was seeing all of our hardwork and energy result inan amazing plebiscite turn-out and vote against thefirst Southlands proposal. As a member of the com-munication committee weworked long and hard hoursto get our message out.”

The choice for memberswill be between a long-serving municipal politicianand a successful businessperson, both having differ-ent strengths, he added.

Current Delta SouthMLA Vicki Huntingtonhas stated she will likely

remain an independent inthe next election. The NewDemocrats have alreadynamed Nic Slater as theircandidate.

Meanwhile, the racein Delta North got moreinteresting this week withthe Liberals announcingDelta council memberScott Hamilton will bethe party’s candidate for

that riding, where currentNew Democrat MLA GuyGentner won’t be seekingre-election. Hamilton willbe acclaimed at a nomina-tion meeting this Saturday.

“No single issue ismore important to BritishColumbians than oureconomy,” said Hamilton.“The next election is aboutprotecting and growing

our economy with PremierChristy Clark and the B.C.Liberals, or going back-wards under the NDP,” hesaid.

Hamilton believes theB.C. Liberals are the best toensure that Delta’s regionaltransportation issues areaddressed.

First-term Delta council-lor Sylvia Bishop was the

first councillor to throwher hat in the provincialelection ring, having beenacclaimed the NDP’s candi-date for Delta North.

A municipal by-elec-tion will likely be requiredto fill at least one vacantcouncil seat, and possiblytwo, after this year’s elec-tion. The provincial electionwill be held May 14.

Playing out future flooding scenarios

A video game is being developed thatwill enable local students to play out vari-ous flooding scenarios in Delta’s future.

Future Delta 2.0 is a video game projectled by Dr. Stephen Sheppard at UBC andDr. Aleksandra Dulic of UBC-Okanagan.

Having elements similar the interactivecity-building game Sim City, the gamewill enable players to become city plan-ners dealing with the implications of globalwarming and sea level rise.

“The video game is initially, at least, forhigh school kids,” said Sheppard, direc-tor of UBC’s Collaborative for AdvancedLandscape Planning (CALP). “Workingwith some schools in Delta, it’s very earlyin the life of this project. We were fundedto work on a climate change video gamethat was to be a place-based game in Delta,so Delta people and Delta school kidswould play the game and they would seeplaces they know and recognize.

“It would also deal with other kindsof issues, including sea level rise and itseffects on farming, and also how peoplerespond in terms of community energyand renewable energy, cutting their carbonfootprints and what their community wouldlook like. It’s to be a fun game that’s educa-tional for students who are studying climatechange in their curriculum and in sciencesclasses. It would make it meaningful forthem but also fun,” he explained.

Sheppard said students are being askedto provide input in the early prototype andhelp design the game. He’s hoping a finalversion will be ready to play later in 2013.

Delta has been working with CALP in anongoing project that uses computer model-ing to show what parts of the municipalitycould look like by 2100 due to sea levelrise.

CALP completed its first Delta climatevisualization project in 2008, focusing onBeach Grove. More visualizations madelast year show the possible futures of theRiver Road West and other neighbour-hoods.

Sheppard made a presentation to Deltacouncil last year, noting that approximately25,000 people live in rural Delta andLadner, which makes up much of the low-lying areas vulnerable to sea level rise.

Delta has approximately 60 kilometres ofperimeter dikes and seawalls that protect itslowland areas. Showing potential solutions, the computer visualizations are intendedto assist future decision makers with theunderstanding of the implications of cli-mate change.

Sheppard told the Optimist he was notsurprised by the conclusions in a reportrecently released by the B.C. government, which estimated combating rising sea lev-els due to global warming could cost $9.5

billion in diking improvements by 2100 inMetro Vancouver.

The report, Cost of Adaptation – SeaDikes and Alternative Strategies, lookedat cost estimates, including design, projectmanagement, land acquisition, environ-mental mitigation, impacts on utilities andpump stations as well as other factors.

That report follows another by gov-ernment in 2011 called Climate Change

Adaptation Guidelines for Sea Dikes andCoastal Flood Hazard Land Use, whichpredicted a sea level rise of one metrealong B.C.’s coast by the beginning of thenext century.

At the 2011 Federation of CanadianMunicipalities conference, a motion byDelta was endorsed calling on the seniorgovernments to work together to develop afunding program to assist coastal communi-

ties with flood protection. The submission states, “Local govern-

ments in the Lower Mainland have limitedeconomic resources. Many do not havethe financial capacity to fund large-scaleadaption projects. For seaside communi-ties, these types of adaption projects willinvolve dike/seawall upgrades, improve-ments to foreshore protection, and land useplanning and food level policy changes.”

Delta Hospital in need of advocacy groupDelta is currently without

a hospital advocacy groupwilling to take on the FraserHealth Authority, somethingsome say should change.

The Delta HospitalFoundation and DeltaHospital Auxiliary continueto be tremendous fundrais-ing arms for the hospital, but the last group to dealwith hospital concerns andcomplaints was supposedto be the Delta HealthcareAssociation. That groupbegan with much optimismbut faded a few years ago.

It was 2004 whenFraser Health and othersannounced the formation ofthe group that was supposedto meet regularly with thehealth authority.

