We would love to share your news and stories. You are welcome to send emails and other material to the editor for publication. The closing date for the November issue is 20 October 2011. We will endeavour to publish all material submitted but reserve the right to edit or not publish your contribution. Any material published does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Danish Club or the Editor.

From the Editor

The heat is on and the Swedish Club is keen to

meet the Danish shooters at the Moose Hunt

on 15 October. The 2011 QLD Multicultural

Festival at Roma Street Parkland on 16

October is a celebration of the cultural

diversity of Queensland and I would

encourage members and friends from all

clubs to participate in the event. The festival

entertainment program is expected to be

announced shortly and will undoubtedly be a

big day out once again. See you there.

Make a Difference

At the August Cafe Danmark we had some great

help from several volunteers – a big thank you to

Eva and Jose Kaiser, Andy and Aase Brodersen

and Grete Hindsberger for participating and

giving a hand.

It makes a huge difference to the hard-working

team organising these evenings when we get an

extra set of hands/legs to either come early and

set up tables or stay after and help clear and

remove the tables and clean up, so don’t be shy

– this is the best way to ensure all of us can enjoy

the great atmosphere in the club and have a

good time.

Just ring the club mobile 0437 612913 and let us

know when you can give a hand – the next

opportunity is Friday 23 September.

Our upcoming October and November Cafe

Nights are always busy with the extra activities of

Christmas stalls, so any help here would also be

welcome.

What’s on at the Danish Club?

Café Danmark 23 September 2011 from 6 pm Come in and say hello to new and old friends and try our tasty ‘smørrebrød’: the

menu varies from time to time, but you’ll often find ‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, pate, roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese. And yummy hot

dogs. The bar is stocked with Tuborg and Carlsberg from Denmark as well as your

favourite Australian brews. If you prefer a glass of wine with your food, we have a good variety of whites, reds and sparkling on offer.

It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, ryebread and other specialty

breads and organic biscuits direct from Britt’s Danish Delights. Tea offers smallgoods and quality meats from Flemming, the Danish butcher at Woolloongabba, as well as

her own goodies including remoulade. It’s a good idea to order in advance and pick up at the café.

2011 Queensland Multicultural Festival

16 October 2011 10 am–5 pm

This is our annual opportunity to participate in a multicultural event and a fantastic

chance to generate funds for our club and we need volunteers to participate in a

number of tasks.

Saturday 15 October we will be at work at Roma Street Parkland setting up the stall and

packing up supplies at Austin Street.

From the 2009 event: The Denmark team is kept busy

Sunday 16 October the festival kicks off at 10 am and finishes at 5 pm – it’s a busy day

and although the committee members will be there, we need several volunteers to help

sell coffee, pastries, soft drinks and ice cream cones. If you were there last year, you’ll

know that it got pretty hectic at times.

We have split the day into 3 hour time slots (8 on each shift), but if you can only

participate for 2 hours, we will take that, too. Give Lone Schmidt a ring on 0437 612 913 or

email her at [email protected] and let us know when you’ll be there.

Information to Danes in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand from the Royal Danish Embassy From 1 January 2012 you need to go to the Embassy in Canberra or the Consulate General in Sydney if you need a new passport. From 1 January 2012 new Danish passports must contain digital photos, fingerprints and signatures. In this way, safeguards against forgery and misuse of passports are strengthened considerably. Passports issued before 1 January 2012 already has a digital photo of the holder. Your present passport is still valid until its date of expiry. The decision to introduce fingerprints in passports has been made at central level in the EU as part of the fight against terrorism, human trade, human trafficking, illegal immigration and other cross border crimes. With the new biometric passports Danish citizens will have the security of knowing that they are able to travel to countries which in the future will demand this type of passport for entry. With the new passport you are protected in the best way possible against someone stealing your identity and pretending to be you and against forgery of your passport. In order to issue a new passport, special equipment for taking photos, recording fingerprints and signature is required. The applications must be handed to and handled by specially authorized staff that will have access to certain data in the Danish Civil Registration registry, the CPR register. As a consequence, from 1 January 2012 it will only be possible to apply for a passport in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand by personal appearance at the embassy in Canberra or the Consulate General in Sydney. The Danish Honorary Consulates in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand will from that date no longer be authorized to accept passport applications. The same applies already for citizens of other EU countries residing outside their home country. They also have to travel to the capital of the country in which they reside or to their home country to apply for a new passport. What are my options until 1 January 2012? Until 1 January 2012 you have the options described on our website (http://oceanien.um.dk). The new passports will be valid for 2, 5 or 10 years – just as it is the case now. What can be handled by the Honorary Consulates from 1 January 2012? After 1 January 2012 the Honorary Consulates can still extend the validity of passports and issue emergency passports. A condition for extension of an expired passport is that it expired no more than two years ago. A passport can only be extended once and only for a maximum of 12 months. We recommend that you make sure that the authorities of the country or countries to which you plan to travel accept extended passports. For instance, it is not possible to travel to USA without a visa on an extended passport. An emergency passport is issued with a validity limited to the period required for the duration of the journey and the rules of the countries through which you travel. The maximum validity of an emergency passport is 12 months. An emergency passport must be surrendered to the Danish police or a Danish mission abroad after use. Travelling with an emergency passport may cause problems with other countries’ border controls. Therefore, we recommend that you make sure that the authorities of the country or countries to which you plan to travel accept emergency passports. Can I get a new passport during my holiday in Denmark? Yes. It is already possible – and cheaper – to get a passport through a municipality (kommune) in Denmark. All Danish citizens can apply for a passport at the Office of Citizen Services (Borgerservicecenter) in any municipality. It is not necessary for you to reside in or in other ways be attached to the municipality. You can find addresses of Offices of Citizen Services at www. kommune.dk (in Danish only). You may wish to call in advance for information about opening hours, booking of appointment etc. and inform the municipality that you reside abroad.

