Preface
Demographic Trends is Statistics New Zealands main reference volume on population andrelated statistics. It is released annually, and provides commentaries on major demographic
indicators of the New Zealand population. The topics covered are: population change andstructure, births, marriage, divorce, deaths, life expectancy, international travel and migration, subnational population estimates, and national and subnational demographic projections.
Unlike previous editions, Demographic Trends: 2011 does not contain population estimates forurban areas. Population estimates for urban areas at 30 June 2011 can be accessed fromInfoshare (under the Population category) on the Statistics NZ website.

Information about the data
Percentage changes
Percentage movements are sometimes calculated using data of greater precision than thatpublished. This could result in slight variations in the percentages reported.
Rounding procedures
Figures may be rounded to the nearest thousand or some other convenient unit. This roundingmay result in a total disagreeing slightly with the total of the individual items, as shown in tables.Where figures are rounded, the unit is generally expressed in words below the table headings, but where space doesnt allow this, the unit may be shown in figures, as (000) for thousands, etc.
Changes of base
Where consecutive figures have been compiled on different bases and are not strictlycomparable, a footnote indicates the nature of the difference.
Source
Statistics New Zealand compiles all data, except where otherwise stated. Both administrative andsurvey data have been used in this report.

1 Population change and structureNational population estimates give the best available measure of the size and age-sex structure
of the population usually living in New Zealand. Estimates are based on the latest census dataand on births, deaths, and migration since the census.
New Zealands population reached 4 million in the first half of 2003. The countrys first million wasreached in 1908, with the 2-million mark following in 1952. The 3-million mark was reached in1973 this was the fastest million, which was achieved in 21 years.
At 30 June 2011:
The estimated resident population of New Zealand was 4.41 million. The median ages for males and females were 35.6 and 37.9 years, respectively. Children (aged 014 years) made up 20 percent of the New Zealand population, people ofworking ages (1564 years) made up 66 percent, and those aged 65 years and over (65+)
made up 13 percent.
The Mori ethnic group estimated resident population of New Zealand was 673,500. The median age of the Mori ethnic group was 23.1 years of age, 13.7 years younger than
that of the total population.
During the June 2011 year:
Estimated population growth was 37,400 (0.9 percent). Natural increase and net migration gain contributed 33,500 and 3,900, respectively, to
population growth.

Demographic Trends: 2011
Population measuresThere are three main population measures produced by Statistics NZ: census night populationcount, census usually resident population count, and the estimated resident population:
The census night population count is a count of all people present in New Zealand on agiven census night. This count includes visitors from overseas who are counted on censusnight, but excludes residents who are temporarily overseas on census night.
The census usually resident population count is a count of all people who usually live inNew Zealand and are present in New Zealand on a given census night. This countexcludes visitors from overseas and residents who are temporarily overseas on censusnight.
The estimated resident population is an estimate of all people who usually live in NewZealand at a given date. The estimated resident population is the best available measure ofthe size and structure of the population usually living in New Zealand. The estimatedresident population at 30 June 2006 forms the base population for deriving post-censal
population estimates.
Base populationThe base population at 30 June 2006 was derived by updating the census usually residentpopulation counts from the 2006 Census for:
net census undercount (as measured by the 2006 Post-enumeration Survey) the number of residents temporarily overseas on census night births, deaths, and net permanent and long-term migration between census night (7 March
2006) and 30 June 2006
reconciliation with demographic estimates at ages 04 years.Population estimates after 30 June 2006 will be revised following the results from the 2013Census of Population and Dwellings.
Population growthThe estimated resident population of New Zealand at 30 June 2011 was 4,405,200. This is anincrease of 37,400 (0.9 percent) from the previous year, when the estimated resident populationwas 4,367,800. The population growth recorded in the June 2011 year was the lowest for a
decade.
The population growth during the June 2011 year was due to a natural increase (excess of birthsover deaths) of 33,500 and net permanent and long-term migration of 3,900. Historically, naturalincrease has been the dominant element in population growth. During the last decade, theexcess of births over deaths accounted for around two-thirds of New Zealands populationgrowth.
Median ageNew Zealand has an ageing population because of a shift to sustained low fertility and lowmortality rates. This is also observed in other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development countries. At 30 June 2011, half the New Zealand population was over the age of36.8 years, compared with a median age of 34.7 years a decade earlier.