The group’s genesis cameabout earlier in the decadewhen many residents werein an uproar following thehealth region’s announce-ment of major cuts forDelta Hospital, includingovernight closure of theemergency ward.

Delta council was avocal force lobbying forthe hospital at that gal-vanizing time. Two localgroups would also emerge

as a sounding board for thecommunity — the DeltaHealth Coalition and SaveDelta Hospital Society, thelatter collecting a 31,000-name petition to pressuregovernment.

Fraser Health would goon to make a number ofcuts but backed off fromclosing the emergencydepartment.

Since then things havechanged, primarily for thebetter. The hospital’s acutebeds were restored andexpanded, a CT scanner wasadded and the emergencydepartment increased insize. The hospital founda-tion and auxiliary haveraised millions for newequipment and amenities.

However, following arecent story published inthe Optimist about a Ladnerfamily doctor upset aboutlong wait times for testresults at the hospital, thequestion was posed why thehealthcare association, oranother advocacy group, isno longer active in the com-munity to raise such issues.

Former auxiliarypresident Elaine Canning, who was a member ofthe healthcare associa-tion board, said as far asshe knew the association

decided to dissolve. Shesaid it was due to a lack ofinterest from the commu-nity because the threat tothe hospital had passed andimprovements had takenplace.

“All of us on the (hospi-tal) auxiliary, we’ll never letour guard down, but therecomes a point when youhave to move on. There’sbeen enormous changes atFraser Health,” she said.

Canning said there’s stillenough concern and inter-est within the communitywhen it comes to the hos-pital, which could be seenwhen Fraser Health CAODr. Nigel Murray made apresentation in Tsawwassena couple of months ago andfielded some tough ques-tions. Canning was one ofthose questioners, askingabout the possibility of hav-ing kidney dialysis servicesavailable closer to home soresidents, especially seniors, didn’t have to make theirway to Surrey.

Canning believes anotherbig issue that’s going tohave to be addressed istransportation for a grow-ing number of older peoplerequiring specialized treat-ments at so-called “centresof excellence.”

Former Save DeltaHospital Society memberDoug Massey said thefoundation and auxiliary doa tremendous job as fund-raising groups, but can’t beexpected to also vet com-plaints about health careissues.

Massey, who cameup with a communityDeclaration of Dependencefor the hospital, which wasendorsed by Delta council, said it’s concerning there’sno advocacy/lobby group

that can meet with thehealth authority and getanswers.

“A problem with thehealthcare association wasFraser Health set its man-date and it wasn’t seen asindependent. It was con-trolled by Fraser Health,”he said.

Delta South MLA VickiHuntington noted the ideaof having a Delta advocacygroup to get answers abouthealth care issues is still agood one.

The hospital recentlyunderwent a new long-term service plan review, which was approved by thehealth region. That MasterConcept Plan will seeboth short- and long-termimprovements in servicesonce funding is found.

The first to get underwayis a larger diagnostic imag-ing wing and laboratory. That project will cost wellover $11 million, with thefoundation committing over$7 million.

Special meeting draws few

There wasn’t much of a crowd at a special Delta council meeting at municipal hall late last month to give conditional approval toa bylaw banning pay parking in all public use zones. Ian Paton was the only councillor in attendance for the quick meeting, whilecouncillors Bruce McDonald, Jeannie Kanakos and Scott Hamilton, as well as Mayor Lois Jackson, participated by phone. Finalapproval of the new bylaw was scheduled for another afternoon meeting the following day. The bylaw is the result of the municipal-ity’s opposition to TransLink’s plan to implement fees at all park-and-ride lots.

The Corporation of Delta is urging resi-dents to give their Christmas trees a secondlife as the holiday season winds down.

Christmas trees, like other green wastematerial, are compostable and can beturned into nutrient-rich soil to help growfuture Christmas trees.

Residents looking to dispose of theirChristmas tree have three options.

Delta’s Lions Clubs are once againoffering tree chipping. This year, chippingevents will take place in all three com-munities on Jan. 5 and 6. In Tsawwassen, chipping will take place in the South DeltaRecreation Centre parking lot from 9 a.m.until 4 p.m. In Ladner, Christmas trees will

be chipped at Memorial Park from 9 a.m.until 4 p.m.

Donations are accepted and the proceedsare used within the community.

Christmas trees will also be collectedcurbside on your yard trimmings and GreenCan collection day. The municipality asksthat residents cut larger trees in half tomake them easier to handle.

Trees can also be taken to Enviro-smartOrganics composting facility, which islocated at 4295 72 St. in Ladner, for com-posting at no charge. Call 604-946-0201for hours. As well, trees are also beingaccepted at the City of Vancouver’s landfillin Ladner.

Dredgingvictory ananomaly

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

We finally won one.It seems like this community is always

in some sort of battle with senior govern-ment, often times fighting the machineon multiple fronts at the same time. Frommere differences of opinion to all-outprotests, there’s a commonality to thesestruggles, including the part where theend result isn’t necessarily in keepingwith the community’s wishes.

From power lines and port expan-sion to the hospital and a new highway,we have become accustomed to eventsplaying out in a certain way, so the issueof dredging the secondary channels ofthe Fraser River had all the earmarks ofanother head-banging experience.

