Dennis Jones & Associates New Titles April 2015

TRANSCRIPT

Thank you to all the booksellers who have given us a good January and February; there seems to be so much energy with the books and restocking! Some of the titles that go unheralded are really pitching in with sales successes. One such book is The Great Big Book of Aussie Inventions 9781921526206, and with another double page spread coming up, this time in the Brisbane Courier Mail. It is great to see the books go into reprint within 6 months of publication (and it also stops feeding the remainder front tables) . Speaking of reprints there are another 4000 copies of Weed Foragers Handbook 9781864471212 due mid April – this takes it to 15000 copies in print. An update on the next Secret Girls' Business book - now looks like May this year. The third in the Our House in Not in Paris franchise is being converted to eBook as I write with its print edition not yet scheduled – I guess my preference would be to hold it over to October as we have missed the big build up to Mothers Day. The first two sell equally as eBooks – probable that eBook sales will exceed print sales by midyear – more potential consumers. We will have the new Ber Carroll for Mothers Day – she has revealed the jacket image on her Facebook page. Susannah de Vries next book will be with us in April – A Royal Love Triangle – a juicy book about the Diana, Camilla & Charles story. It is current on the subject of Royal tact to the last few weeks and is currently being edited. Susannah assures us the media will be all over it – including Philip Adams on LNL! Our biggest seller over the last few months has been Daring & Disruptive – we are heading toward 4000 copies of the print & eBook editions – good news is we are to be stocking the D&D Play book and shortly the D&D 2016 Diary will be on the new title order forms.

The cycle of closures still worries me. This week we see a bookseller in Byron Bay closing and last week one in Wangaratta going. In the last financial year we lost between 40 and 50 bookshops, I don’t mitigate with the amount of new stores as there were not 40 to 50 new openings. Where do people go to buy their books? And then the log jam for the buyers in the existing shops of books being offered. Given that our print sales through bookshops has increased I assume those stalwarts will reap benefits going forward.

Old book trade people rarely steer too much away from the business; in the last week we have been offered two books created by a business called “Lothian Custom Publishing”. Yes it is the business of Peter Lothian and John Ross. One of the books offered to us also has a claim to have been influenced by Robert Sessions. I hope we win the books as they are very high quality and on subjects to make booksellers pockets swell. And to have books with that fine pedigree.

I noticed recently that one of the RIPs was one Margaret Bloy Graham of Harry the Dirty Dog fame. I used to sell these as part of the range of The Bodley Head children’s books when I started. The Bodley Head had an outstanding range of authors and illustrators and that collection was curated by Judy Taylor – she was Maurice Sendak’s “Commonwealth publisher”. The passing of Colleen McCullough also brought memories of when Harper & Row released her hardback The Thorn Birds, it was one of the biggest book releases in Australia of a book with deckle edges; I was working with Collins Publishers at the time and Collins-Forlib was the mass market distributor for the book – they had many complaints from resellers about those deckle edged books being misbound. It also marked the cringe of having to break Australian authors overseas before the local market would deem the work saleable. In the 1990’s I was on Norfolk Island on vacation and thought it would be fun to catch up with her – I knew she lived on the island and would be likely to go to restaurants to dine; took us every night and a different restaurant, but – it was the last night I eventually found her and introduced myself. Can I also say I was pleased to read the words from Selwa Anthony in the Sydney Morning Herald about Colleen. We just forget that there was a day when there no online vendors, no eBooks, and no door to door air freight schemes. Thank you Selwa.

I would also like to just say a word about staff changes and that people do come and they do go!We recently had two people leave in a period of three months – that is what happens in work places. Two people who celebrate work anniversaries with us this month are Jenny Kemp who commenced in 2007 and Sonia Mitchell in 2006 – thank you!

I got a smile out of reading some of the notes on Shelf Awareness of the plight of the US booksellers having to face paying hourly wages of US$11.00 per hour; and then I am sure they do not have the on costs and onerous reporting that we have over here. And the governments talk about reducing red tape? Whilst on the soapbox – what about those 100 voters at the spill in Canberra the other day? – if the spill was successful and another leader toppled which members were going to pay the redundancy costs for an ex Prime Minister? Might be different if those members were each individually responsible to fund those redundancy costs – like in the real world.

