From The Desk Of...The CEOOnce again we were the proud sponsors of the East County Historical Society’s Photo Contest. All photos were displayed at the Celebration of East County’s History on May 5th at the Historical Society.

We had many great photos depicting East Contra Costa County submitted and the three photos chosen will appear on the cover of future editions of The Monthly Grapevine.

First place was a photo titled “Butterfl y” by Brenda Simmons, second place winner was a photo titled “Love” by Brenda Simmons and third place was a photo titled “Beach Bum” by Jan Cushman.

For those of you who were not able to attend this function you can preview these photos on page 32 of this issue where you will also fi nd the names of our honorable mention awards.

All of the photos entered will now become a part of our County’s history because they will be placed in an album for visitors to view at The East County

Apollo Dental Dr. Sujatha “Sue” Padavettan has had a passion for dentistry since she was very young. So, in 2004, she opened Apollo Dental Care because she felt that opening her own office would be the best way to fulfill that passion. Dr. Padavettan, or Dr. Sue as many of her patients call her, says she is rewarded every day when she sees her service has changed a patient’s life for the better. Their smile of happiness brings them back to the office and she enjoys building personal and long-term relationships with patients.

Apollo Dental Care provides gentle, quality dental care for children and adults. Services include general and cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, braces, Invisalign, dental implant restorations and much more. Patient comfort and well-being are top priorities at Apollo Dental. The source of water for their dental units is distilled water (bottled water), which removes any chance of contamination from regular tap water like that used in most dental offices. In addition, they employ the use of digital radiography, which has much less radiation than regular X-rays.

The friendly and competent staff at Apollo Dental Care is dedicated to patient comfort and quality care. They provide the best and latest in dental technology and treatment options, utilizing the best equipment sterilization techniques available to dentists. In addition to general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, they work with specialists in Periodontics (gum diseases), Implant dentistry, and Endodontics (root canal treatments), as well as other specialists. The whole team emphasizes comprehensive quality care and preventive dentistry.

To keep customers coming back, Dr. Sue says she always strives to listen to patient’s needs. “My staff and I try our best in providing exceptional service that exceeds patient expectations,” says Dr. Sue. She goes on to say, “Part of that is providing the flexible hours to

Habits, Environment, and Speech ProblemsIn children detection of poor habits and speech problems needs to be addressed as early as possible. In some cases, excessive environmental forces like playing a musical instrument can change growth if forces are applied over a long period of time.

The habits of children both during the day and night time can also change tooth position and the jaw development too. In some children, the adenoid glands or the tonsils can get enlarged, causing airway obstruction which leads to open mouth breathing. This has to be addressed as soon as possible because the open mouth breathing along with the airway obstruction causes the jaw to grow

narrow and the muscles of the face also constricts the jaw and can lead to narrow face syndrome. Therefore, it is highly imperative to get children to see the dentist to get them checked and the dentist would recommend seeing the ENT to get the tonsils treated appropriately.

Tongue position problems can also lead to open bite which if not treated early can also cause unfavorable jaw growth. Normal speech development is virtually impossible if the tongue is not able to position properly against the palate and teeth. Some patients have vertical jaw growth problems which leads to an open bite, whereas some children having airway problems who are forced to breathe through their mouths can also exhibit narrowing of the upper and lower jaws affecting the tongue position.

It also affects the swallowing pattern of the patient as well. Therefore, regardless of the tongue thrust or tongue position problems, it is very important to get this diagnosed as soon as possible and get it corrected. Thumb sucking or fi nger sucking habits,

nail biting and pen or pencil biting habits have to be addressed as soon as possible. Children adapt quickly when treatment is started early on.

Therefore, it is very important to get children to see the dentist at least once every six months because early assessment enables the early identifi cation of problems, intervention and optimal treatment. Timing is crucial to get good results in the jaw growth and control of the tongue thrust, thumb sucking or nail biting habits.

How Important Is A Home Inspection?Whether buying or selling, a home inspection is always a good course of action.