Since Ottawa had off-loaded theresponsibility for dredging more than adecade ago, the silt build-up in the chan-nels around Ladner had slowly but surelycrossed the line from inconvenience todangerous.

All the community, led by the LadnerSediment Group, wanted was for one ofthose giant dredgers to be brought in toremedy the situation. The request madeabundant sense, so much so it was dif-ficult to argue to the contrary, but thatdidn’t stop both Victoria and Ottawafrom doing their best to ignore the plightof those along the river.

It’s one thing to disagree over thealignment of a highway or what routepower lines should follow, but in thiscase it wasn’t like there was anotheroption, beyond simply not doing anythingat all, which seemed like an absurd alter-native given circumstances on the riverwere only going to get worse the longerthe work was put off.

Despite that undeniable certainty, oneyear stretched into the next without anymovement from senior government. PortMetro Vancouver put up some money,as did Delta, but that still didn’t promptthose in Victoria or Ottawa to act.

To their credit, the local contingentdidn’t give up the fight. The LadnerSediment Group got support from MLAVicki Huntington, MP Kerry-LynneFindlay, the Delta Chamber of Commerceand those over at municipal hall as ithammered home the folly of not under-taking the dredging. It shouldn’t havebeen surprising given the strength oftheir argument, but with history firmlyon the other side I was almost in disbe-lief when all levels of government gottogether last month to announce $10 mil-lion had been earmarked for dredging.

It made sense, there was no doubtabout that, but a victory in any dealingswith government tends to catch you offguard because they simply don’t happentoo often.

As our new year gets underwayand as we again get back into thegrind, I thought it might be usefulto offer a few glimpses of hope forthe time ahead.

The U.S. government is stillmired in an exercise of deal-ing with the excesses of the pastdecade. However most believe that‘falling off the fiscal cliff ’ is notto happen. The U.S. could leadCanada into a reasonably robustyear.

Here at home — between Ladnerand Tsawwassen a new roadwill emerge — the South FraserPerimeter Road. Cutting a swathacross rich farmland, it is a four-lane road designed to divert trucksoff Highway 17.

Recently announcements includecars going from the ferry to theFraser Valley. Vehicles coming off

the ferry or departing Tsawwassenand heading to Vancouver will haveabout three-kilometres added totheir journey as they take the SFPRto Highway 99, and then back tothe tunnel to Vancouver.

We have seen a year whereentrepreneurs have optioned muchfarmland between Tsawwassen andLadner, some of which has beendisclosed, and wherethe port continueswith its improve-ment (read expan-sion) plans.

Already the larg-est and most diversi-fied port in Canada,it wants more space— much more.Recently the presi-dent of the port authority declaredthat agricultural land should beused for port facilities.

More recently he has begunpleading for restrictions on rezon-ing and removing existing indus-trial land (where he will locate hisactivities) and using it for residen-tial purposes.

If this all seems complex, youmight go downtown and lookfor Coal Harbour — you know— where coal used to be broughtin, where ships used to be repaired

and where boats used to dock. Now we might call it ‘gold har-

bour’ as the enormous increase invalues of land and residential tow-ers that have taken over that land.Sadly, the port has sold its land inthis area and not used the funds toreplace the land they sold. Insteadthe money went off to Ottawa andthen back into port expansion in

Delta.In a recent

address to theVancouver Boardof Trade, the portpresident appealedfor a plan wherebythe port would haveenough land togrow, expand andthrive. Through dia-

logue he wants to dust off an oldplan for an Industrial Land Reserve— much like our AgriculturalLand Reserve. On this he has thesupport of Richmond pioneer andCoun. Harold Steves.

In his presentation — wait for it— he said: “I do not want to devel-op the small amount of ALR landunder our jurisdiction”. WOW!Time for Delta council to start offthe year on a fresh footing! Mayorand council — please call PortMetro Vancouver ASAP!

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Unless we wish to

reward the Hodgins’ long-standing and laudable gen-erosity towards our commu-nity and its institutions, theonly Southlands question isdoes the requested zoningoffer a net benefit to theresidents of Delta?

At this stage in theproposal’s progress certainissues seem relevant to thatjudgement:

Do we need additionalhousing? B.C. Stats reportsthe birth/death ratio is smalland going negative. B.C.needs more housing primar-ily to accommodate inter-provincial and internationalmigration.

Do we need more hous-ing variety? Tsawwassenoffers a range of hous-

ing types, but not all. Nomarket study provingTsawwassen’s need for thedensely built types Centuryproposes has been provided.

What would be floodproofing’s impact? An 11-foot high berm would sur-round the new community.Roads over it would accesshomes within. Centurysuggests an alternative thatfurther elevates buildingsand eliminates the berm.Delta’s consultant estimated147,000 dump truck loadsof fill. Century says theirapproach requires only60,526.

What new parks will weenjoy? Century previouslyproposed improved publicparks with trails. Now theyoffer unimproved land.Delta plans no development

of parks for our enjoyment, but there would be a newBoundary Bay access from56th Street.

Would farmland befarmed? Century mustfarm the land to secure lowfarm-rate taxation. Deltaownership would erase thismotivation.

