COSATU 11th National Congress DENOSA an affiliate of the Confederation of the South African Trade Unions
(COSATU) attended the COSATU 11th National Congress of 17-20 September
2012
The Congress declared: We are not prepared to tolerate massive levels of
unemployment! We want labour brokers banned now! We will not accept
widespread poverty! We cannot live with grotesque levels of inequality which
have made us the most unequal society on the planet.
Workers pledged to embark on a united and radical programme of action that
will be based on the following four pillars:
Abolish the apartheid wage structure: forward to a living wage
Radical socio-economic transformation: the people shall share in the
country s wealth
Build strong worker-controlled unions: organise or starve
Creating our own lula moment: driving the second phase of our transition

DENOSA hands over soccer kit
Soccer Kit for the Non Communicable Diseases Project,
North West Province
As part of the ongoing Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) Prevention and
Wellness Project in the North West province DENOSA handed over a soccer kit
that included shorts, jerseys balls, whistles and more to the community of
Barolong boora Tshidi in Montshioa Village near Mahikeng.
The main aim of the NCD project is to assist nurses working within the public
health sector to focus on their health wellness as well as to support a select
community within the North West province to do the same. The project further
aims to promote health and wellness in those diagnosed or at risk of developing
NCD within the target nurse population and community.

Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council, Building
Bridges: Commonwealth Young Women’s Fellowship
DENOSA Leaner Movement Deputy Chairperson, Mmathebe Serebane
represented South African young women at this week-long fellowship
project. The project was a contribution to the Commonwealth theme of
Women as Agents of Change, and a special Commonwealth youth initiative
during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
The fellowship aimed at enhancing the leadership and inter-cultural skills of
young women emerging leaders from women's and youth civil society
organisations and Commonwealth Associations. It provided a springboard
for participants to develop and action an advocacy agenda on behalf of other
young women in the Commonwealth. The fellowship included roundtable
discussions with policy makers, Rhodes scholars from the Oxford
University, parliamentarians and leading business women in the United
Kingdom. Affording this young woman with an opportunity to develop her
leadership and advocacy skills in an international context, will equip her to
serve as an agent of change in the organization.
DENOSA Profiling South African Nurses
An opportunity to share the work that has been done by South African
nurses arose when DENOSA was invited to address the international
community. General Secretary, Thembeka Gwagwa delivered a presentation
on the NCD Project during the National Nurses Association (NNA) Leaders
and the Triad Meeting in Geneva in May 2012
End September 2012, President, Dorothy Matebeni, was a guest speaker at
the Innovation for Global Health Conference organized by the Norwegian
Medical Association. Dorothy Matebeni gave a presentation on the
significance of collaborations within the health sector and shared DENOSA
projects carried out in collaboration with other partners.
African Health Professions Regulatory Collaborative
(ARC)
On 19 September 2012, DENOSA hosted more than six (6) countries from the
East, Central and Southern Africa (ECSA) region attending the recent African
Health Professions Regulatory Collaborative (ARC) meeting in Pretoria 18-20
September 2012. The countries participating in the ARC requested to visit
DENOSA and in the process learn more about the running of the organization.
General Secretary, Thembeka Gwagwa, gave a presentation on the relationship
between a professional nursing association and a trade union. The advantages
and challenges DENOSA comes across as an organization with both legs.

4 Safety Workshop
Through the DPI Commonwealth Nurses Federation (CNF) was invited to run a
workshop on 4 Safety. CNF Executive Secretary, Jill ILIFFE, facilitate the 4
Safety workshop at DENOSA Head Office in June 2012. The workshop
attended by 30 participants, 3 from each province and 3 from the National office
was divided into four segments: a safe patient; a safe workplace; a safe
profession; and a safe nurse. The principle underlying the workshop is that
patient safety is the number one priority for nurses, however to achieve patient
safety it is necessary to have a safe workplace, a safe profession and be a safe
nurse.
