DAILY EXCURS ION

Delos Island is one of the biggest natural open archaeological sites, of such importance. It is located at the northcentral side of Cyclades, westwards Mykonos and extents for 3,4 sq.km. In the ancient times, Delos was famous asthe birthplace of Apollo, but apart from a religious centre, was developed as a commercial one, as well. In theopen archaeological site, private residences were discovered in a good condition, containing admirable mosaicfloorings. More monumental constructions, such as temples, theatres, stages, gyms can be visited, too. Thearchaeological museum in Delos exhibits a great collection of statues, ceramic potteries, items of everyday use,jewelries and mosaics, well maintained. The archaeological island of Delos has been officially recognized in1990, as an UNESCO Monument of World’s Heritage.

DELOS

The guide dispenses the entrance tickets to the archaeological site andafter the ticket control, the group is gathered by the Agora of LaresCompetaliasts. Introduction to the mythological background, theprehistory and history of the island.. Our tour begins with theresidential quarter of the Theater (3rd Century B.C.), where we visit themost representative sample of a Delian House-the House of Dionysus.The featured highlights vary from a thrilling mosaic to unique wall-paintings and an extensive courtyard with intact marbled columns. Ourroute takes us by the House of Cleopatra with her statue adorning theentrance of an imposing courtyard. After a short stop by the House ofthe Trident, we reach the Hellenistic Theater of Delos at the top of thehill along with its public cistern. We then roll down the hill along thehigh-street towards the area of the Sanctuary with its congruentcommercial zone. The Sacred Way that leads down to the MonumentalGate to the Sanctuary (Propylaia) is bordered by the impressivecommercial buildings of the Hellenistic era: the Porticos of Philipp theV and of the King of Pergamos. At the core of the Sanctuary, we visitthe Treasury and as adjacent, the Colossus of the Naxians (7th CenturyB.C). After the Temples of Apollo, we culminate at the Terrace of theDelian Lions- the guards of the Sacred Lake- which extendseastwards from the Terrace.

After the end of the guided tour visitors will have some free time tocontinue individually with the options of either visiting thearchaeological museum, the museum shop, the cafe or furtherdiscovering the site through the tracked paths.