Century proposes to leaseback 50 acres for 10 yearsand establish a governing

body and infrastructurefor a not-for-profit DeltaCommunity Based FarmDistrict. What would “not-for-profit” cost us? Deltaoffers no plan for the land’suse and provides no listof farmers eager to leaseit... either from Delta orCentury.

The project would con-tribute to increasingly con-gested peak hour traffic on

56th Street. Intersections at12th and Highway 17 wouldrequire upgrade within thetime frame of the build out.

What are the tax implica-tions?

If Century were to fundall needed improvements;the tax revenue from 950homes would far exceedthat now realized.

In my view, the net ben-efit to our community is

negative. The developmentseems attractive but itslocation yields negatives. Iregret this conclusion.

Delta’s failure to plananything appealing orproductive with their 80percent of the land yieldsno positives to offset thenegatives resulting from thedevelopment’s unfortunatelocation.

M“Ten Lords a-leaping” that’s what

my true love gave to me on this, thetenth day of Christmas!

What a wonderful song to remindus that there are indeed 12 days tocelebrate the wonder of God’s lovecome to live amongst us.

In the church, we begin on the13th day a new season called the“epiphany.” Indeed it is like the wordsuggests, “a brilliant idea,” or a greatthought!

We use the symbol of light aswe retell the story of the “magi”from the east following the star, finally arriving in the little hamlet ofBethlehem.

Perhaps they missed the crowds ofthe Christmas evening, but their jour-ney was determined and purposeful— they were looking for the new-born king — as the prophesies and

stars proclaimed.Perhaps they began their search in

the royal palace, a good place to lookfor an upcoming king?

But their journey took them to apoor home, where they saw a motherwith her first-born son, named Jesus.Kneeling at the foot of the lowlywoman and child they offered theirgifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These gifts may not have seemedlike the “necessities” of everyday life— rather they were luxurious gifts, symbols of kingly power, priestlyauthority and fragile humanity.

What a wondrous image to fill ourhearts for the season of Epiphany. This is what the season is all about— when we are filled with a brilliantnew idea — peace on earth, goodwill to all, mercy to the poor and thefull humanity of all God’s people.

Keys to finding success this yearBase your fitness resolution on knowledge, not numbers

As the calendar flips toa new year and we wavegoodbye to 2012, manyCanadians will use the cel-ebration to make a personalresolution and, hopefully, wave goodbye to old habits.

When it comes to pre-dicting the success of thesepersonal promises, a 2012study at the University ofScranton indicates this willbe challenging for mostCanadians.

The study discoveredthe No. 1 resolution is tolose weight and/or make ahealthy self-improvement.And, out of the 45 percentof people who make a NewYear’s resolution, only eightpercent will fully accom-plish it — with 39 percentof people experiencing‘infrequent success’.

But that doesn’t meanyou should return the work-out clothes you receivedfor Christmas or cancel therecently purchased gymmembership.

Greek philosopher Platoreminds us that “a gooddecision is based on knowl-edge and not on numbers.”

To increase the chanceof triumph, three leadingCanadian fitness expertsshare their ‘knowledge’ tohelp this year’s resolutionsbecome a success story, nota number.

David Patchell-Evans,the founder and CEO ofGoodLife Fitness, has 33years of experience helpingpeople achieve their fitnessgoals.

With 750,000 members,GoodLife’s enthusiastic

founder has many tips, butthe first one that comesto mind: “Get friends andfamily on-side with yourresolution.

“A ‘workout buddy’serves many purposes whenit comes to fitness motiva-

tion,” says Patchell-Evans.“They provide comfort forpeople who might be enter-ing a fitness club for thefirst time, they’re a greatreferee on the days whenyour motivation is waver-ing, and most importantly,

they’re your cheering sec-tion when you begin to seeresults.”

For the 16 percentof Canadians who havealready joined a gym or fit-ness club, their resolutionmay be to take their fitnessroutine to the next level.

Rod Macdonald, vice-president of canfitpro, thelargest provider of educa-tion in the Canadian fitnessindustry, explains that oneof the keys to success isenlisting professional help.

“Increase your supportgroup. Hire a personaltrainer, let your favouritegroup exercise instructorknow about your resolution, and tell as many friendsabout it as possible,”Macdonald says.

Lisa Belanger, an exer-

cise physiologist, says athird tip is to “make anemotional connection toyour resolution.

“Keep reminding your-self the reasons for youractions to keep you going. For example, ‘I am going tothe gym to stay active andkeep up with my grandchil-dren.’ Or ‘I’m eating morevegetables to avoid get-ting heart disease like mymother.’”

Base your ‘good deci-sion’ to become healthieron ‘knowledge’ rather thanshying away because ofintimidating ‘numbers.’By taking realistic steps toreach your goal, you’ll bemore likely to accomplishyour resolution and defy theodds.