Solid selling.Thank youDJ

Words From The Wise

April 2015 New Title Releases

These poems draw on works of history and private testimonial. They are what this age needs: poems about war which do not glorify war; poems which, for all their considerable rhetorical power, nowhere distance themselves from pain, brutality and callous error. Very few collections bring home so powerfully the vulnerability of individuals in the face of history. This collection certainly takes its place among Robyn Rowland’s best work. It is a courageous achievement. - Lisa Gorton, Poetry editor, Australian Book Review

Dr Robyn Rowland’s poems are intensely felt and expressed. With an epic perspective and powerful emotionality, she has created a lasting and moving saga of the Anzac and Turkish warriors in conflict, as well as in intimate comradeship. Her perceptive sensitivity creates a vivid and enduring picture of the agonies, sufferings, and heroic acts that characterize the human tragedy of Gallipoli. In translating impeccably these poems into Turkish, Professor M.Ali Çelikel has commendably conveyed the epic depth and literary qualities embodied in the poems. - Professor Himmet Umunç Ph.D. Başkent University, President, English Language and Literature Research Association of Turkey.

About the AuthorDr Robyn Rowland AO has twelve books, nine of poetry. Seasons of doubt & burning. New & Selected Poems (Five Islands Press, Melbourne, 2010) represented 40 years of work. Her poetry appears in national and international journals and in thirty-six anthologies, including six Best Australian Poems: 2014, 2013, 2010, 2009, 2005 and 2004 (Black Inc), with editors Les Murray, Robert Adamson, Lisa Gorton and Geoff Page.Robyn’s work has been awarded a number of prizes and she has published and read her work in Australia, Ireland, Japan, Bosnia, Serbia, Austria, Turkey, Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand, Portugal, the UK, the USA, Greece and Italy. Her poetry has been featured on Australian and Irish national radio programs. Robyn has two CDs, Off the tongue and Silver Leaving - Poems & Harp. Irish-Australian, she lives half-time in Connemara, Ireland. Previously Professor of Social Inquiry and Women’s Studies at Deakin University, she retired in 1996, when she was also made an Officer in the Order of Australia for her contribution to higher education and women’s health.Robyn received an Established Writer’s Literature Board grant to complete research and write poems on Turkey. She is an Honorary Fellow, School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, Australia; was a member of the National Advisory Council for Australia Poetry Ltd 2010-2013; curated and presented the Poetry & Conversation Series for the Geelong Library Corporation, 2010-2013; and was inaugural Deputy Chair of the Board of the Australian Poetry Centre 2007-2009.

April 2015 New Title Releases Panthers & the Museum of Fire

Panthers & the Museum of Fire is a novella about walking, memory and writing. The narrator walks from Glebe to a  central Sydney café to return a manuscript by a recently‐dead writer. While she walks, the reader enters the narrator’s entire world: life with family and neighbours, narrow misses with cars, her singular friendships, dinner conversations and work. We learn of her adolescent desire for maturity and acceptance through a brush with religion, her anorexia, the exercise of that power when she was powerless in every other aspect of her life.

‘It is not too much of a stretch to compare Jen Craig’s work with the otherwise incomparable WG Sebald.’ - DEBRA ADELAIDE‘… the reader is made aware at once that Craig is a writer of great skill.’ KERRYN GOLDSWORTHY

Jen Craig’s short stories have appeared in various Australian literary magazines. She collaborated with composers of the chamber opera, A Dictionary of Maladies, in Switzerland in 2005.

5 Star ReviewThe year 2015 is only in its early days, but already I know that Sydney writer Jen Craig’s novella, Panthers & the Museum of Fire, will be among my top reads for the year. Bold, original and urgent, Panthers is told in a modernist, stream-of-consciousness style by a narrator who is either literally the author, Jen Craig, or a projection constructed for the purposes of the text—something like James Joyce’s Stephen Dedalus in a contemporary Ulysses. Craig blurs memoir and fiction as the reader follows Jen, walking from Glebe to Surry Hills to return a manuscript to a deceased friend’s relations. On the way, Jen reflects on the text, crediting it with invigorating her sagging enthusiasm for her writing career. As she reflects, however, she also undertakes an excavation of her own psyche, her past and its implications for her future. Panthers is a complex work of fictionalised-memoir in the style of writers such as Karl Ove Knausgaard and Sheila Heti. Fans of Joyce and Virginia Woolf may also be interested, as will many writers, I think. It is an experimental novella but surprisingly easy to read, and brilliant for the very ordinariness of its subject, the everyday reflections of a very human mind throughout the progress of a day. - Angie Andrewes is a bookseller and reviewer

