When does a worker become an artist? Art is an expression of the will to keep reinventing oneself.

Art comes from skill according to the dictionary. Therefore: craft is art. For craftsmen are skilled. They can create things with their hands because they possess special skills. But art is also craft. The sculptor, the painter, the tattoo artist - they all use their hands to express themselves in shapes, colours and lines. Art always means freedom too. We have made use of our freedom.

With the lifestyle collection ‘Works of Art’ we break through barriers that standards and certifications impose on the world of workwear. D´mon, the architect. This is what the man calls himself because he creates structures and forms with his line art. He works outside the realm of the apparent. D´mon interprets the myths behind the things thereby creating a unique artistic form of expression.

He has been tattooing for 17 years. In 2013, D’mon Meuli founded the California Gold Tattoo-Studio on Sunset Boulevard at the heart of Silverlake together with John MacIntyre and Jeffery Page. D´mon's artistic vision has its roots in the universal connection of body, spirit and

soul. This is how he creates ethnic works that celebrate the origins of life. Sounds philosophical. And it is. D’mon has incorporated the philosophy behind engelbert strauss straight into the logo design. Lively and energetic - this is how he describes his interpretation of the ostrich.

Candiani Denim was founded in a small town near Milan in 1938. Since then, the Candiani family has been in control, now in the fourth generation. The parallels to the Strauss family are unmistakable. Luigi Candiani began weaving durable work materials 80 years ago. Luigi’s son Primo turned the weaving mill into a denim mill. Third generation Gianluigi launched the Premium Denim. Today, the Milan weaving mill stands for premium quality made in Italy. Alberto Candiani has turned the mill into the most sustainable, green textile company in the whole world. This is family business at its best. That’s something we know well in Biebergemünd.

In cooperation with Candiani, engelbert strauss has developed high-quality jeans with the characteristic selvedge look under its popular lifestyle label ‘Works of Art’. Selvedge is the weaving edge that differentiates it from conventional denim. It is created by means of a special production method - the fabric is processed on traditional looms. This process creates a unique grip, as the fabric weave is denser and firmer than with modern processes. Due to the special craftsmanship, variations appear on the surface of the fabric. This is how the distinctive selvedge jeans look is created.

Churchill’s hot sole

Vulcanisation is one of the oldest shoe-making techniques. The rubber is ‘baked’ under the influence of time, pressure and above all high temperatures. The individual sole components are MELTED to each other at an unbelievably high temperature. This makes the shoes extremely durable.

Vulcanised shoes have a chequered history. In 1839 it was discovered ac-cidentally how to make rubber from caoutchouc using sulphur and heat. It did not take long until shoes were being made with this innovative, elastic and also durable material. The style of the new tattoo and popart shoes are reminiscent of the beginnings of utility boots. Even Churchill and the British army placed their trust in the durability of vulcanised caoutchouc. But it is not all archaic - our pioneering spirit is found in the

toe area. A toe protection cap made of steel, vulcanised with a scuff cap made of caoutchouc - a real novelty for this type of shoe. But durability is not everything. And craft is also art. This is why we have incorporated our cool tattoo and popart motifs as prints on the casual rubber boots.

The limited Ladies Collection will be presenting new lady styles from spring/summer 2018: volant looks that are light as a feather and indigo patterns made of denim. The afterwork collection was shot at the artist hotspot Venice Beach.
