Denmark Current literature

Mediated intimacies Connectivities, relationalities and proximities Rikke Andreassen, Michael Nebeling, Kathrine Harrison & Tobias Raun (red.), Routledge, 2017, 336 s., ISBN 9781138631861.

Social media, characterized by user-generated content, inter-activity, participation and community formation, have gained much research atten-tion in recent years. At the same time, intimacy, affectiv-ity and emotions are increas-ingly growing as fields of

study. While these two areas are often interwoven, the actual interconnections are rarely studied in detail. This anthology explores how social media construct new types of intimacies, and how prac-tices of intimacy shape the development and use of new media, offering empirical knowledge, the-oretical insights and an international perspective on the flourishing field of digital intimacies.

Science Fiction, Ethics and the Hu-man Condition

Christian Baron, Peter Nicolai Halvorsen & Christine Cornea, Springer International Publishing, 2017, 246 s., ISBN 9783319565750.

This book explores what sci-ence fiction can tell us about the human condition in a technological world, with the ethical dilemmas and conse-quences that this entails. This book is the result of the joint efforts of scholars and scien-tists from various disci-

plines. This interdisciplinary approach sets an ex-ample for those who, like us, have been busy as-sessing the ways in which fictional attempts to fathom the possibilities of science and technology speak to central concerns about what it means to

be human in a contemporary world of technology and which ethical dilemmas it brings along.

Medieret - Frihed og ansvar

Trine Baumbach, Karnov Group, 2017, 592 s., ISBN 9788761939241.

Indefinite Visions

Martine Beugnet, Allan Cameron & Arild Fetveit, Edinburgh University Press, 2017, 384 s., ISBN 9781474407120.

Examines the aesthetics, con-cepts and politics of chaotic and obscured moving images. Audiovisual culture often privileges the instantly identi-fiable: the recognizable face, the well-timed stunt, the per-fectly synchronized line of di-alogue. Yet order and clarity

do not come 'naturally' to the moving image. Light, motion, definition, compression: the condi-tions of recording, storing and screening can sub-ject audiovisual media to countless variations, pulling them towards the indefinite and illegible.

Digitale metoder

Andreas Birkbak & Anders Kristian Munk, Hans Reitzel, 2017, 200 s., ISBN 9788741258218.

Ib Bondebjerg & Ulla Bondebjerg, Sam-fundslitteratur, 2017. 320 s., ISBN 9788759326817.

Transnational European Television Drama Production, Genres and Audiences Ib Bondebjerg, Eva Novrup Redvall, Ras-mus Helles, Signe Sophus Lai, Henrik Søn-dergaard & Cecilie Astrupgaard, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, 336 s., ISBN 9783319628069.

This book deals with the role of television drama in Europe as enabler of transnational, cultural encounters for audi-ences and the creative commu-nity. It demonstrates that the diversity of national cultures is a challenge for European TV drama but also a potential

richness and source of creative variation. Based on data on the production, distribution and recep-tion of recent TV drama from several European countries, the book presents a new picture of the transnational European television culture. The au-thors analyse main tendencies in television policy and challenges for national broadcasters coming from new global streaming services

Web 25 Histories from the first 25 years of the World Wide Web Niels Brügger (red.), Peter Lang, 2017, 257 s., ISBN 9781433132704.

Histories from the First 25 Years of the World Wide Web celebrates the 25th anniver-sary of the Web. Since the be-ginning of the 1990s, the Web has played an important role in the development of the In-ternet as well as in the devel-opment of most societies at

large, from its early grey and blue webpages intro-ducing the hyperlink for a wider public, to today’s multifacted uses of the Web as an integrated part of our daily lives. This is the first book to look

back at 25 years of Web evolution, and it tells some of the histories about how the Web was born and has developed.

The Web as History Using Web Archives to Understand the Past and the Present Niels Brügger & Ralph Schroeder (red.), UCL Press, 2017, 270 s., ISBN 9781911307426.

The World Wide Web has now been in use for more than 20 years. From early browsers to today’s principal source of information, entertainment and much else, the Web is an integral part of our daily lives, to the extent that some people believe ‘if it’s not online, it

doesn’t exist.’ While this statement is not entirely true, it is becoming increasingly accurate, and re-flects the Web’s role as an indispensable treasure trove.

