Running InDuring the first 500 miles or 800 km:

DO NOT exceed 50 mph (80 km/h).

DO NOT operate at full throttle in any gear.

DO NOT allow the engine to labour in anygear.

Economical OperationTo achieve the best possible degree of fueleconomy it is essential,as a first priority, toensure that the vehicle is maintained to itsoptimum level of performance in accordancewith Manufacturers’ recommendations.

Apart from regular maintenance there are anumber of areas where deliberate andconscious actions on the part of the ownercan achieve quite marked improvements.

The following are recommended:

• Accelerate gently through the gears.• Switch off engine if vehicle is expected to

be stationery for more than half a minute• Avoid short stop-start journeys.• Anticipate obstructions, junctions and

sharp bends and adjust speed asnecessary.

• Do not generate unnecessary speed.• Decelerate gently and avoid braking heavy

where possible.• Stay in top gear as long as possible at the

lowest realistic engine speed – but withoutlabouring the engine.

• Ensure tyres are correctly inflated.• Remove ski-rack or any other

unnecessary weight or obstructions• Use air conditioning only when necessary.

Note: In extreme climatic operatingconditions such as severe cold or extremeheat and dust, more regular maintenance willprobably be necessary.

Please consult your DMC dealer who will givefull guidance.

APPEARANCE CARE

WindshieldWhen washing the windshield, hinge thewiper blade (spring loaded against glass)away from the windshield. Wash the wiperblade with clean water.

The windshield wiper is hinged so that it maybe lifted clear of the glass when cleaning thewindshield. Never push the blade across thewindshield, this will damage the linkagemechanism.

WheelsUsing a brush with nylon or natural bristlesonly, the wheels should be washed with warmwater and detergent.

Roof Lining (Interior)Normal cleaning consists of lightly wiping theinterior roof lining with a cloth dampened in amild soap and water solution; it is importantthat the cloth is only dampened not soaked.

Leather UpholsteryThe leather should first be wiped with a clothdampened in warm soapy water followed witha second wiping using a fresh cloth and wateronly. Avoid flooding or soaking the leather.Finish by drying and polishing with a soft drycloth.

It is important to use a mild non-caustic soap(or soap flakes).

An occasional use of leather treatment isrecommended after the leather has been inuse for a year or two.

Stainless Steel Panels and Exterior Trim

Washing – Wash panels with warm water andlow suds detergent. Stains of tar or greasemay be removed with gasoline or whitemineral spirits.

Polishing – The car should be washed beforeapplying the polish treatment suggested byyour DMC dealer, to preserve the appearanceof the stainless steel panels.

WEEKLY MAINTENANCE

• Check/top up engine oil.• Check/top up brake fluid reservoir.• Check/top up cooling system.• Check/top up washer reservoir.• Check types for tread depth, visually for

MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS

Checking Engine Coolant Level – Fig. 1The cooling system is a high-pressure typewith see through coolant reservoir and isfilled with year-round coolant at the factory.

The coolant mixture is comprised of 50%demineralized water and 50% ethyleneglycol base for aluminum engine protection,as well as anti-corrosive and anti-freezingadditives.

For recommended service periods consultthe Service Maintenance Schedule.

Notice:

• Do not use anti-freezes with any boraxadditives as this chemically attack thealuminum and cause severe enginedamage.

• Do not use alcohol or methanol basecoolants.

• Have your anti-freeze protection checkedat the beginning of the winter seasonand/or before traveling to a colderclimate.

• Do not overfill. If frequent additions arerequired, see your dealer for a coolingsystem check.

• For any additional information regardinganti-freeze recommendations, consultwith an authorized De Lorean dealer.

The coolant level should be between the‘FULL’ and ‘LOW’ marks on the coolantreservoir when then engine is cool Fig. 1. Ifthe level is near or at the ‘LOW’ mark, addequal parts of ethylene glycol anti-freezeand water, to bring the level to the ‘FULL’mark.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove thecoolant reservoir cap under anycircumstances while the engine is operating. To do so could damage the cooling systemand the engine and could result in serious

personal injury from scalding coolant orsteam.Switch off engine and wait until it hascooled. Even then use extreme care whenremoving the cap from the expansion tank.Wrap a tick cloth around the cap and turn itslowly to the first stop.

Step back while the pressure is releasedfrom the cooling system. When you are sureall the pressure has been released, pressdown on the cap with a cloth, turn andremove it.