Here Be Dragons

Dennis Greene's poetry is meditative, wry and questing, with surprising eruptions of strangeness. It is built deftly and surely, grounded in subtleties and nuances of crafting and structuring; individual poems gather together as a greater tonal architecture. Literary shades such as Yeats, Wilfred Owen and Blake provide points of engagement or departure; as do figures like Magellan, Churchill, Darwin. Shakespeare murmurs ever-present in the wings.

With curiosity and insistency Greene finds poems hidden in the light and shade of the everyday - in husband and father-hood, domesticity, the West Australian landscape. With quirky narratives both mythic and quotidian, moving discoveries, messages in bottles, he might be one of the explorers he writes about, returned but taking us via tellings and re-tellings to the edge of the mapped, the known, for shiver-and-goosebump glimpses of 'dragons'.

"These poems speak immediately: a calm and thoughtful voice grows through their images and observations. They get into the reader by a stealth that is wonderfully devious, extremely likeable and not by special effects or dramas. They are also expansions of quiet humour, long and deeply engaging echoes of 'being'." - Philip Salom

"Dennis Greene asks us to look again at what we already know. This poet's hand, in language tempered by humility, holds time aside, waits for the mystery to come forward from its shadow, and meticulously records its impressions. Greene is a giving poet. He offers us a 'world through unfocused eyes' and shows us how to look again." - Morgan Yasbincek

Dennis Greene was born in England in 1949, but was raised in what is now Zimbabwe. He travelled extensively before settling in Western Australia in 1983. He has been, at various times (and among other things) a soldier, a busker, a salesman, a meteorological observer, and was working in retail store management when diagnosed, in 1987 at the age of 37, with young onset Parkinson's disease. He has performed his work at poetry readings and on television and radio; it has been published in journals and anthologies in Australia and the US, and extensively online. He is married with two adult daughters.

April 2015 New Title Releases mum, i wish i was dead

Adam Schwartz has spent more than a third of his life battling depression. At the age of 10, he began periods of school refusal, bouts of destruction, physical illness, endless trials with unsuccessful drug regimes and contemplation of suicide. Finally, he was forced to drop out of high school and relinquish his hopes of further education and a bright, healthy future.Fortunately, Adam’s story has a happy ending. As someone who has only just left those terrible years behind, his recollections of what it is like to be a child and teenager suffering with depression are vivid.mum, i wish i was dead tells the story of Adam’s journey through this illness and was written to help raise awareness  of depression and give hope to both carers and sufferers.For more information, go to www.adamschwartz.com.au

Depression and related forms of mental ill-health plague at least half of young people as they face the challenges and ordeals of the transition from childhood to adulthood. They struggle with the ‘hero’s journey’. This book not only describes one such journey with great honesty and sensitivity, it also provides hope and proof of how to navigate the route. It could be a useful guide to the next generation who pass this way. - Professor Pat McGorry, AO University of Melbourne. Executive Director, Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health.

This is a brave, candid and beautifully written description of the effect of depression that will be of enormous educational value for sufferers, their family and health professionals. The book also serves to provide much-needed hope that, with appropriate treatment and support, the outcome can be very positive. - Professor Garry Walter AM Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Sydney

April 2015 New Title Releases Robbed of Every Blessing

Ireland, early 1800s. The Napoleonic Wars have ended, leaving an already disjointed country in peril. Maurice O'Dwyer, a young Irishman, considers the lifeless body of an English tithe‐collector slain under a rain‐filled sky. From that moment it seems his fate is sealed: he and his young simpleton brother, Padraig, are exiled to Australia, An Astráil, to the convict‐filled island of Van Diemen's Land ‐ leaving behind his love, his land, and his liberty. However, in  the bush Maurice discovers that there are allies in the most unlikely of places.