Ældre mennesker i et mediesamfund

Christa Lykke Christensen & Anne Jers-lev, Frydenlund Academic, 2017, 262 s., ISBN 9788771185874.

Counter-Narratives and Organization

Sanne Frandsen, Tim Kuhn & Marianne Wolff Lundholt (red.), Routledge, 2017, 320 s., ISBN 9781138929456.

Counter-Narratives and Or-ganization brings the concept of "counter-narrative" into an organizational context, illumi-nating these complex elements of communication as intrinsic yet largely unexplored aspect of organizational storytelling. The individual chapters focus

on the character of counter-narratives, along with their performative aspects, by addressing ques-tions such as: how do some narratives gain domi-nance over others? How do narratives intersect, relate and reinforce each other? How are organiza-tional members and external stakeholders engaged in the telling and re-telling of the organization?

The Euro Crisis and European Identi-ties Political and Media Discourse in Germany, Ireland and Poland Charlotte Galpin, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, 259 s., ISBN 9783319516103.

This book builds upon our knowledge of the far-reaching economic, political and social effects of the Euro crisis on the European Union by providing a unique study of European identities. In partic-ular, it considers the impact on the construction of European

identities in political and media discourse in Ger-many, Ireland and Poland—three countries with profoundly different experiences of the crisis and never before compared in a single study. Offering an original insight into the dynamics of identity change at moments of upheaval, the author argues that political and media actors in the early stages

of the crisis drew on long-standing identities in or-der to make sense of the crisis in the public sphere.

Helt til grin Moderne audiovisuel komik på tværs af me-dier Andreas Halskov, Henrik Højer & Thomas Larsen Schwartz (red.), VIA Film & Trans-media, 2017, 288 s, ISBN 9788793063693.

"Humour is serious business."

Mixed segmentation Combining audience segmentation, psycho-physiology and textual content analysis. Mixed methodological research of triangula-tion and parallelization in a multivariate de-sign

Allan Grutt Hansen, Anders Bonde & Morten Aagaard, Aalborg Universitetsfor-lag, 2017, 61 s., ISBN 9788771126563.

This book is about using re-cent developments in the fields of data analytics and data visualization to frame new ways of identifying target groups in media communica-tion. Based on a mixed-meth-ods approach, the authors combine psychophysiological

monitoring (galvanic skin response) with textual content analysis and audience segmentation in a single-source perspective. The aim is to explain and understand target groups in relation to, on the one hand, emotional response to commercials or other forms of audio-visual communication and, on the other hand, living preferences and person-ality traits.

Tal! - sammen

Ejvind Hansen, Forlaget Mindspace, 2017, 158 s., ISBN 9788793535169.

FAKE NEWS Når virkeligheden taber Vincent Fella Hendricks & Mads Vester-gaard, Gyldendal, 2017, 176 s., ISBN 9788702247268.

Men hvordan?

Compact Cinematics The Moving Image in the Age of Bit-Sized Media

Pepita Hesselberth & Maria Poulaki, Bloomsbury Academic, 2017, 256 s., ISBN 9781501322266.

Compact Cinematics chal-lenges the dominant under-standing of cinema to focus on the various compact, short, miniature, pocket-sized forms of cinematics that have existed from even before its standardi-zation in theatrical form, and in recent years have multiplied

and proliferated, taking up an increasingly im-portant part of our everyday multimedia environ-ment. Short films or micro-narratives, cinematic pieces or units re-assembled into image archives and looping themes, challenge the concepts that

have traditionally been used to understand cine-matic experience, like linear causality, sequential-ity, and closure, and call attention to complex and modular forms of cinematic expression and per-ception.

Morten Hjelholt & Jannick Schou, Hans Reitzel, 2017, 172 s., ISBN 9788741268125.

Can children’s media be a source of education and em-powerment? Or is the com-mercial media market a threat to their sense of social and democratic values? Such ques-tions about the appropriate-ness of children’s media con-sumption have recurred in

public debates throughout the twentieth cen-tury. From Superman to Social Realism provides an exciting new approach to the study of chil-dren’s media and childhood history, drawing on theories of cross-media consumption and transna-tional history.

Cybersecurity and Privacy - bridging the gap

Samat Khajuria, Lene Tolstrup Sørensen & Knud Erik Skouby (red.), River Publi-shers, 2017, 238 s., ISBN 9788793519664.