Can my child be included in my passport? No. Since 1 October 2004 children, also new-borns and children not yet named, must have their own passport. An Honorary Consulate may issue a temporary (emergency) passport if you are in urgent need of a passport. See above about emergency passports. Must children also give their fingerprints? No. Fingerprints are not collected from children under 12 years of age, but they still have to appear in person in order to apply for a passport. From 1 January 2012 applications for passports for children can only be lodged with the Embassy in Canberra or the Consulate General in Sydney. Must I also go to the Embassy or the Consulate General to collect my new passport? No, you may appear in person to pick up your passport where you lodged your application. You may also – as is the case today – have your passport mailed to you. Before the Embassy or the Consulate General forwards your new passport, you must send in your old passport for cancellation.

Over the years Zentropa has frequently been contacted by Danes living abroad

Subject: HEIMDAL'S HISTORY

At the last A.G.M. I got the "subtle hint" from the President, Søren, that I might take on the task of writing Heimdal's history from 1972 to 2012 ( the Club's 140 years' anniversary.)

I'm ready and willing to do this. I became President in 1984, but for the years 1972 to 1984, I could especially do with some help. If you have any information, stories or photos for the last 40 years of the Club's history, which you think could be of interest, I would like to hear from you by email: [email protected] or by ordinary mail to 28 Netherby Rise. Sunrise Beach Qld 4567.

My wife Eilan is presently re-typing the first 100 years' history, written by P.B. Hansen, the copy of which has now nearly become illegible. It is a very interesting and invaluable history of our Club. It concludes with the 100 years Jubilee Dinner in September 1972. We have the guest list and menu, plus a press article of the occasion, but no further information of this special occasion. So maybe we can start the next 40 years from there.

I look forward to hearing from you, no matter how "colourful" or controversial your stories are. They are all part of our history.

Med venlig hilsen,

Preben Kirkemann Nielsen, Honorary Member, Heimdal.

Note from the Editor:

We are also looking for copies of newsletters from this period. If you can help, let Preben or me know.

Dansk legegruppe for medlemmer af Heimdal

Fredag 9.30-11.30 i Heimdals lokaler, 36 Austin St, Newstead QLD 4006 Første søndag i måneden 10-12

– Tea lovede at hjælpe

hende, hvis hun spurgte på dansk og Ditte sagde: " Kan du gøre den venstre?" :)

Tilde ville fortælle sin far, at hun havde plantet frø –det blev til: “We planted frogs”.

****September Book Swap*****

Bring along a book that you have read,

that you wish to swap with someone else.

It can be any genre, it does not matter

whether you liked the book, or not – it is

just a way of breaking the rut of reading

the same authors and hopefully try

reading something/someone new.

BOOK REVIEW “UNSPOKEN” by Mari

Jungstedt

“Unspoken” opens with the expectation

of a crime about to be committed and

when the deceased body is finally found,

it is obvious it is a particularly vicious

crime. Outwardly it appears to be an

open and shut case of an alcoholic ex-

press photographer, who is robbed and

murdered for his recent winnings, but is

this just what it is supposed to look like.

Set in the picturesque and historic villages

of Gotland, an island off the coast of

Sweden, this novel is the first one I read

by this author yet the second in the series

( the first one being Unseen from 2006). I

do wonder why she is not more widely

known as her writing is pretty good, the

level of intrigue average to above

average and there is no way one would

suspect the killer until the closing

chapters. However, some Crime readers

may find this unappealing, particularly

those who sometimes get a bit annoyed

with a lack of clues to work out the

identity of the killer.

Intertwined in the crime is Jungstedt's

tragic story of a teenage girl, the child of

a single alcoholic mother, and her

personal and lonely story. One can

empathize with the plight of this girl and

how her vulnerability allows her to

become a victim. When she too is found

dead, Detective Knutas is convinced that

the murders are linked. But are the

readers?

I loved the descriptive element of the

wintry landscape and the visuals the

characters give you of their world. I do

wish that I had read this series in order so

that the main character's personal stories

would have held more meaning. The

journalist who uncovers important clues, is

having an affair with a married woman,

and although their story and part in the

book is believable, it did become

somewhat melodramatic, however it

could be said that this is indicative of

modern society. To sum up:

The good: Descriptive elements of scene

and empathy I felt for Fanny's tragic story

The Bad: Sudden and late appearance

of any clues to determine the killer

The Ugly: Leap of Faith that the murders

were connected

Happy reading,

Amanda McLaughlin