About the authorJohn A. Tully is descended from English and Irish forebears. A Tasmanian expatriate, a socialist and an active trade unionist, he worked as a rigger in construction and heavy industry for many years. He currently lectures in Politics and History at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of six published books, a number of articles, book reviews and short stories. His previous book, Dark Clouds on the Mountain, also set in Tasmania, was published by Hybrid Publishers in 2010.

With the passion of an activist and the ear of a poet, John Tully constructs his novel out of the differing perspectives of the colonial project, weaving Irish lives and English lives, black experiences and white experiences into a dense tapestry of oppression and the many little resistances it fostered. This is an account of settlement in all its complexity, a multilayered book written with a deep sympathy for ordinary people coping with the collision of very different worlds. It's a text built from parallels, echoes and resonances, a much-needed excavation of a past that still haunts us. - Jeff Sparrow, co-author of Radical Melbourne: A Secret History

Dark Clouds on the Mountain Set in wintry Tasmania in the early 1990s, with flashbacks to post‐war Hobart and Europe during World War II, this story deals with dark secrets, crime and Nazi plots, interwoven with familiar domestic tensions of family life and marriage. Tully creates a fictional world strongly embedded in authentic details of real locations and well‐conceived characters.

The earthy, passionate main protagonist, Jack Martin, is richly drawn: 'A typical copper ‐ detective anyway ‐stressed out most of the time, running on adrenaline, nicotine and coffee. Booze too, but not as much as some of his mates. Running to flab from a diet of meat pipes and sauce, chips and the deep‐fried dog's turds they called chicken rolls, gobbled down on the run between cases, ingesting cumulatively lethal doses of salt, sugar and saturated fats.'

Larapinta TrailThis 2nd edition is the same size and format as the first edition. Notes have been updated and include details such as the new huts and changed food drop facilities. In recent years John and Monica have also completed a number of off-track walks in the area and decided to not add these into the guide as it would have made the book heavier and would not be of relevance to most Larapinta walkers. Instead they will eventually publish those notes on-line through this website. The Larapinta Trail guide has 160 pages, 121 colour photographs, 20 topographic maps.A detailed on-line review of the first edition of the book is available at the aushiker website. This is an all colour production with full track notes for both directions along the trail. Walking the OtwaysThis is the first edition published by John Chapman. Overall it is the 4th edition -the previous 3 editions were published by the Geelong Walking Club in 1986, 1996 and 2001. The new edition has 184 pages, colour photographs, colour topographic maps. This book has been redesigned to fit into the style used in our range of books. New maps have been redrawn, reorganised and expanded. The introduction and notes have been expanded and many more photographs have been included. While John and Monica have walked many of the tracks, they have not walked everything and resposibility for the accuracy of the notes rests with the Geelong Walking Club. The walks have also been altered. Some were deleted due to tracks overgrowing or issues with access while some new walks have been added.

Sculptures of Melbourne Sculptures of Melbourne explores major changesin the nature of public sculpture. When Melbourne was established, sculpture was heavily influenced by the colonial  legacy of neo‐classical bronze and marble statues.  From 1980 onwards, public sculpture changed dramatically, not only in style but in materials, location and sheer numbers. This book tells the story of how the shifting trends in public sculpture moved from a classical style, to commemorative, to a corporate modernist style, to being integrated into urban design, and finally evolving into a contemporary style, which is non-traditional and temporary. The history includes controversial modernist sculptures such as ‘The Yellow Peril’ and unofficial laneway installation works. The book is written in an easy accessible style and is also a pictorial essay of Melbourne’s sculptures.

Mark S. Holsworth is a writer, art critic and artist who lives in Melbourne. He has written plays, short stories and authors a long-running blog: Black Mark – Melbourne Art & Culture Critic. April 2015 New Title Releases Let My People Go

This story chronicles a largely unknown but important aspect of 20th century Australian political history during the Cold War, when the Communist leadership closed down many Jewish organisations and declared Zionism an ideological enemy. Soviet Jews often suffered hardships, not being allowed to enlist in universities, work in certain professions or participate in government. For three critical decades, 1959‐89, Australian Jews and their community leaders were deeply involved in the international Soviet Jewry movement, with distinctive contribution to international affairs by some leading Australians including Bob Hawke, Garfield Barwick and Malcolm Fraser. By any measure, Australia played a role above and beyond what might be expected from a middle‐ranking nation with limited international influence.But the lead actor was Isi Leibler, and this is very much also his story. Widely recognised and honoured internationally, his involvement and leadership ‐ his 'magnificent obsession' ‐ with the refuseniks and Soviet Jews, merit a full account.The emigration of over a million Jews to Israel, after an international campaign lasting more than three decades, redefined the notion of human rights. Indeed, Natan Sharansky, the leading 'Prisoner of Zion', claims it as the 20th century's most successful human rights movement.

