photoinitiator causing cleavageand production of radicals thatinitiate polymerization by theiraddition to the double bonds inthe polymer system. Propagationleads to growth of the polymer,while termination is reached whenthe radicals are trapped within thefully cured film.

The first series of experimentsused two model formulations: A isbased on a commercial urethanediacrylate solid resin; Tg 56°C with2% Irgacure 2959 as initiator; andB is based on a commercialpolyester di-methacrylate with 2%Irgacure 2959 initiator. A secondseries employs the A and Bsystems with additional multi-functional acrylate monomers; M1– a di-acrylate, M2 – a tri-acrylate,and M3 – a tetra-acrylate ataddition levels of 20/80 ratio ofacrylate/solid resin. The reactivityof each system was determinedwith an RT-FTIR equipped with anenvironmental cell. After fiveminutes in isothermal mode atselected temperatures between 50and 110°C the molten sampleswere irradiated with UV light for120 seconds. Conversion wasmeasured and plotted againstirradiation time.

The tests on film propertieswere comprehensively discussedin this work programme and theconclusions were: the melttemperature is important toachieving good cure and fullconversion was best achieved attemperatures up to 110°C; Thepolyester and urethane (meth)-acrylate resins with differentbackbones and molecular weightsgave different reactivities and filmproperties, although thesedifferences lessened when multi-functional monomers were added.Films exhibited high resistance toscratch and solvent and thepolyester methacrylate basedsamples were more flexible thanthe urethane acrylate basedsamples

PPG’s Poland facility startsproduction of epoxy, hardener,alkyd and more for its PMCbusiness

PPG Industries recentlyannounced that it has startedmanufacturing protective andmarine coatings (PMC) at thecompany’s facility in OstrowWielkopolski, Poland. The facility,which previously producedarchitectural coatings and waspart of PPG’s Jan 2012acquisition of Dyrup A/S, nowproduces PMC products for theconstruction, petrochemical,shipbuilding and energyindustries. The plant nowproduces coatings for the PMCbusiness such as epoxy,hardener, alkyd, acrylic, zinc andpolyurethane products. PPG

Lanxess adding plasticscompounding plant in Brazil

Germany-based Lanxess will openits seventh factory in Brazil at end2013 or early 2014. It will have amega extruder to produce nylonand polybutylene terephthalatecompounds intended for Brazilianand Latin American auto industries.The company’s 2012 sales were€9.1 bn with Brazil accounting forabout 10%. Its Porto Feliz plantproduces paints, plastics, bladdersfor tyres and iron oxide pigmentsfor the construction industry.Lanxess invested $12.3 M for the170,000 units/y bladder facilityinaugurated in May 2013. A $103M investment will turn a Triunforubber plant into high performancerubber producer for green tyres.

Jotun sales: all-time high in 2012

Jotun reported operating revenuesof NKR 11.350 bn in 2012, upfrom NKR 10.659 bn in 2011,while operating profit was NKR1.126 M in 2012, compared withNKR 956 M in 2011. Thecompany’s total sales are higherin volume and value terms in2012 compared to 2011, whileEBITA posted growth of 15%.Profit before tax reached 1.055 Min 2012 from NKR 893 M in2011. Jotun’s operationsgenerated a good cash flow in2012 mainly due to the strongresult and partly due to reductionin working capital from 2011. Thecompany’s cash and cashequivalents stood at NKR 802 Mat year-end 2012, and thecompany had undrawn creditfacilities totaling NKR 1.9 bn.Jotun saw record growth in

decorative paints worldwide andcontinued high growth inprotective and powder coatingssegment, but posted lower salesin the marine coatings segmentdue to weak new building market.Falling raw material pricescontributed to improved grossmargin together with pricing andproduct mix management.

BASF to expand manufacturingcapabilities of Joncryl for coatingand more at its Pennsylvania site

BASF Corp recently announced itsplans to expand manufacturingcapabilities for products marketedunder the Joncryl trade name atplants located in Wyandotte, MI,USA and Monaca, PA, USA tosupport customer growth in theprinting, packaging and industrialcoating markets. Theseinvestments will provide additionalcapacity, operational flexibility andreliability. In Nov 2012, BASFannounced a major investment inemulsion polymer manufacturingcapacity in Freeport, TX, USA andheld an official ground-breakingceremony on 8 Feb 2013. Theplant is expected to be operationalby summer 2014. BASF has alsomade the decision to close itsmanufacturing site in Seaford, DE,USA, which has producedemulsion polymers since 1986.The Seaford site will close by theend of 2013 and production will betransitioned to BASF’s Wyandotteand Monaca sites.
