For decades, DPNC has provided the area’s best Summer Nature Camp. Our campers spend their days hiking, exploring, and learning about our woods, meadows, streams and local habitats. We believe that a strong environ-mental ethic can best develop in children who learn to love being outdoors. Our camp builds the foundation for a lifetime of love and respect for the environment. And it’s fun!

Our camps for ages 3 to 15 all work in concert with our mission: To inspire an understanding of the natural world and ourselves as a part of it – past, present and future. Our camps are guaranteed to provide your child with out-door fun, adventure, games, new skills and relationships, confidence building, education, natural history and expo-sure to local natural habitats! To enroll, please look at the camp offerings and register either online or in person at the Nature Center. Any questions, please email our Camp Director, Pauline Gaucher at [email protected]

Our classic Nature Camp provides a well-rounded experience for campers of every age. Children have the oppor-tunity to learn about a wide variety of ecosystems and habitats such as ponds, streams, meadows and forests, all around the Nature Center and on local field trips. Animal encounters are a favorite as we introduce our resident frogs, turtles, snakes, rabbits and birds of prey throughout the week. Children make friends and practice social skills through fun games, test their physical motor skills by climbing on our favorite rocks and boulders, and express themselves creatively through various art projects and activities. Nature camp brings children back to basics and nurtures their connections to the natural world and each other.

Looking for something a little extra? Specialty camps provide an added twist to the classic camp experience. Some specialty camps attend field trips to enhance their experience and they all explore unique topics and activities such as gardening, natural art, drama, animal care, reptiles and counselors in training!

Get the best of both worlds! Don’t forget to check out the camps we’re offering in collaboration with the Mystic Seaport, New England Science and Sailing (NESS) and the Mystic Museum of Art. Partner camps give kids a chance to add variety to the camp experience from sailing to survival and the stars! We have a new partnership with Camp Wightman that includes an overnight!

If parents/guardians so authorize, DPNC camp staff may assist in the re-application of sunscreen, in full view of at least one other staff member and other campers. We will only assist with rubbing it in on the back and face if necessary. The campers will be asked to do the rest independently, with our supervision. The parent/guardian is responsible for the first application before the camper is dropped off for camp. DPNC suggests dressing your camp-er in clothing to further assist in preventing damage from the sun (including hats). All sunscreen MUST be in original containers and labeled with your child’s name on it. We recommend you send an ample supply. We cannot be responsible for an insuffi-cient amount provided.

If parents/guardians so authorize, DPNC camp staff may assist in the re-application of insect repellent, in full view of at least one other staff member and other campers. The parent/guardian is responsible for the first application before the camper is dropped off for camp. DPNC suggests dressing your child in clothing to help prevent insect bites. Insect repellent MUST be in original contain-ers and labeled with your child’s name. Please check your child at the end of each day for ticks.

DPNC’s primary medication policy is to administer only lifesaving medicines such as epi-pens and rescue inhalers. I understand I must provide an Authorization to Administer Medication form, prop-erly filled out and signed by both my child’s pedia-trician and authorized parent/guardians. I under-stand that all medication must be in the original containers labeled with the child’s name, name of the medication, direction for the administration and date of the prescription. If this policy is not prop-

erly followed, I understand that the medication cannot be in the custody of Nature Center staff, and, if necessary, the child will be sent home. No special refunds or credits will be given for any camp missed for this reason. The Nature Center cannot be responsible for any lifesaving medica-tion that should have been provided for a child and wasn’t. I understand that any requests to accommodate exceptions to this policy must be brought to the attention of the camp director. Any

medication provided for a camper will be kept at camp for the duration of the camp week. I under-stand that it is my responsibility to ask for the return of any unused medication, and that all unused medication shall be destroyed if not picked up within one week following the camper’s depar-ture.

i’m in the parking lot on monday morning. what do i do next?No matter how many weeks your child attends camp, Mon-day morning check-in is at the front entrance to the Nature Center. This is a requirement for all campers every week. From the check in table you will be directed to your home base. That is where you will sign your child in and out of each day, unless they attend pre- or after-camp. Follow the signs to the large classroom for pre-camp and after-camp is in the main picnic area around the back of the Nature Center. At check in, it will be confirmed that you have submitted all the necessary requirements for your child to attend, including a health form. All medication will be checked in through the camp director at the check-in table unless you are enrolled in pre-camp. Pre-campers will check medication in with the early care instructor. We are a state licensed camp and campers will not be allowed to stay without a health form. This is the law.

what should my child bring to camp?A two strap backpack, comfortable for hiking. •

Bug spray and sunscreen. (at least enough for 3 applica-•tions) Parents apply before drop off. See our sunscreen/bug spray policies for details.

An extra set of clothes and possibly a hat. Consider cloth-•ing as sunburn, bug bite, poison ivy and tick prevention measures.

Sturdy hiking shoes. Proper footwear is critical at summer •camp for comfort and safety. Old “mud” shoes that your child won’t need to wear again are perfect. No flip flops allowed. Footwear needs to fit snug around their feet to prevent accidents from all the uneven terrain at camp. We cannot stress enough how important this is. Good shoes will enhance your child’s camp experience and keep them safe.

