for Accounting teams. Challenges and solutions will be discussed in this informative case study presentation.

Alexis CalderonFinancial ControllerThe Economist

Alexis is a CPA, CFE, and holds a MBA degree from University of Scranton. She currently works for a major international publishing company as the Controller for Shared Services, Americas. Earlier in her career, she worked for The Coca-Cola Company, United Nations Organization, and then moved to The New York Times where she spent most of her career.

Improving Internal Control and Streamlining Processes and Procedures through Shared Services

Cost reduction is often times the primary objective for shifting activities centrally. And when management plans to move transactions centrally, the cost of transitioning becomes a concern. However, cost saving is not the only significance of moving transactions centrally. A growing number of companies transferring transactions centrally believe that benefits outweigh its cost. It opens the opportunity for increased transparency, consistency and improves internal control compliance. Centralization also focuses on streamlining processes to efficiently and effectively deliver the required services. However, there are challenges and difficulties associated with centralizing transactions. How do we avoid pitfalls experienced during the transfer? To optimize the value of centralization, the key is that management should carefully plan and manage the transition throughout the stages.
