As you can see, we are starting off 2018 with a fresh newsletter design. The goal of the new layout is to en-hance the look and better showcase the articles. Our hope as a Board is to grow our advertising base, so please keep your ears and eyes open for businesses that may be interested in placing an ad with us.

I am looking forward to serving as your president this year — it is such a pleasure welcoming in the new year with you — a fantastic group of passionate Porsche peers! I am committed to continue growing our membership base by attracting new members. That said, if you have friends or neighbors who currently own Porsches and may be interest-ed in learning more about the club, please make sure to invite them to one of our monthly membership so-cials or any of our other fun events.

I am sure you all will join me in ex-tending a huge “thank you” to our outgoing president, Joel Godfredson, who did phenomenal work leading us over the past three years. I would also like to thank John Duclos, our out-go-ing vice president, for doing a fantas-

tic job. As you know, John has moved to Arizona where he is enjoying his new Cayman GTS and the warmer weather.

I would also like to express a heart-felt “thank you” to everyone who at-tended the holiday social last month and donated so generously to the Toys for Tots program. As you know, we encourage participation of all of our members; it is the driving force of what makes our club flow! If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering, please feel free to reach out to me or any of our board members.

Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to get ready for an exciting 2018 calendar of events. In addition to the monthly membership socials, we will have five HPDE’s (High Perfor-mance Driver Education), two Auto-crosses and plenty of day trips/tours to great destinations for you and your favorite car.

I am absolutely thrilled to be part of a very strong group of dedicated Board members. We are excited to get to work on your behalf!

Editor’s Thoughts

I will start the year off with a big THANK YOU to: Liz Moore for her help developing the 2018 newsletter con-cept; Marco Morales who stepped in as our Design and Production Man-ager; and our new AMR President, Denise Jordan, for her unhesitating and continued support. Without you three, this endeavor would be just an-other piece of scrap paper in the burn pile. Thank you!

We’re excited to present you with our newly formatted, full-color, news-letter. We’ve continued some famil-iar features, updated a few old ideas, and implemented a few new (or not seen recently) features.

For quick reference we’ve included not only a Table of Contents (one of those favorites we kept around) but added a small icon located to the outside of the page adjacent to each column header. Additionally, we will do our best to keep our features in the same sequence and location within the publication so you can get straight to your favorite read, or ad-vert, or picture...

We need YOU! While we’ve had a few wonderful volunteers contribute articles this month (thank you!), we are still desperately in need of our MANY members to step in and assist (See AMR website for desired articles). I’m only the Editor, not the Author. It’s up to YOU to give me something to edit. So, “git ‘er done!”

After you’ve spent a little time pe-rusing the pages of our new Mountain Passages shoot me an email with your musings. Maybe we’ll print it, and you’ll have “taken your first step into a larger world.” And who knows- maybe you’ll really enjoy it.

Looking forward to hearing from you,Matt!

As of Late

There is no tradition that has run longer in AMR than the annual Fall Tour. It has existed since the club was formed, 42 years ago. So, when it looked like it wasn’t going to happen for 2017, well we just couldn’t bear to see that happen. While this tour typi-cally requires planning up to one year in advance, with many test runs and lots of refinement, this time would have to be different.

With barely two weeks from incep-tion to the tour date, we came up with a destination, a route, and signed up twenty intrepid souls for the “Zombie” Fall Tour (far short of the usual 80, due to short notice). Why “Zombie”, you ask? Well, we’ve had a theme for every Fall Tour (i.e. the “Grin and Bear It” and “Moose-tery” tours), and being a couple of weeks closer to Halloween than usual, and since it “came back from the dead”, declaring it a “Zombie Tour” seemed most appropriate.

The gang gathered at the First Sat-urdays Car Show in Colorado Springs, where Porsche was the featured marque in October. Everyone was issued a “Zombie Survival Kit”, and

we set out on our way. For those who haven’t gone on an AMR Fall Tour in the past, part of the fun is the fact that no one knows where we’re going! The initial set of directions took the group to our lunch stop, at the South Park Saloon, in Alma, CO, known as the highest saloon in the country (and not just because mari-juana is legal in Alma).

After a delicious lunch, everyone was eager to open up what we had labelled the “second half” of the directions, to discover our destina-tion. To their surprise, the “second half” took them only to the top of a mountain pass (Tennessee Pass). We disclosed that we had packed tents in the back of our Cayenne, but no one seemed to (or wanted to?) believe that this was indeed the end of the tour.