In 1967 Peter Evans left his regular job as a maths and science teacher at Eltham High School and set off to see the world. Undaunted by inexperience, the next part of his life involved barging around Europe waterways, where he began what has now become an important tourist industry. It is on these exclusive barge tours that we meet the rich and famous, Wallaby the barge dog, an adopted duck. The illustrious Napolean and an endlessly delicious array of vignettes that take you back to a more relaxed pace and era.Peter's recollections of iconic characters and their antics are injected with irreverent humour drawn from memories of his childhood in the Australian bush. The anecdotes are brought to life in a series of hilarious cartoons by artist Paul Woolfenden, depicting rural life. After many years on the European waterways, Peter and his wife Carol built a 17 metre sailing vessel, the Evanna, and their lively tales span 80,000 nautical miles at the sea from Indonesia to the Arctic Circle and Greenland to Cuba. The armchair traveller will delight in delving into stories of dangerous encounters on the Evanna - from unsavoury pirates to corrupt officials - on their intrepid discovery tours to wild and exotic places. This book captures the extraordinary adventures of an enterprising Australian who had the courage to follow his bliss and live the kind of life we all secretly wish for.

This is the remarkable story of the Swiss born Nazi spy, Annette Wagner. Her two years in Australia was immersed  in intrigue and shielded by a skilfully managed façade of deception. Tracked by Military Intelligence, her outstanding credentials in espionage ensured that exposing her ultimate role would never be easy.Less than 4 months after arriving in Australia in 1938, she acquired espionage's greatest communication asset ‐broadcasting her own programs on public radio to nationwide audiences ‐ a secure channel for transmitting coded  messages.This is a captivating narrative from within the global Nazi intelligence machine on the eve of World War ll. It includes the link with Japanese espionage in Australia during the late 1930s and presents new evidence in the continuing debate on The Battle for Australia.Overlooked in the National Archives for nearly seventy years, the story of the broadcasting spy may now be told.

About the AuthorGreg Clancy’s long-term interest has been in the study of the people, history, culture and economics of Southeast Asia, and from this has evolved the basis for his writings. His first book, A Dictionary of Indonesian History since 1900 is believed to be the only book in Australia to be sold to students from primary school through to university.Greg’s other books include studies on multiculturalism, a social analysis of the Asian financial crisis in 1997, and two publications on people smuggling in Asia – one non-fiction and the other, fictional.Unlike his other books, Hitler’s Lost Spy is the result of an historical accident. The principal character may have permanently slipped through the trawling net of researchers but for a casual comment from Greg’s father more than five decades earlier. Hitler’s Lost Spy is the true story of a Nazi spy in Australia with a background sense of 1950s Hollywood fiction, ensuring that the lady spy will now take her place as a unique participant in the story of Australia in World War II.

In the Lap of the Gods

Ex Fleet Air Arm helicopter pilot Nick Evans didn't enjoy his childhood much, and service in the sectarian madness of Ulster later brought it all back. Nick chose to take his chances in a burgeoning exploratory business instead, and ends up in Iran flying for an American company not long after the shah's departure to Egypt. But in‐country relationships continue to deteriorate, and Nick is further perplexed when an Iranian naval friend from his Dartmouth days asks to be helped to disappear. Nick aids his friend, but this is then further complicated by his friend admitting to an estranged sister, who was working at the US Embassy when it was sacked. As the situation deteriorates further, Nick realises that not just his friend, but also he, is in danger now. Getting out of  the country is not going to be easy.