Rain coats when appropriate. We explore in ALL kinds of •weather. Yes, we play in the rain!

Non-perishable food! We cannot refrigerate. Some sug-•gestions are: peanut butter, almond butter, Nutella, fresh or dried fruit and vegetables, trail mix, granola bars, nuts, apple sauce, hummus, crackers, rice cakes, wraps, breads, muffins, dried cereal and hard cheeses.

Please send at least 32 ounces of water in a reusable •bottle. Tip: Freeze a half full water bottle at night, fill in the morning. It serves as a cold drink and ice pack all at the same time.

Please provide containers with lids so that messy uneaten •food does not end up all over the lunch box. We teach campers to “pack in/pack out” like the National Parks.

Most importantly, have them bring their imagination, •sense of wonder and adventure!

what if my child has food allergies, particularly to nuts? All camp staff are trained to handle allergies with the utmost care. Because of our non-perishable policy, we diligently sepa-rate campers with allergies from exposure to nuts and allergens. Children are not allowed to share food. Please bring all allergies to our attention. Our camp staff is epi-pen trained.

what if my child needs medication?DPNC’s primary medication policy is to administer only life-saving medicines such as epi-pens and rescue inhalers. Any requests to accommodate exceptions to this must be brought to the attention of the camp director. See our medication policy for details.

what if my child has a special need? The Nature Center can be a great place for children with special needs and we will always try to accommodate all children; how-ever each situation is unique. Please call the camp director to discuss your child’s needs at 860-536-1216 ext. 21204.

who are the camp teachers?Camp teachers and assistants come from a variety of back-grounds. Some are from our year round education staff at the Nature Center, others are school teachers, naturalists, students in environmental studies or education and often they are former campers! Many of our summer staff return year after year. Each group has a least one instructor trained in CPR and First Aid.

what is your bathroom policy? All campers must be toilet trained (including Ducklings). They use the outhouses and inside bathrooms at the Nature Center, Preschool building and Coogan Farm. Campers age 7 and up, after checking with their instructor, are allowed to walk to the bathroom with a buddy from various meeting areas including the tree house and picnic tables and required to check back in upon return. Teachers do not accompany campers into the bath-room. Where no facilities are available, campers use the woods with a balance of privacy and supervision.

what about safety? The summer camp staff are qualified and trained to be with children outdoors; however, nature is unpredictable. Injuries can occur at any time. Bee stings, falls off rocks and ledges, becom-ing lost, tripping over roots, snake or other animal bites and slipping into the water are all risks to which your child will be ex-posed. Our teachers are ever vigilant of danger and our mission is to teach campers to be active participants in their own safety. This includes not wandering from the group, asking for clari-fication if they don’t understand instructions, and responding immediately to safety directions. If you feel your child cannot

handle these situations, please think twice about sending them to nature camp.

do children nap at camp? No. Even our youngest campers spend as much time as possible outdoors and active during the time they are here. If your child still naps, you can consider the shorter day camps we offer.

Can we enroll for less than a full week? No. Summer camp is only offered in full week blocks.

Can i drop off or pick up late?If you need supervision for your child outside of the designated camp hours, we offer separate pre- and after-camp for a very reasonable fee. This service is also available only in full week blocks. We understand that occasionally children are picked up late due to circumstances beyond your control. We ask that you call the front desk 860-536-1216 or camp office at 860-536-1216 ext. 21204 if this happens to you. Your child will be placed in after-camp. At the discretion of the camp director, you may be charged for after-camp services.

mychildhasanappointment.Wherecanifindthegroup when i pick up early or arrive late? While we work with families to accommodate these situations, we also ask that you consider the group. It’s very important to communicate special requests directly with the counselors if you will be early or late. Please try to schedule appointments around camp and stay as close to the camp schedule as possi-ble. Camp home base is mostly just that. Our days are filled with adventures on the trails, in the woods and on field trips.

why is my child and her clothes so dirty at pick up?Most days, campers spend their time outside and often in very messy conditions. This is a big part of the summer nature camp experience. Catching that elusive bullfrog at the pond comes withalotofmud.Chancesare, thedirtieryoufindthem, themore fun they had during the day! Please help us embrace this and plan accordingly if you need them presentable on your way home.

Can my child bring electronics or other stuff with them to camp?No-unless it is a comfort item for our youngest campers. Electronics and toys are a disruptive distraction and not allowed at camp. Except for the occasional educational video, we are a screen free environment. If your child carries a cell phone on them, we will enforce limitations while they are here and deem them for emergency use. The Nature Center takes no responsibility for lost items. Any items we do find are put in lost and found until one week after the end of camp.

It is best to pack all items in a two-strap backpack for hiking.

backpack! Sturdy type with wide straps. It’s hard to hike carrying a tote bag.

non-perishable lunchWe DO allow nuts. Keep in mind that campers will be carrying their lunches around. Ice packs can add weight, we recommend sending some frozen items to help keep lunches cool (frozen grapes are a great snack, a serving of yogurt in the freezer overnight, small water bottle that can be the lunch drink.)