Alas, we did have a trick up our sleeve, and we had a “third half” of di-rections to reveal when atop the pass.

We gave everyone an opportunity to guess the destination at lunch, and then a chance to change their guess at the pass. Everyone did change their guess, but to our surprise, no one guessed correctly.

We arrived at the Keystone Resort (our final destination), where dinner was enjoyed by all at The Historic Mint in Silverthorne. Prizes were given out, and lots of laughs were had. On Sunday, participants enjoyed another perfect Colorado fall day to explore the mountains, then headed home just ahead of an early autumn snowfall!

We’d like to thank everyone who joined us on such late notice and supported the continuation of AMR’s

longest tradition. We are looking forward to next year’s tour, but next time as mere participants!

Off the Line

The snow season is upon us. And, many of us have put our beloved Porsche away for the winter while others are fortunate to have Porsches that are designed to handle the snow. Either way, we will all be faced with driving in the snow. So, here are some quick tips to help keep us safe.

First and foremost – adapt to the conditions.

One of the most important actions you can take is to allow extra travel time. The resulting reduction in your stress level will help you more thor-oughly enjoy the season. And, arriv-ing early is much better than arriving late, or crashing.

The next action is to maintain much, much, much more space around you in traffic. Remember, your “two-sec-ond following distance” should be doubled for rain and doubled AGAIN for snow. You need the space. (No drafting in the snow!)

Modern vehicles perform very well in slick conditions however, the driver is the ultimate management system of the vehicle and the only part of this partnership that can prevent crashes. The car cannot do this for us, even with the technological advancements we have today. Just as a modern fighter jet still requires the reasoning and de-cision-making skills of a pilot, the car requires the same from the driver.

Confidence plays a major role in road safety. Some drivers do not possess the skill needed to perform at a high level, but they believe they do. While most people call that “over confident”, I call it “false” – it is inap-propriately placed confidence, and it is dangerous. Danger exists at the other end of the confidence spectrum as well. A driver who is lacking confi-dence may also drive in such a man-ner that increases the danger of driv-ing in slick conditions. Experiential, hands-on training provides the best opportunity to accurately align con-fidence with skill. Both are necessary to respond properly in a crisis.

Practice is how we develop profi-ciency in any psychomotor skill. Driv-ing is no different. We must practice our winter driving before conditions are at their worst. Take advantage of the next snow storm. Go out to an open area and learn how your vehicle will respond to acceleration, braking and steering. You may be surprised at how capable it is, or isn’t. And, you will develop skills that may save your life in slick conditions. Here are two techniques to practice:

•Threshold braking: accelerate to a safe speed for the area you are driving in and apply pressure to the brakes, progressively getting firmer and firm-er until they activate the ABS. You will know it’s activated when the brake pedal begins to feel different, you may also hear the system work-ing. You should also practice braking smoothly without activating the ABS – it may take a delicate touch to ac-complish this. You should be familiar with how the car feels both ways. If you have a vehicle without ABS then learning threshold braking will be absolutely critical.

•Acceleration: Apply slight pressure to the throttle and then gradually increase that pressure as the vehi-cle begins to move. This will help prevent spinning the tires. Then, try accelerating much more aggressively and learn how your particular trac-tion control system responds when it senses the tires spinning. Some systems are very intrusive and some are much more subtle. Again, become familiar (and comfortable!) with your vehicle.

Your knowledge, skill and experience are what make the biggest difference when driving in slick conditions. At-tending training classes is a great way to improve those areas, will improve the safety of you and your loved ones, and may greatly increase your confi-dence and enjoyment of driving this winter.

Here are a few quick thoughts about

preparing your vehicle:Summer tires are formulated to

work well in heat and their tread works well in the rain, snow tires are made from rubber that works well in the cold and their tread is designed for snow and ice. Neither tire works in the other tire’s area of specialty, they just don’t. So, what do you do?

We recommend owning two sets of tires, one for summer/rain and anoth-er for cold/snow. If that is not prac-tical for you, the best all season tire on the market is the next best option. Remember, tire technology advanc-es very rapidly, so last years best tire may be ranked middle of the pack this year. Find a good tire profession-al and learn from them. As boring as it may be, it is worth the effort, and you will feel more confident in your car as a result.