About the AuthorI joined a British Navy engineering school at just over 15 by common entrance exam, as I was too young to have matriculated, graduating as an air electrical artificer engineer some five years later. I led maintenance/repair teams and was in combat on a Frigate helicopter flight during Indonesian confrontation at this time, and also flew as part of my duties. When I returned to the UK I took a few more, purely academic subjects, and went into selection to join Dartmouth as a helicopter pilot. Over the next several years I qualified as a pilot, then a flying instructor, eventually becoming a Central Flying School 'A' Category instructor. On that tour I was XO and training Officer on the RAN Fleet Air Arms search and rescue squadron. I taught a lot of that and recovered quite a number of lost people and unfortunately a number who didn't make it. I was extended to a three year tour at Nowra, and when I returned to the RN's main helicopter training squadron applied to transfer to the Australian Navy. I transferred to the RAN in late 1980, and served another 12 years with the RAN. In that time I was on the Director of Naval Safety's staff as the aviation expert, and later as DON's for a time. After that my last operational job was as XO of Target Services Group at Jervis bay, and also the CO later. After I went to Canberra again as a project manager. In mid 1991 (Desert Storm time) I suffered a head injury ( hefty bleed) and was medically discharged in a wheel chair some six months later. It was catagorised as service related obviously, but as I'd signed some documentation prior to that I suggest that it is played down. The point of that is I had to sell up a sheep and cattle farm (about 600 and 24 Resp:) I'd built up for my retirement, and subsequently moved to Merimbula. I did get mobile again eventually however, and did about 8 years as the SES area and Bega unit controller (unpaid of course). I also completed a graduate diploma in Psychology and Counseling in this time, but although a member of the Australian Counseling Association, didn't set up a practice per se. I was a Rotarian for 12 years and have been a Lion for 24 years through-out that time however, including 3 times as president, and have been asked to use those skills pro bono a number of times in that environment. This is my first exercise in writing fiction, but a lot is based on fact, and I have used much of my knowledge to enhance the roll of the females involved as today's thinking dictates. I've written another story that is close to final editing and have another half written as well, but will see how "Lap of the Gods" goes. I suggest you edit this as you see fit Janet. I'm churning them out before I'm too bloody old to remember it all.

Watch as the sands take shape…A desert wind whispers of memory and regretAn army marches high in the golden skiesA traveller grows tired of seeing the end of the worldA man no longer wants to be humanA people run eternally from the rising sun

In this evocative collection of short fiction Dirk Strasser shapes eighteen stories suffused by the sands of loss, understanding and redemption.

“…Strasser is a master of the form…” – Jack Dann, author of The Memory Cathedral

“Dirk Strasser is a master practitioner of what is, to my mind, the perfect form – the short story. This complex and intelligent collection showcases his long‐honed subtlety and control, offering such gems as the haunting and delicately structured Waiting for the Rain, and the incisive Watching the Soldiers. Like all the brightest stories, these leave an indelible after‐image in the minds’ eye, through which you must ever after view the mundane world.” ‐‐ Isobelle  Carmody, author of The Kingdom of the Lost and The Obernewtyn Chronicles

The Rut Race is a state of mind, which we can slip in and out of at any time. The trick is to recognise when you are in it and know how to get out.

Phil was stuck in the Rut Race for a long time and found a way out. He has written this book with the intention for it to be an inspiration, motivation and a guide to anyone who wants to radically transform their life from one that they don't like to one that they love.

In How to Get Out of The Rut Race, Phil has put together some innovative, powerful and yet simple ideas that anyone can use to get out of a rut. Using these concepts, people can discover what they want in life and how they can quickly and responsibly create and start living a life they truly love.

Phil considered himself a very average achiever, so he firmly believes if he can make this type of change to his life at a mature age, anyone can. This book is about how he did it and more importantly it shows you how you can do it too.

Discover why most people don't achieve their goals. Find out how to achieve all your goals using the Five Stage Guide to Success. Phil Schibeci shows the reader how to take control of their lives, reconnect with their passion and create the life of their dreams.

Read this book if you are ready to finally take charge of your life and start living it the way you've always dreamed of.

Resisting the Enemy follows the story of Valentine de Vaillant - known as Valli - from a twelve-year-old schoolgirl in Australia to a young woman living in German Occupied France.