The huge potential in future connected services hinges on the precondition that privacy and security needs are dealt with in order for new services to be accepted. This issue is appearing increasingly on the agenda at both the company and individual level. Cyberse-curity and Privacy – Bridging

the Gap addresses two very complex fields of the digital world: cybersecurity and privacy. These multifaceted and multidisciplinary issues are usu-ally understood and valued differently by different individuals, data holders, and legal bodies, but a change in one field immediately affects the others. Policies, frameworks, strategies, laws, tools, tech-niques, and technologies – all of these are tightly interwoven when it comes to security and privacy.

Dialogues on Poetry Mediatization and New Sensibilities Stefan Kjerkegaard & Dan Ringgaard (red.), Aalborg Universitetsforlag, 2017, 370 s., ISBN 9788771126501.

This book’s inquiry into con-temporary poetry takes two di-rections. The first direction leads to several close exami-nations of digital, multi-modal and performative poetry, and how perspectives or perhaps just an awareness of a new media landscape recondition

our understanding of an old literary genre. The second direction expands into considerations of contextual theories of affect and atmosphere, to materiality studies and towards the heterogenic field of politics, for example feminism, minority

studies, digital and environmental humanities or cosmopolitanism. Hence, the question the articles in this volume pose is whether this match of medi-atization and new sensibilities can be seen as a major novel development in the history of poetry.

Music Video After MTV Audiovisual Studies, New Media, and Popular Music Mathias Korsgaard, Routledge, 2017, 228 s., ISBN 9781138670600.

Since the 1980s, music videos have been everywhere, and to-day almost all of the most-viewed clips on YouTube are music videos. However, in ac-ademia, music videos do not currently share this popularity. Music Video After MTV gives music video its due aca-

demic credit by exploring the changing landscapes surrounding post-millennial music video. Across

seven chapters, the book addresses core issues re-lating to the study of music videos, including the history, analysis, and audiovisual aesthetics of music videos. Moreover, the book addresses the recent changes following the digitization of music video, including its changing cycles of production, distribution and reception, the influence of music videos on other media, and the rise of new types of online music video.

Cultural Journalism and Cultural Critique in the Media

Nete Nørgaard Kristensen & Unni From (red.), Routledge, 2017, 182 s., ISBN 9781138234024.

This book addresses a topic in journalism studies that has gained increasing scholarly at-tention since the mid-2000s: the coverage and evaluation of arts and culture, or what we term ‘cultural journalism and cultural critique’. The book highlights three approaches to

this emerging research field: (1) the constant chal-lenge of demarcating what constitutes the ‘cul-tural’ in cultural journalism and cultural critique, and the interlinks of cultural journalism and cul-tural critique; (2) the dialectic of globalization’s cultural homogenization and the specificity of lo-cal/national cultures; and (3) the need to rethink, perhaps even redefine, cultural journalism and cultural critique in view of the digital media land-scape.

Style, Mediation, and Change Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Talking Me-dia Janus Mortensen, Nikolas Coupland & Ja-cob Thøgersen (red.), Oxford University Press, 2017, 266 s., ISBN 9780190629496.

When talk circulates through technological media - through television or radio and through the activities they support, like the dissemina-tion of news, product adver-tising or entertainment - it takes on distinctive character-istics, functions and styles.

The talking media have developed their own ways of styling individuals (often as celebrities of dif-ferent types, but also as 'ordinary people'), and ways of styling relationships (such as constructing informality or trust or authority). Media also style their own ways of communicating (how to read the news, how to conduct interviews, how to en-tertain or educate others, and so on).

Rethinking Journalism Again Societal role and public relevance in a digital age Chris Peters & Marcel Broersma (red.), Routledge, 2017, 234 s., ISBN 9781138860865.

It’s easy to make a rhetorical case for the value of journal-ism. Because, it is a necessary precondition for democracy; it speaks to the people and for the people; it informs citizens and enables them to make ra-tional decisions; it functions as their watchdog on govern-

ment and other powers that be. But does rehashing such familiar rationales bring journalism studies forward? Does it contribute to ongoing discus-sions surrounding journalism’s viability going forth? For all their seeming self-evidence, this book considers what bearing these old platitudes have in the new digital era. It asks whether such hopeful talk really reflects the concrete roles jour-nalism now performs for people in their everyday lives.