Buy new wiper blades! It is worth the investment. Specialized snow blades have coverings that help pre-vent ice from collecting within the arm, and which helps hold the blade more firmly on the windshield. Check your washer fluid every time you fill up with fuel.

Lastly, if you are ever stranded in a snowstorm, stay with the vehicle, it will provide shelter and is easier for rescuers to locate than a person. Run your vehicle for short periods only (to conserve fuel- your heat source), check regularly to make sure the ex-haust is clear of snow build up, and keep a window open just a little for fresh air (and so you don’t lock your-self out in the storm).

Mechanic’s Special

Imagine jumping into your Porsche Cayman and the driver’s seat con-forms to your body. You put in the key with your left hand looking forward to what comes next. Turning the key, you roll down the windows just as the engine springs to life producing that all too familiar sound that gives you a thrill. After seats belts, you put the car into gear and drive off. Your grin grows wide as you bring the engine up to a crescendo in “The Symphony in Flat Six”. But once you approach 70 miles per hour your head feels like it is ready to explode from the wind buffeting inside the cabin. If you have a late model Porsche (718/981/991) with the side mirrors lower on the doors, you might have experienced this awful situation.

So, what do you do now- roll up the windows? No, there is another choice

that allows you to keep the windows down. It’s a simple solution with this small and quick modification. Check out the AWE Tuning FoilerTM Wind Diffuser to fix the problem (Figure 1). It fits all 718/981/991 Coupe, Cabri-olet, and Targa models. It looks like OEM and if you aren’t looking for it, most people don’t even notice it. At $87 for two pieces of injection mold-ed plastic that may see a bit expen-sive, but I am here to say it can make a huge difference in wind buffeting at speed. The kit includes a driver and passenger side FoilerTM, some adapt-ers, and attachment screws.

Before ordering you may want to check one thing in particular on your current car because installation can be more complicated for some ve-hicles. First, following instructions on the AWE Tuning website (www.

awe-tuning.com/awe-tuning-porsche-foiler-wind-diffuser), use a flat trim removal tool to remove the interior triangle trim piece above the door panel (Figure 2).

You are looking for one of two screw variations- a “visible screw” (Figure 3) or a “hidden screw” (Figure 4). If you have the “visible screw”, all is well and removal of the OEM part and instal-lation of the FoilerTM is very straight forward, taking less than five (5) min-utes per side.

According to the AWE Tuning instal-lation directions, the “hidden screw” requires removal of the door panel in about thirteen (13) steps to remove the OEM part and install the FoilerTM. However, I found that the “hidden” screw” may not be very well hidden. On my 981, the screw is just below the top edge of the door panel. Using

Mechanic’s Speciala long (4-6 inch) T-15 Torx bit, I was able to remove the existing “hidden screw” and install the FoilerTM by pushing the panel foam down slight-ly. It took me just over seven minutes per side. That is much quicker than the estimated thirty 30 minutes per side when removing door panels, and there was no damage to the door panel foam. Just to be safe, since I was working near the door airbags I also disconnected the battery before removal and installation, per the AWE installation directions.

All in all, I am very pleased with the results. A test drive on a deserted road confirmed that the wind buffet-ing was completely eliminated up to speeds of at least (X) miles per hour (Editor’s note: “Really fast!”) thereby

saving my head from exploding. Top speeds may vary.

One Good Turn

I n early 2017, the Big Mission Motorsports Porsche Boxster teams shared with our fellow AMR members that we’d be racing all over the country to raise funds

for three very worthy charities. We accomplished our goal of raising over $30,000 on behalf of the Semper Fi Fund, Cancer Research Institute, and the Salvation Army in El Paso County. Thank you to all who have made generous contributions.

The season was a blur, with nine races spread through-out the year and located all over the country. The high-lights were getting an opportunity to drive such iconic tracks as; Daytona, Mid-Ohio, COTA, Road Atlanta and Road America. And there is a special charm to tracks like Heartland Park and Hallett. We drove over 25,000 miles hauling the cars back and forth between Colorado and the different track destinations. Even more amazing was the fact that we raced both cars just over 18,000 total miles within the actual races. We used 23 differ-ent drivers of which 15 were new to the team including four rookies. The majority of the team are AMR members that have come up through the Porsche HPDE program. Joining us at most of these races are several other teams made up of AMR members, also driving Boxsters. Their accomplishments this year deserve to be recognized (Bucket List Racing, Estein Racing Corp. and K9 Racing). You have represented PCA and AMR very well.