About six months ago I walked into TWC withgreat trepidation and anxiety. I had been living inpain for 3 years as a result of a hip surgery that hadnot gone well and along with that, the other hip jointwas deteriorating quickly. Little did I know that myown personal miracle was about to unfold.I met both Linda Mallard, who owns TWC, andPatricia Tufts who would become my Rehab PilatesCoach and so began my amazing journey! After the first session, I was stunned at howcomfortable I felt and how I was coached intomovements I was able to do. In the sessionsfollowing, Patricia prepared me for my upcomingsurgery.I am now 8 weeks post op. My mobility andstrength have been remarkable in accelerating myrehabilitation.I am so grateful to Linda for this studio in mycommunity and that it brought Patricia’s inspirationand expertise into my life. The other team membersI see at TWC have been so welcoming. Mycommitment to myself, to continue to develop myknowledge and strength, and my commitment toTWC is embedded in my future. Delta Gymnasticsgoes rhythmic

Delta Gymnastics is introducing aRhythmic Gymnastics program this monthdirected by coach Bing Zhao, past coach ofthe Chinese National Team for RhythmicGymnastics and current Girls Competitivecoach at Delta Gymnastics.

“Rhythmic gymnastics is a disciplinewhich combines grace, coordination, agil-ity and artistry,” said Bing Zhao. “I amvery excited to offer this new beginner’sprogram at Delta Gymnastics as it will givemore participation options to many youngathletes in our community.”

The beginner classes will introduce threeapparatus.

The ball, which is weighted and is bal-anced on the body or rolled over. The highthrows of the ball contrast the precision ofthe catches which requires great skill andcontrol. The ribbon is a long, flexible andlight piece of apparatus that shapes pat-terns in space. Snakes, spirals and throwsrepresent the main routine elements whenusing the ribbon. Routines can be per-

formed with the rope open or folded, heldwith one or both hands, with or withoutthe rope changing hands. This requiresflexibility, agility, and gracefulness.

“We will offer two free trial classes forparticipants 6 years old an up. Typicallythis discipline is more geared to girls butboys are welcome to try it too,” addedZhao.

The free classes will take place onTuesday, Jan 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. andThursday, Jan. 10 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.Reservations must be made in advance bycalling 604-943-0460 or emailing [email protected].

Enjoy winter activitieswith less pain

The winter months offerno shortage of fun-filledseasonal activities.

Unfortunately, manyCanadians are sidelinedfrom participating in thethings they might normallylike to do this time of year, such as cross-country ski-ing, snow-shoeing, indoortennis or even going awayon vacation. People withchronic pain due to osteoar-thritis (OA) of the knee, forexample, often avoid evensimple things such as visit-ing family and friends overthe holidays. Chronic painis persistent, often lastingmore than three months. When associated with OAof the knee, the pain can bedebilitating, compromisingmobility and leaving suf-ferers feeling susceptibleto injuries — and isolatedfrom getting out and doingthe things they enjoy.

For the 10 per cent ofCanadians the ArthritisSociety of Canada says areliving with OA, managingchronic knee pain can bechallenging. What maypose even more difficult isfinding a safe and effectiveway to alleviate the pain sothat they can continue tostay active.

The most commonkind of arthritis, OA is aprogressive, degenerativedisease of the joint. In theknee, tissues are unable torepair themselves, caus-ing cartilage and bone toerode, resulting in stiffness, swelling and severe painin the joints. With time, the condition can result inchronic pain, so speakingwith a doctor or specialistis critical to ensure that apain management plan isestablished.

“Ongoing pain and stiff-ness in the knees should notbe ignored or accepted as asign of aging. If someonefinds they can barely walkupstairs, let alone partici-pate in the activities they

once enjoyed, it is importantthey speak to their doctoras it could be the result ofa serious condition thatrequires treatment,” says Dr.Philip Baer, rheumatologist.“Developing an individual-ized treatment plan can helppatients better manage theirpain so they can get on withtheir lives.”

Following these tips canhelp you better manage OAknee pain — so that youcan get back to enjoying theactivities you’d like to dothis winter:

Shed the poundsIf you are carrying

excess weight, adjustingyour diet to include moreservings of fruits and veg-etables and lower-caloriefoods, for example, canhelp you slim down.

Losing just 10 poundscan take pressure off kneejoints, reduce pain and helpimprove overall physicalfunction.

Get movingExercise and physiothera-

py can help improve musclestrength and joint stability.Low impact movement, such as practicing yogaand engaging in medita-tive activities, can also helpyou cope with pain. Do bemindful of your physicallimitations and work withinthem, so as not to over-exertyour sensitive knees.

Talk the talk — so you

can walk the walkSpeak with your doctor

to learn about the optionsavailable to relieve pain andimprove functionality. Anopen dialogue will help youto better understand yourcondition — and best treat-ment option.

There are a number ofover-the-counter medica-tions, such as acetamino-phen and ibuprofen, whichcan help relieve OA kneepain.

Prior to taking any medi-cation, always consult withyour healthcare provider.

If non-prescription medi-cations are ineffective, yourdoctor might recommenda new treatment optionfor OA knee pain called aserotonin-norepinephrinereuptake inhibitor (SNRI).Some SNRIs are safe andeffective oral medicationsthat can help turn down thevolume of the pain and arewell tolerated.

When discussing treat-ment options, be sure todiscuss the pros and consof each type, including sideeffects and possible addic-tive properties.

Brace yourselfWearing a knee sleeve or

brace is shown to providerelief from inflammationand joint pain, and can pro-vide some added supportduring activities.