With the car on a level surface, and withoutdisturbing the filler cap, check that the levelof fluid is at or just below the ‘MAX’ markmoulded on the translucent reservoir body. Ifthe level is not apparent, wipe the reservoirtop and cap and around the luggagecompartment access hole to remove all dustand dirt. Unscrew the cap and lay aside on aclean newspaper. Beware of brake fluiddripping from the cap on removal, as thiscould have a detrimental effect on thesurface finish. Ensure that no dirt, water orforeign matter enters the reservoir while thecap is removed.

If the level of fluid is more than 25 mm (1 in)below the bottom of the filler neck, or if thelevel of fluid has dropped rapidly over ashort period, it is possible that fluid hasbeen lost from a malfunction, and likely thatair has entered the hydraulic system at themaster cylinder. The car should not bedriven until the malfunction has beeninvestigated and corrected.

The level of fluid will drop slightly, however,as the brake pads wear. If the reservoirrequires topping up, use DOT 4 hydraulicbrake fluid to bring the level of fluid up tothe ‘MAX’ mark, and replace the filler cap, tightening securely.

Checking Clutch Fluid Level – Fig. 3The clutch fluid reservoir is located on thefront bulkhead next to the fuel filler neck. For access raise the front luggagecompartment lid and pull out the largegrommet adjacent to the fuel filler cap Fig 3.

Wipe around the top of the reservoir andcap and surrounding body to remove dustand dirt before unscrewing cap. Ensure thatno dirt, water, or foreign matter enters thereservoir while the cap is removed.

If necessary, top up the reservoir with DOT 4hydraulic fluid to bring the level to within 10mm of the bottom of the filler neck. Replacethe reservoir cap and access grommet.

Checking Windshield Washer FluidLevel – Fig. 4The windshield washer reservoir is locatedwithin the body double skin at the left handfront corner of the front luggagecompartment Fig. 4. The reservoir should bekept topped up with clean water and aproprietary windshield washer additive (ordiluted methanol) to improve cleaning of theglass and remove grease, etc.

Notice:Do not use radiator anti-freeze, oil, gasolinefor any oil based material in the washerreservoir.

Checking BatteryYour car has a Delco FREEDOM battery. Itneeds no periodic maintenance. Its top ispermanently sealed (except for two small ventholes) and has no filler caps. You will neverneed to add water. The hydrometer (testindicator) in the top of the battery providesinformation for testing purposes only.

For full power needs a Delco FREEDOM batterywith the same catalogue number as shown onthe original battery’s label is recommended, atreplacement time.

CAUTION: FOLLOW THE PRECAUTIONSLISTED IN THE JUMP STARTING CAUTIONWHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR A BATTERY,PERSONAL INJURY (PARTICULARLY TOEYES) OR PROPERTY DAMAGE MAY RESULTFROM BATTERY EXPLOSION, BATTERY ACIDOR ELECTRICAL (SHORT CIRCUIT) BURNS.

Checking Belt Tension and ConditionIf a belt is worn, cracked or frayed, have itreplaced. To check belt tension, applymoderate thumb pressure (approximately 22lbs (10 kg) ) midway between pulleys andcheck the deflection on the longest run of thebelt.Belt DeflectionAlternator drive belt 6-10 mm (1⁄4 - 3⁄8 in)Air conditioning

compressor 6-10 mm (1⁄4 - 3⁄8 in)

Note: If a belt is replaced, readjust the tensionafter approximately 2,000 miles (3,000 km) ofdriving.

Checking Engine Oil Level – Fig. 51. Be sure the vehicle is on level ground.2. Turn off the engine and wait five

minutes.3. Pull out the dipstick (1) wipe it clean and

re-insert fully.4. Pull the dipstick out again and note

reading. if the level falls on the knurledsection, it is okay. If the level is near thebottom of the knurled section, add oil tobring to proper level. If ‘topping up’ isrequired, pull off the crankcase breathercap on the left valve cover (2) and addthe recommended lubricant. DO NOToverfill. Replace breather cap securely.

CAUTION: Engine oil may be hot. Cautionshould be exercised to avoid the possibilityof burns.

Checking Automatic Transmission FluidLevel – Fig. 51. Park the vehicle on level ground and set

the parking brake firmly.2. Run the engine at idle speed until

cooling fans begin to cycle – A/C off.3. Move the selector lever through all of

the gear positions and set it to the ‘P’(PARK) position (engine running).