A home inspection is a visual examination of both the physical structure and major systems of the entire home including: walls, ceilings, fl oors, decks, exterior covering, the roof, foundation, insulation and ventilation, plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning. It is not an appraisal to validate the value of a home, nor a pass/fail exam. A third-party inspector will give a report on the physical condition and suggest repairs or improvements to the house.

For buyers, a home inspection is performed during the inspection period in the sales contract. If a serious problem is found, it provides a tool for negotiation or reason to cancel the purchase.

More often, inspections reveal less serious defects that aren’t enough to warrant canceling the transaction. However, knowing about these minor problems can prevent major disasters down the road or aid in the long term maintenance.

Another advantage to having a home inspection is it offers buyers an opportunity to become familiar with their new home and learn about maintenance to help in its upkeep. It is always recommended that buyers be present during the inspection. This allows them to observe the inspection ask questions about the condition of the home and receive an objective opinion.

For sellers, conducting a home inspection (or pre-inspection) before listing their homes puts the control back into their hands.

By having a pre-inspection, the seller can help eliminate any surprise fi ndings after an offer has been made. The seller can make repairs before placing the home on the market and possibly even increase the value of the home.

A pre-inspection can also serve as a great marketing tool. Having a pre-inspection report available for buyers gives them a clearer picture of the condition of the home and shows a willingness of full disclosure on the seller’s part.

If there are major problems found during the pre-inspection, it gives the seller an opportunity to disclose the condition up-front, making it less likely for the buyer to pull out of the deal or try to renegotiate the price.

Knowing the true condition of a home can bring peace of mind to buyers and sellers; and be one less hurdle in the home buying and selling process. Ask your real estate sales professional for a list of certifi ed independent home inspectors in your area.

How to Patch Holes in WallboardA do-it-yourselfer can fi nd it necessary to cut a hole in wallboard to facilitate the installation home improvement. Obviously, such holes are necessary to the task and voluntarily created. On the other hand, a frustrated adult or an overzealous youngster – swinging a door open a bit too hard – may create unwanted and unplanned holes.

These holes can’t be easily hidden by installing a mere toilet paper holder. Anyway, who wants a toilet paper holder mounted in their dining room entry?

To hide an unwanted hole, folks often resort to strategic placement of paintings, wall hangings or furniture. If that does the trick then more power to you. However, if your attempt to cover the damage with furnishings proves unsuccessful you may want to read on for an easy solution.

An old time drywall contractor who works for our remodeling company taught

us a very simple method of making a wallboard patch:

1. First, you’ll need to create a patch from a piece of wallboard. The patch material will have to be slightly larger than the hole to be repaired. Many hardware stores or home improvement centers will sell partial sheets of 1/2” wallboard, which is ideal.

2. Start by cutting a patch (any shape), which is slightly larger than the area to be repaired. The patch does not need to be neatly cut – any shape will do. Place the patch-size piece of sheetrock centered directly over the hole, and using the patch as a stencil, draw a pencil line on the wall around the entire perimeter of the patch.

3. Next, using a wallboard saw, cut along the line on the wall and remove the damaged wallboard surrounding the hole. Note that the hole in the wall now exactly matches the patch that you made in step two.

4. Then, cut two pieces of wallboard joint tape each approximately seven or eight inches longer than the length of the patch. Apply a thin layer of joint compound to both sides of both pieces of joint tape.

5. Place the joint tape in a criss-cross fashion centered on the back of the patch.

6. Gently place the patch into the cut-out in the wall and stick the four pieces of excess joint tape to the wall surface surrounding the cut-out.

7. Trowel the joint tape to smooth it and then wait for it to dry. This completes step one.

8. Step two, three and four are to apply additional coats of joint compound over the patched area. An additional two inches of area should be covered with each coat of joint compound to ensure a smooth transition between the existing wall and the patched area.

If the wall has a textured fi nish, yet another step will be required. We have found that the simplest way to match most modern wall textures is with a disposable touch-up gun or with texture in a can. Both devices come with an adjustable nozzle allowing you to match several different fi nish textures. In order to achieve the desired fi nish, we suggest that you practice applying texture to a scrap piece of drywall before making the actual application.