South Delta BaptistChurch and theTsawwassen Legion

are getting together to pres-ent the Alpha Course start-ing later this month.

An introductory sessionfor the weekly course is setfor Tuesday, Jan. 15 at theTsawwassen Legion’s meet-ing room.

“The introductory nightis a really good night tocome and just see if thissomething you’re interestedin,” says Geri Pearson, who’s involved with minis-try at South Delta Baptist.

The course is designedfor anyone who is inter-ested in asking questionsor learning more about theChristian faith, according to

the Alpha Canada website.Meetings are usually the

same format each time.

There is a meet and great,a meal by donation, fol-lowed by a video and then

a roundtable discussion,Pearson notes.

She says the course

covers big questions like:What’s the purpose of mylife? Why am I here? Isthere more to life than this?Is there life after death? What about karma? Is Godreal?

She also noted the ideaof Alpha is those topics arediscussed in a relaxed atmo-sphere.

“The whole idea of theroundtable discussion isbeing able to explore thosequestions and do it in non-threatening, informal, casu-al environment. That’s whyI think the Legion is great, because it’s sort of got thatcasual feel to it,” she says.

The Legion’s TerryNylander says other groupslike the 828 Hurricane

The Legion has beenadvertising the room to thecommunity as a meetingroom that could be donatedfor good causes, he says.

“It’s a service we feelwe could offer to the com-munity.”

A tiny gem in the heartof the Alsace region,Colmar is too eas-ily bypassed but with itsunique medieval charm, cobblestone streets, andvibrant culinary scene, the rewards of what you’lldiscover make the detourworthwhile.

Unique Cultural MixTeetering on the German

border in the northeasterncorner of France, withina half-train ride Basel,Switzerland, Colmar iswhere French joie de vivremeets German efficiencywith uncharacteristic ease.

There’s little doubt thatColmar has earned thatgrace from history throughwhich the town has beenconquered, annexed, lostand won again since it wasfounded in the 9th cen-tury. In short, Colmar hasbeen in the Holy RomanEmpire, adopted ProtestantReformation, and even hada spell under Swedish ruleduring the Thirty Years’War. And through it all,Germany and France vol-leyed their claim with thetenacity of a Wimbledonchampionship.

Vive La HistoireIn spite of its turbulent

history Colmar has thrived, its charm so captivating thatwalking around Old Town’snarrow streets is to mean-der through all these timeperiods.

Its architecture alone isa pressed together collec-tion of imposing Gothicchurches with magnificentstained glass windows; lav-ishly decorated merchants’houses, and entire neighbor-hoods that still celebrate theregion’s early economies.

Examples include the

15th century Koïfhus,a complex of buildingsthat was once the heart ofthe town’s economic andpolitical administration.Although the slaughter-house, metal depository, corn and salt exchangeshave long gone, the old-est building — the Placedu L’Ancienne Douane(Customs House) stillstands.

Its arcaded ground floorbustles with bistro activitywhile above is a decora-tive balcony, ornamentalwindows and brightly tiledroof. Look too, for the17th century Maison deTete (House of Heads), sonamed for the profusionanimal heads, faces and gri-macing masks carved intothe walls, onto the doorway, oriel, jambs and mullions.

The Rue de Tanneurs(Tanners Street) is a high-light. It runs along thewaterway that has long shedits ‘tanner’s ditch’ facultyfor the more prestigiousnickname of Little Venice. The restored 18th centuryhouses here are typical ofthat era.

Very tall and narrow, theyhave no basements but reston a high stonewall withupper stories built of half-timbered cob walls madefrom a mixture of straw andclay.

Multiple MuseumsFor its size, Colmar has

a remarkable number ofmuseums, the best beingThe Unterlinden, which isarguably one of the finestsmall museums in Europe.Housed in a 750-year-oldDominican convent, exhib-its include Roman artifacts, medieval wine-makingtools, bridal trousseaus andhousehold items, all dis-played in striking contrastalongside military para-

phernalia and works of artby Renoir, Monet, Picassoand Leger, among others.

Colmar also pays homageto one of its most famouschildren, Auguste Bartholdi, creator of the Statue ofLiberty in New York. While you will find manyof the sculptor’s works incourtyards, fountains andeven as a gable capping, most are at the MuseeBartholdi, located off asmall and elegant courtyard. And yes, you’ll see theoriginal resin model castfor Madam Liberty as wellas an entire room devotedto reduced-scale modelsof The Lion of Belfort,France’s iconic sculpturethat stands at Belfort Castle,11 meters (33ft) high andtwice that from nose to tail.

Taste the VitalityColmar’s cultural dynam-

ic is positively palpable atevery turn, and no more sothan in its cuisine. This isthe heart of Alsace winecountry so even if you don’tdo the somewhat touristy“Route du Vin”, Colmar’smany bistros and en pleinair restaurants offer lashingsof local flavor.

Alsatian wines tend tobe heavier — even spicierthat you might expect, butthey are masterfully pairedwith the region’s signaturedishes: German inspiredSausages and Sauerkraut,Kugelhopft (a kind ofBundt cake), fresh bakedpretzels, and tarte flam-bee, a French-influenced,and very superior Alsatiananswer to pizza.