7/31/2019 Demographic Trends 2011
15/166
Demographic Trends: 2011
The median age for females was 37.9 years at 30 June 2011, while for males it was 35.6 years. The higher median age for females reflects their higher life expectancy, which is 82.7 years, compared with 78.8 years for males (New Zealand abridged life table, 20082010). In the pastdecade, the median age has increased by 1.8 years for males and 2.5 years for females.
Age structureThe age composition of New Zealands population has changed over the last decade. Betweenthe 2001 and 2011 June years, the number of children (aged 014 years) grew by just 17,200(2.0 percent), from 877,200 to 894,500. In the June 2011 year, children made up 20 percent of allNew Zealanders, down from 23 percent in 2001.
The number of New Zealanders of working age (1564 years) reached 2,923,700 at 30 June2011. This age group, which accounted for 66 percent of New Zealands population in 2011,increased by 380,900 (15 percent) between the 2001 and 2011 June years. People in the olderworking ages (4064 years) recorded a much larger percentage increase (23 percent) thanyounger workers (7.9 percent) over the last decade. In 2011, the median age of the working-agepopulation was 39.4 years compared with 38.2 years a decade earlier.
The number of New Zealanders aged 65+ continues to grow. Between June 2001 and 2011 theirnumber increased by 126,500 (27 percent), from 460,600 to 587,100. The 65+ age group is itselfageing and this partly reflects the continuing improvement in longevity. The number of males andfemales aged 90+ increased significantly during the last decade, with average annual growthrates at 6.4 and 4.0 percent, respectively. Over the same time, the median age for the 65+ agegroup has decreased slightly, from 74.0 years to 73.7 years. Women significantly outnumber menin the older age groups. At 30 June 2011, the sex ratio for those aged 65 years and over was 84males per 100 females.
Mori population estimatesThe estimated resident population of the Mori ethnic group at 30 June 2011 was 673,500. TheMori population is much younger than the total population. Half of New Zealands Mori ethnicgroup population was under 23.1 years of age at 30 June 2011, 13.7 years younger than themedian age of the total population.
Limitations are inherent in the data used to derive Mori population estimates. For example, nodata on external migration for the Mori ethnic group are available. All estimates for the Moriethnic group are supplied only as a guide for research and other analytical purposes.

1. Because of reporting and definitional changes over time, such as between 1921 and 1926, this series should be treated
with caution. This series is as consistent as possible with the current definition of ethnicity.
2. New Zealand residents and overseas visitors counted in New Zealand at each census.
3. New Zealand residents counted in New Zealand at each census. These figures exclude residents temporarily overseas on
census night and make no adjustment for under-enumeration at each census, and therefore differ from the estimated
resident population presented in tables 1.031.11.
Note: This table omits censuses of 1851, 1861, 1864, 1867, and 1871, as Mori censuses were not taken in those years. All
census figures have been randomly rounded to base 3.

1. Number of males per 100 females.2. The estimated de facto population is based on the census night population count, updated for births, deaths,
and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate. De facto population estimates include
visitors from overseas, but exclude New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.
3. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for:
residents missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily
overseas on census night; and births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the
estimate. Resident population estimates exclude visitors from overseas, but include New Zealand residents
who are temporarily overseas.
Note: Due to rounding, individual figures may not always sum to the stated total(s).

1. Number of males per 100 females.
2. The estimated de facto population is based on the census night population count, updated for births, deaths, and net
migration between census night and the date of the estimate. De facto population estimates include visitors from overseas,
but exclude New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.
3. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for: residents missed
or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on census night; and
births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate. Resident population estimates
exclude visitors from overseas, but include New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.
Note: Due to rounding, individual figures may not always sum to the stated total(s).

1. For the estimated de facto population, excess of registered births over registered deaths.
For the estimated resident population, excess of estimated births over estimated deaths (both by date of occurrence).
2. For the estimated de facto population, excess of total arrivals over total departures. Excludes armed forces before 1987.For the estimated resident population, excess of permanent and long-term arrivals over permanent and long-term departures.
A minus sign denotes an excess of departures over arrivals.
3. The difference between two population estimates that arises from errors in the census-based estimates and/or components
of change. The adjustment is calculated at the end of each intercensal period.
4. From population estimates. Population change for the June 1991 year is not available, as resident population estimates have only
been revised back to 31 March 1991.
5. The estimated de facto population is based on the census night population count, updated for births, deaths, and net migration
between census night and the date of the estimate. De facto population estimates include visitors from overseas, but exclude
New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.
6. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for: residents missed or
counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on census night; and births
deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate. Resident population estimates exclude visitors
from overseas, but include New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.

Estimates for single-year and five-year age
groups have been rounded to the nearest 10. Otherwise, estimates have been rounded to the nearest 100.

1. Mori ethnic group. Limitations are inherent in the data used to derive Mori population estimates. All estimates for the Mori
ethnic group are supplied only as a guide for research and other analytical purposes.
2. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for: residents missed
or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on census night; and
births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate.
Note: Due to rounding, individual figures may not always sum to the stated total(s). Estimates for five-year age groups have
been rounded to the nearest 10. Otherwise estimates have been rounded to the nearest 100.

1. The estimated de facto population is based on the census night population count, updated for births, deaths, and net
migration between census night and the date of the estimate. De facto population estimates include visitors from
overseas, but exclude New Zealand residents who are temporarily overseas.
2. The estimated resident population is based on the census usually resident population count, updated for: residents
missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on
census night; and births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate. Resident
population estimates exclude visitors from overseas, but include New Zealand residents temporarily overseas.
Note: Due to rounding, individual figures may not always sum to the stated total(s). Estimates for five-year age groups
have been rounded to the nearest 10. Otherwise, estimates have been rounded to the nearest 100.