4. Wipe any dirt from the dipstick cap (3)pull out the dipstick, wipe clean andreinsert fully.

5. Pull out again, and check the level. Thelevel should be maintained between themarked L and F on the dipstick.

6. If the level is near or at the L line, adfluid through the filler tube. DO NOTOVERFILL.

Spare WheelThe compact spare is designed to savespace and its lighter weight makes it easierto install if a flat tyre occurs.

If a flat tyre occurs, follow the jackinginstructions in this manual while keepingthese points in mind:

• Check the inflation pressure as soon aspractical after installing the spare (use of apocket-type high pressure inflation gaugeis advised) and adjust the pressure to 60PSI while the tyre is stored.

• Do not drive at continuous speeds over 50MPH (80 km/h) when compact spare tyreis installed.

• The spare wheel supplied with this vehicleis for EMERGENCY USE ONLY and shouldbe replaced with the road wheel and tyreassembly as soon as possible. When thespare tyre is in use the handlingcharacteristics of the vehicle will bemodified.

• Less than moderate speeds and corneringloads should be observed.

Notice:

Because this tyre is smaller than thestandard tyre, car ground clearance isreduced about 1.25 inches (30 millimeters).

To conserve tyre tread life return the spareto the storage area as soon as the standardtyre can be repaired or replaced.

Because the compact spare was specificallydesigned for your car, it should not be usedon any other vehicle.

The compact spare tyre should not be usedwith any other wheel, nor should standardtyres, snow tyres, wheel covers, or trim ringsbe used with the compact spare wheel. Ifsuch use is attempted, damage to theseitems or other car components may occur.

Do not use chains with your compact sparetyre. Because of the smaller tyre size, a tyrechain will not fit properly. This could causedamage to the car and could result in theloss of the chain.

Emission Control System (North America)

32

Federal and state laws establish the levels ofexhaust emissions that may be emitted intothe atmosphere by automobiles. To complywith these regulations, it is essential that yourDe Lorean by inspected and maintained inaccordance withe the scheduledmaintenance. (See Maintenance ScheduleFolder).

To control these emissions the De Loreanuses the following components:

1. Bosch K-Jetronic continuous injection, fuelinjection system.

2. Oxygen (Lambda) sensor closed loopsystem.

3. Three-way catalytic converter.

Notice:Unleaded gasoline is used to reducecombustion chamber deposits, and to preventlead contamination of the catalyst.

If lead fuel is used the catalytic converter willlose emission control effectiveness.

Notice:Damage to the catalytic converter can becaused if the engine is not performingcorrectly. Do not continue to drive yourvehicle if you detect engine misfire, noticeableloss of performance or other unusualoperation conditions.

CAUTION: Do not park your vehicle overcombustible materials, such as grass orleaves. They could touch the exhaust system

and ignite.Oxygen (Lambda Sensor Closed LoopSystem)The Oxygen Sensor Closed Loop Systemmonitors the exhaust as it leaves the engineand before it enters the catalytic convertor. The oxygen sensor signals the electroniccontrol unit to adjust the volume of fuel beinginjected into the combustion chamber.

Notice:The Lambda Service Warning Light willilluminate at 30,000 miles (50,000 km)replaced with a new sensor. Suchreplacement is necessary in order to maintainthe correct operation of the emission controlsystem. The indicator must be reset as partof the service.

Emission Performance at AltitudeTo ensure compliance with the EmissionRegulations at high altitude and maintainoptimum fuel economy and driveability yourvehicle requires adjustment to the enginesettings. A Service Bulletin has beensupplied to your Dealer to enable him toadjust the engine correctly. Your newvehicle delivered in a high altitude area willhave been adjusted prior to delivery, and alabel to this effect will be be attached to theengine settings label in the enginecompartment. If you have permanentlyrelocated to a high altitude area from a lowaltitude area or vice versa your vehicle willrequire adjustment to be made to achieve the

exhaust emission control, fuel economy, and driveability of vehicles originally sold atthis altitude. It is recommended that you takeyour De Lorean to your local Dealer and havethese adjustments made.

Note: It is not necessary to perform theseadjustments if you have intend to make onlya temporary visit to a high altitude location.Vehicle performance will remain adequate forany such temporary period.

Notice:Section 203 of the Clean Air Act prohibits anyperson to remove or render inoperative anydevice specifically installed on the vehicle toensure that the vehicle complies withEmission Control Standards. It is essentialtherefore that components to the correctspecification are fitted and specified enginesettings are strictly adhered to.