SDMHA House Party once again a big hitNinth annual minor hockey holiday event produces winners on and off the ice with over 400 players participating

South Delta Minor Hockeycontinued a holiday tradition witha successful ninth edition of itsParty In Da House Tournament.

This four-day event exclusivelyfeatures SDMHA’s recreationalteams. The games providedgreat entertainment for all whoattended.

The four division winnersSnipers (Atom), Knights (PeeWee), Giants (Bantam) andMoose (Midget) not only earnedlocal bragging rights but willcompete against their NorthDelta counterparts in the North/South Delta Challenge, later onthis season.

Congratulations to all players, coaches and everyone else whocontributed to this terrific com-munity event. This year’s volun-teer group was headed by TerryPrefontaine who has taken overfrom tournament founder TheresaWatts after her successful eightyear run.

Other tournament highlightsincluded the Hockey for HungerChallenge producing 1000pounds of non-perishable fooditems for the Delta Food Bank.Teams that generated the mostdonations received a Boot andSombrero certificate gener-ously donated by ATI AssociatedTelephone Industries. Winningteams were the Atom Ice Devils,Pee Wee Ice Army and MidgetCariboo.

Other winners included:Skills Contest — Atom GreenThunder and Pee Wee Attack.Poster Contest — Atom Snipersand Peewee Mighty Cows.Sportsmanship Award — BantamGrizzlies and Midget Big GreenBearcats.

New to the tournament thisyear was the very entertain-ing coaches game on Saturdaynight. Thanks to the generos-ity of coaches and fans, $400was raised for Canuck PlaceChildren’s Hospice.

Today’s paper features storieson wins in the Atom and BantamDivisions. Wednesday’s edi-tion will have the Pee Wee andMidget Divisions. All four storiesare currently available online atwww.delta-optimst.com

South Delta Giants prevailed in a highly-competi-tive Bantam Division at the SDMHA Party In Day HouseHockey Tournament.

South Delta Snipers captured the AtomDivision title in convincing fashion at theSDMHA Party In Da House Tournament.

The team rolled to a perfect 5-0 record, outscoring their opponents 30-10 in theprocess. The impressive run was cappedby a gutsy performance at both ends of therink against the Warriors last Sunday.

In their opening game, the Snipersbattled to a 4-3 win over the Green Thunderwith Brennan Katsube named game MVP.

In their second outing against the MightyPenguins, the Snipers rolled to a 9-2 vic-tory with Blake Clutterham named MVP.In the final round robin game, the boysshowed great teamwork and made it dif-ficult for their opponents to generate anyoffence in a 7-0 win over the Grizzlies.Noah Iverson took home game MVP hon-ours.

The Snipers finished second in round-robin play and squared off against the toughand gritty Wolves in the semi-finals. GoalieCairo Malhi played exceptionally well andgot the MVP nod in his teams’ 6-3 victory.

The final game against the Warriors

proved to be a nail-biter. These two teamshad met earlier this season and both meet-ings ended in a Snipers loss.

This time, they got off to a terrific start, opening up a 3-1 lead after one period ongoals by Katsube, Scott Allen (assistedby Evan Davies), and Clutterham. TheWarriors came on strong and made it 3-2midway through the second.

Katsube notched another in the finalminute of the period. A scoreless thirdfeatured outstanding goaltending by therespective teams. Avery MacNeil wasnamed MVP in the final game.

Other standout players include: RileyBavis, Charlie Everatt, Jake Harvey, AliJafri, Blake Morrison, Luke Spencer,Sajan Uppal, Erik Van Breemen, and SeanWiechers.

The Snipers take a 12-game win streakinto 2013.

This amazing group of boys is guidedby head coach Dave Clutterham and assis-tants Rich Allen, Colleen Katsube, MarkMorrison, Ron MacNeil, and team managerVirginia Davies.

Perfect run earns Snipers Atom title

The Sniperswon fivestraightgames tocapture theParty In DaHouse AtomDivisionchampion-ship.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Jan. 6 - Jan. 12, 2013★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continueson ambition, status, prestige relationships and yourdealings with authorities. From 2008 to 2024,higher-ups are serious, implacable, heavy-handed.Yet, from 2011 to 2018, rebellious urges visit youstrongly; you have seldom been so unwilling tocompromise. The result could be a battle royal: butbefore you enter it, contemplate their motives andyour options. To succeed, fulfill higher-ups’ dreamsand social wishes, which are the same as your ownfinancial, research and/or sexual goals. Sorry this ispuzzling: no other way to express it. Clues Sunday.

Taurus April 20-May 20: Soon love questionswill be resolved – the mysterious, the lustful, willdissolve to become understanding, gentle affection.(That’s not a decrease in love, but a transformationto a stronger base.) Continue, all month, to avoidfriction with higher-ups: smile, tackle chorespromptly. You might be “kicked upstairs” – into amanagement role. The nicest thing: these weeksare filled with a mellow wisdom: useless fears meltaway. Relationships (to autumn 2015) are slow, demand loyalty and “repeated effort” – but thistrend also brings the right mate to singles – cluesSunday.