From the moment Valli joins a Resistance Group, she engages in a series of clandestine activities that at any moment could lead to arrest by the dreaded Gestapo. When a German Army officer is billeted at her grand-mother's villa, Valli's world is thrown into turmoil. How can she possibly reconcile her growing attraction to a German - a member of a brutal and oppressive regime - with her life as a French patriot and resistant?

Resisting the Enemy is a thrilling story of conflict, danger and passion. A love between enemies that seems impossibly doomed. It moves from the beaches of Australia, to the boulevards of pre-war Paris, through the German invasion and the dark years of the Occupation. It is also about music and opera, the enduring bonds of friendship, and one young woman's fight to resist oppression, no matter what the odds.

Into The Storm's Domain

Across The Stonewind Sky Book One

Jilted at the altar and stubbornly British about it, Rodney Hoverrim embarks on the adventure of a lifetime - following his nation's bravest (and most foolish) into the 'Storm's Domain'.

But his airship adventure is barely under way before he is hijacked, and they in turn are attacked by sky pirates; twice! Now captive of the very vile villainess The Black Bitch, Rod must fight for his life as her fetid airship plummets towards the skyland of Vicaria - lair of its mad (and possibly evil) ruler Victor Vicario; well known for injecting his visitors with his latest concoctions.

Out of the frying pan but not yet in Victor's clutches, Rod must desperately deduce who his true allies are before it is too late - only to discover that Vicaria hides a veritable shipload of secrets, and seductive women!

April 2015 New Title Releases Lily and the Magic Wall

It’s Lily the dog’s birthday, and also the day of her highly anticipated birthday party. While out on a walk before her party, she discovers a magic wall that leads her to a cave with six differently shaped doors. What exciting surprises are behind these mysterious doors? And will Lily make it back home in time for her birthday party?

About the Author: Stefanie Godinho lives in Manly, on Sydney’s northern beaches, with her husband. From an early age, Stefanie has enjoyed creative writing. Her greatest passions are children and animals, and making sure they are nurtured and loved. She also loves cooking and old music. Her biggest inspirations are her family and, of course, her beloved dog, Lily.

About the Illustrator Grace Chen is a young illustrator and student residing in Sydney. Her days are spent working at ‘If U Like ART’ studio in Brookvale, studying Media Arts at UNSW Art and Design, and spending time with her friends. She favours using colourful mediums such as acrylics, watercolours, digital media and colour pencils, to create soft, yet lively illustrations. She hopes to continue improving her art, and own a cat or two in the future.

About Lily Lilywhite, aka Lily, was born on a farm in Taree, NSW and named after a song by 1970s singer, Cat Stevens. Lily is a West Highland Terrier and is very proud of her Scottish heritage. She loves nothing more than her toy polar bear and wearing her red tartan pyjamas. A very keen hole‐digger, she also enjoys chasing birds, watching TV and rolling in grass.

April 2015 New Title Releases John Simpson Kirkpatrick

John Simpson, aka John Kirkpatrick, aka the Man with the Donkey, was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign, though he never fired a shot in anger. He was an Englishman, yet he was typical of the young Australians who set out on a great adventure in 1915 ... and never came back. He was a larrikin, didn't like bosses and never had a permanent job. But when the going got tough, he was the sort of bloke you would like to have beside you.

About the AuthorClaudia started making kids books after becoming a parent and the first book, The Very Hungry Bum, was the idea of her partner. He might have suggested it after hearing Claudia complain about the poor quality of her underpants elastic one too many times. But Claudia thought it was a great idea so she embarked on the production of the first book a bit like Mr. Magoo taking a Sunday stroll and ending up at Everest base-camp – blissfully ignorant.Since then Claudia has become known by her local bookshop as “the lady with the very hungry bum!”

Prior to parenthood, Claudia worked as an independent documentary-maker and freelance TV editor. Most of her proposals never got funded but she did get to make a few things for the ABC, SBS and for Warlpiri Media (now PAW Media) in Yuendumu, Northern Territory. These included the first series of race around the world (ABC), Halal Mate (SBS), Arrkantele (Warlpiri Media) and Mangarri Panu (Warlpiri Media).

Claudia loved living and working in Aboriginal communities - ''There are so many great places, strong people and amazing stories that you don’t really know about until you’re there, in the midst of them.''
