Chapter History Brief—The BeginningIn the fall of 1856, Abner E Patton was elected president of SAE Chapter at the University of Ala-bama, Tuscaloosa. He had an ar-dent interest in the spread of the fraternity to other colleges. It was at this time that South Carolina College (now USC) came knocking at the door of the fraternity. SC Delta Chapter owes its existence to the work of James G Glass of Tennessee Omega. He went to Columbia in February 1882 and interviewed President Miles, of South Carolina College, concern-ing the conditions under which a chapter of SAE might be estab-lished there. President Miles gave him a warm welcome. The first two members of the chapter were Wil-liam St. C. Symmer and Philip H. Burney.

The two new brothers from this time on were valuable assistance to Glass in the building of the chapter. On the night of March 3, five more good mean were initiated. They were: John H Littlejohn, William S Jennings, Wal-ter O Nesbitt, Leonidas J Massey, and William McGowan. The next night, the chapter was regularly organ-ized and before the close of the year it had gained a foremost place at the college. Throughout the 1880s, SC Delta chapter developed a prominent role in the national fraternity and as a result hosted the National Conven-tion in December 1887.

SC Delta, at the South Carolina Uni-versity, was stricken from the roll of SAE chapters in 1897. The anti-fraternity men of the institution peti-tioned the Board of Trustees to abolish

the fraternities, alleging aristocratic tendencies. A member who, while formerly a student at the Univer-sity, had not been admitted to the fraternity introduced a bill into the state legislature. Upon the bill pressuring, July 1897 was set as the date when chapters at the Uni-versity must die. The members were determined to have the pass-ing of their beloved chapter re-membered, and two days before the edict went into effect, the eight fraternities united in giving a ball and a banquet, which was the most successful social event at that time at the South Carolina University.

After 25 years of just talk about fraternity housing, SAE now has the opportunity to construct a house as part of USC's Greek Village Project. The USC Board of Trus-tees approved plans to spend $4 million to develop a Greek Village site. USC has spent the money for the acquisition and clearing of the land, which has already started, while the sororities and fraterni-ties are to be responsible for raising enough money to pay for construction.

This village is located near the corner of Blossom and Assembly streets, the Strom Thurmond Wellness Center and the new basketball arena. Individual lots are being leased to fraternities and sororities. Initial cost estimates exceed $1.5 million for each house and each house will hold ap-proximately 30 to 50 people.

In order to be competitive and prepared when the "row" lots became available, the SC Delta Housing Corp started raising

the necessary funds and launched a major capital campaign in 1999, "Building for the Future", to raise the money needed to fund the construction of an estimated $1.5 million fraternity house.. In the "quiet" phase, a few alumni have already committed a total of $600,000. David S Lewis, ‘38, do-nated $250,000 to start the campaign. An Executive Committee has been formed and is working toward that goal

Several of the other fraternity chapters (KA, ATO, and Sigma Chi) have al-ready raised in excess of $600,000. The "row" lots became available last spring 2000, and the "qualified" groups will got to choose sites out of a hat. Con-struction is expected to start in 2001. For more information on the campaign, contact Bill McElveen, ‘80, phone 803-254-4190.

Undergraduate Spotlight—Ryan Lindsay, ‘00—“Hugs & Kisses”

Ryan Lindsay, a USC Honors College graduate that ma-jored in economics, is getting paid to give away kisses and hugs in his first job after graduation. Hershey’s Kisses and Hugs to be precise. Lindsay was one of four crew members who navigated two Hershey’s Kissmobiles across the country this past summer. The Kissmobiles are 25 feet long, nearly 12 feet tall, and resemble a row of three giant Hershey’s Kisses. Ryan said: “The strangest reactions you get are on the interstates.” Lindsay gave away thousands of Hershey’s chocolate and collected money for Children’s Miracle Net-work hospitals. For Lindsay, the 4 month long job was

great. “While at Carolina, I got a Rotary International Am-bassadorial Scholarship. I’ll be studying for a masters de-gree in economics at the University of Cape Town in south Africa in 2001.”

Lindsay and his co-driver also took turns wearing a big, silver chocolate kiss suit that was so hot, “I lost a few pounds sweating every time I had to wear it.” Along with an unusual job out of college, Lindsay grew up in Clemson, SC, but never considered attending the big orange univer-sity. “Way too close to home,” he said.
