In a referendum on 18th May, 1993, Denmark approved the Maastricht Treaty, which allowed Denmark to join the EU however, with the exceptions in four key areas negotiated in the Edinburgh Agreement, viz. Single currency; Union Citizenship; Common Defence; and Justice & Home Affairs.  In the referendum held in May, 1998, 55.1% voters supported the Amsterdam Treaty thereby paving the way for Denmark’s continued active participation in European cooperation. However, in the referendum held on 28th September 2000 Denmark decided not to join the common currency ‘Euro’. From March 25, 2001, Denmark, along with the other four Nordic countries, joined the group of Schengen countries.