In the end, we were able to bring home nine podi-um finishes (including two wins) at six different tracks against 45 different GP1 teams in our classification- a true testimony to perseverance and hard work. It’s not easy achieving a podium finish while completing an average of over 650 miles non-stop during an eight-hour race.

We’ve learned a lot this year through error, different rac-ing strategies, and experiments with multiple mechanical set ups. So, what’s next for Big Mission Motorsports and

their two Porsche Boxsters? We’re going to go out and do it again in 2018, but even bigger and better! There are some new tracks on our radar: Barber, Watkins Glen, Brainerd and hopefully Sebring. Our goal is to raise even more funds for our chari-ties, and more podium finishes.

On the Marque

T he basic layout design of the 914 series borrowed from Porsche’s racing experience

and followed the fashion of a new breed of mid-engine sports cars.

It was fairly predictable that Porsche should opt for this layout in a road car, and VW was more than happy to back the proposal as a joint effort. The design for the new sports car had to be practical, could not look too much like a Porsche nor too much like a Volkswagen, while at the same time being representative of and accept-able to both parties.

The History of the Design of the 914 has often been connected to the designer Hans Gugelot.

The source for the worldwide spread of this mis-information is, most likely, the Porsche “Bible”- Karl Ludvigsen’s book “Porsche - Geschichte und Technik der Renn- und Sportwagen”.

Quote from his Book:

“How did a car have to look like that on one hand, had to fit into the VW Model-Line, and at the same time had to have the signature touch of Ferry Porsche. For marketing rea-sons the car had to be different from the current Porsche (ed. 911) Mod-el-Line. There was no intention to simply copy an existing design ... to solve this without bias, it was decid-ed to outsource the design to the company Gugelot.”

Gugelot was a highly respected industrial design house during the 1950’s and 1960’s, named after its founder, Hans Gugelot. During the early 1960’s Gugelot decided to in-dependently produce a proposal for an automobile. Once the shape had been finalized, the next problem was choosing the materials from which to build the car. Gugelot enlisted the help of the Bayer-Werke chemical company, and between them they came up with an ingenious system of using glass fiber sheets bonded to a

foam plastic core. From 1966, BMW-powered test cars were pre-sented to a number of big German car companies, Porsche included.

An alternative one-fifth scale wind tunnel model considered by Gugelot was very similar indeed to the new Porsche. But, ultimately, the full-size prototypes turned out nothing like the forthcoming Porsche-VW. They were front-engine machines made of advanced composite materials, and in fact looked more similar to a Lam-borghini Jarama, or the Jaguar-based Bertone

To prove the point, the following quote from the Grosse VW-Porsche Buch reads: “Inquiries with the Porsche factory, personal talks with Ferdinand Alexander Porsche the head of the Porsche Design Studios at the time, as well as talks with em-ployees of the Gugelot Company, did...not verify Ludvigsen’s theory. gelot was never commissioned with the Design of the 914. Furthermore, Porsche did not use the Gugelot-Auto as the base or template of their own Design.”

From Ferdinand Alexander Porsche: “Gugelot never did anything to the car! They had a car that had a few similarities with the 914, that’s all. The most one could do is to point out those similarities, but Gugelot had nothing to do with the car. It’s always the same, there’s a lot of talk and ru-mors, like when people say that my grandfather once worked for Renault ...”

Indeed it is fair and correct to say that the Neu-Ulm company was not involved with the production car in any way and Butzi Porsche’s design department can take full honors for the design. So, if nothing else, the Gugleot car probably provided a great deal of inspiration.

In the Zone

Brain Noise, Utah November 29, 2017 Perhaps brain noise is not a “place”

to use as a dateline for an article. But collectively, I’ve spent enough time there in the early morning hours over the years that it seems like a real place. It’s when I’ve apparently had enough sleep and I don’t want to wake others by knocking around the house. Certainly, many of you visit there too, and I’m not alone.

I toured many of the streets of brain noise this morning, most of them in the PCA neighborhood. (I assure you this is not a regular thing, but if you want to tell me to “get a life”, I’m OK with that.) So today I gave up, and got out of bed- EARLY. The noise was just too loud. Here are some of the streets that I drove through in PCA-town.