Gemini May 21-June 20: As I predicted, yourfriendship circle has begun to grow over the lastfew months (compared to 1996-2011). This month, you might fear that the old barrier has returned, as asolitary mood steals over you. But this is temporary –by late January, and especially February to June (anddoubly especially in April) your optimism will return, and friendships will increase again! Meanwhile, usethe solitude, depths, mysteries and urges of thepresent to invest, or to make good changes in yourlife: bold changes! (Best Thursday/Friday.) Protecthealth Sunday/Monday. New vistas midweek.

Cancer June 21-July 22: This week starts withromance and/or passion – and/or, because thepassion can be creative, or about a risky venture,or passion for a child’s future. Be careful in these– a secret, a too-lustful approach, or a money orhealth factor (e.g., herpes) could lead love intodisappointment or anger. Be moderate.Tackle choresmidweek. Thursday/Friday bring opportunity andopposition. True love is a potential all week, but iftrue love is born now, it’s likely to be a fiery, perhapsrocky one! The weekend is for mulling, figuring it allout. All month, invest or research in career.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: A pile of work faces you.(With more chores than you might suspect on thehome front, as Sunday/Monday hint.) Might aswell plunge in and get it done. A relationship heatsup now into February – this can be love or enmity, but a definite societal, intellectual, travel, culturalor legal theme accompanies it. “Dynamic” couplesmight agree to wed – or travel. Tuesday/Wednesdayemphasize romance, pleasure, sports, creativesurges and speculative ventures, but only Tuesday“come through.” There’s that work – in spades –Thursday/Friday. Careful Saturday eve: wrongrelationship!

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent lies onromance, creativity, sports, games, charming kids, beauty and pleasure – you’re riding a winning streak, especially Thursday/Friday, when a new love affair ora new creative project could start. But work demandsyour attention, too. This week, a schedule keeps youfrom careening all over the place. (Ignore schedulesnext week, when opportunities need flexibility.)Sunday (better) and Monday (a dud) feature shorttrips, communications, curiosity and variety. Attend toyour foundations, home and family (and your need forrest) midweek – start projects Tuesday.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The focus lies on home, children, nutrition, land, security, retirement. Thesebasic matters are undergoing deep, significant changein the 2008-2024 period. Many Librans “made theirnest” in the last three years: but now you might bespending on that nest, or on your children. You don’tmind, because you see the lasting value involved. Still, keep expenses in line with a conservative incomepicture, now to late 2015 (clues Sunday/Monday).A romantic thread winds through January, couldlead you to a true mate, especially from the 21st intoFebruary. Security and amour don’t mix.

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The accent lies oncommunications and travel, especially Thursday/Friday, when a new project might emerge. Becurious – what you find now might form the basisfor future projects/actions. E.g., you might wanderinto a neighbourhood where your next home willbe. Act slowly, wisely and gently on the home frontall month. Your energy and charisma soar Sunday/Monday (though little might get done Monday – stickto routine jobs). Chase money, buy/sell Tuesday. Settleinto home comforts Saturday – a.m. lucky, p.m. not.Soon – not yet – a major, beneficial lifestyle changewill arrive.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Chase money (buy/sell, expand clients, tug your boss’s shirttail, etc.).That will be easier next week than this one, but bywaiting you might miss a good opportunity (probablyThursday/Friday) to launch a lucrative process. You’llfeel restless all month, as a streak of curiosity andwanderlust draw you toward a pleasurable (orromantic) destination. Reading, writing, news mediaand coffee shops can ease your itchy feet. If youhave feelings for someone, tell them. Don’t mistakesolitude for security. Lie low, rest early week. Youshine Monday/Tuesday! Travel Saturday.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charismaand effectiveness continue at a yearly high. Startimportant projects, see and be seen, call in favours, propose new schemes to bosses or employees. You’reon a rise! Money flows to you all month – bank it,or you could lose more than you gain. Spend only –carefully – on household items, real estate, food andshelter. Your optimism, cheerfulness and happinessrise on a swell of friendly feeling Sunday/Monday.(Monday, money and social plans might conflict.)Until late 2015 your hopes and wishes will be sober, serious – and more likely to come true.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Retreat, plan. Rest, contemplate. Support others, and seek support ifyou need it. Therapy, charitable acts, interfacing withgovernment agencies or corporate head offices –these go well. Your determination and sex appeal arestrong now, but keep them “in reserve.” Avoid over-exertion, and overstaying your welcome. By the 19thonward, you’ll burst into an all-round explosion ofaccomplishment. Higher-ups are observing Sunday/Monday. Smile, rather than vent your frustrationMonday. Hope returns midweek. But the full extent ofyour weariness hits Thursday/Friday: find sweet rest.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: This week and nextbring popularity, light romance, wish fulfillment, entertainment and optimistic plans for the future.Be thoughtful Sunday/Monday. Wisdom will nudgeyou to reject a money source that’s “tainted” or toosecretive. Be ambitious Tuesday; act early, take stepsto firm/form alliances and seize career opportunities.Wednesday’s the same, a pleasant, ambitious day– trouble is, it yields little. Stick to routine. Thatpopularity and light romance arrive strongly Thursday/Friday – enjoy! But retreat Saturday, take a rest. Allmonth, avoid unsavoury people and locales.
