JULY 2013 3 FOCUS ON POWDER COATINGS photoinitiator causing cleavage and production of radicals that initiate polymerization by their addition to the double bonds in the polymer system. Propagation leads to growth of the polymer, while termination is reached when the radicals are trapped within the fully cured film. The first series of experiments used two model formulations: A is based on a commercial urethane diacrylate solid resin; Tg 56°C with 2% Irgacure 2959 as initiator; and B is based on a commercial polyester di-methacrylate with 2% Irgacure 2959 initiator. A second series employs the A and B systems with additional multi- functional acrylate monomers; M1 – a di-acrylate, M2 – a tri-acrylate, and M3 – a tetra-acrylate at addition levels of 20/80 ratio of acrylate/solid resin. The reactivity of each system was determined with an RT-FTIR equipped with an environmental cell. After five minutes in isothermal mode at selected temperatures between 50 and 110°C the molten samples were irradiated with UV light for 120 seconds. Conversion was measured and plotted against irradiation time. The tests on film properties were comprehensively discussed in this work programme and the conclusions were: the melt temperature is important to achieving good cure and full conversion was best achieved at temperatures up to 110°C; The polyester and urethane (meth)- acrylate resins with different backbones and molecular weights gave different reactivities and film properties, although these differences lessened when multi- functional monomers were added. Films exhibited high resistance to scratch and solvent and the polyester methacrylate based samples were more flexible than the urethane acrylate based samples Article entitled “Wood Coating by UV Powders” by two teams of researchers at French universities.