Llano Estacado? -Where did that region name come from? I’ll be trav-eling there tomorrow, so I guess I’ll find out. For those who don’t know of it, it’s the name of the smallest re-gion in Zone 9 located up at the Texas panhandle. It will be my first time to meet anyone in that region other than the region President, Joe Papp. If they are all like Joe, it’s going to be a fun time.

West Texas. My first visit to the WTX region begins this Friday, the day after Llano Estacado. More exciting times, meeting new (to me) Porsche-philes. Texas is BIG! I’ll be putting a lot of hours in a rental car, driving a big loop from Albuquerque to Amarillo to Lubbock to Fort Davis (site of the West Texas holiday party) through El Paso and back to Albuquerque over 4 days. Thinking about evasive driving

around Armadillos to avoid bent rims on the rental car.

Monthly letter. This is a dead end street in PCA-ville, because I have a deadline to write this months’ letter before I head out of town tomorrow morning. Probably the final straw that

made me get out of bed.Year-end thinking. Like most of us

November brings lots of thoughts about wrapping up this year, and things that we’d like to see in the next one. The brain noise list today includ-ed, and absolutely was not limited to-

-encouraging region leaders and their members to submit nominations for national PCA awards by December 31st. (see PCA.org).

-getting to three region Holiday parties in the next 11 days- including my local Intermountain Region- loads of fun

-getting registered for Treffen in Santa Fe next April. The registration site goes live December 27th!

-locking down the dates for a meet-ing of region president’s that will take place in El Paso in March.

-remembering to book rooms for Rennsport VI (late September).

-wanting to see more articles from

our regions in Panorama magazine in 2018.

The list went on and on. So I got up, made coffee, and fed the dog. As I walked outside in the dark to “water the dog”, I saw the newspaper de-livery car rapidly weaving down the

dark and empty street left to right, narrowly missing the curbs. As the newspapers flew out the window and slammed onto the driveways at each house, my mind went to straight to autocross in the West Texas region. They have no race track in their re-gion, but it sounds like they have a great autocross program. I’m sure I’ll hear about it when I meet the Lub-bock gang on Friday. In the meantime, I may lay out some cones to surprise the newspaper guy tomorrow morn-ing.

This is my last monthly letter of 2017. I just want to say what a privilege it is to have the opportunity to be zone rep for these 7 very cool, and very di-verse regions of PCA. I’m enjoying the role and I have many of you to thank for it. And despite the occasional vis-its to brain noise city, I’m really look-ing forward to 2018.

Are you going to RENNSPORT VI?If you are into Porsche racing or just into all things Porsche, the world’s largest gathering of Porsche race cars is set for Sept. 27-30, 2018.

Last held at the famed Monterey Peninsula racetrack in 2015 and drawing nearly 60,000 visitors, Porsche Rennsport Reunion is the world’s largest gathering of vintage and recent Porsche race cars, as well as those who have designed, engineered, and driven them to victory in the world’s most fa-mous sports car races. Hosted by PCNA, Rennsport Reunion VI will again feature the widest variety of historic racing Porsche competition models in the company’s 70-year history.

If you think you might attend, don’t wait too long. Even though it’s nearly a year away, the hotels within 25 miles on Laguna Seca (Mon-terey) sell out fast. There is no other event like it. Talk to some AMR members who have attended in the past.

Studio F. A. Porsche (of Porsche Design fame) in Zell am See, Austria, continued its evolution of the Rennsport Reunion theme, incorporating the world famous Mazda Race-way Laguna Seca “Corkscrew” turn into the official logo for 2018. The Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI logo will appear on official com-munications, around the racetrack, as well as on select merchandise, including a limited edition timepiece from Porsche Design.

“By prominently incorporating the “Cork-screw” into the refreshed design, the feeling of motion and speed will carry the memories of this Rennsport Reunion far into the fu-ture,” said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO

of Porsche North America. “We thank our colleagues at Studio F.A. Porsche for their contribution to what promises to be the best Rennsport gathering to-date.”

Tickets: Beginning October 18, 2017 ticket packages, along with options for camping and hospitality, are available directly from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca online or by calling (831) 242-8200. General Admission and paddock access is free for children 15 years and under with a paying adult.
