Improving oral health for Oregon’s children

From the Board

The Dental Foundation of Oregon (DFO) supported eight statewide non-profit dental programs during the year which helped provide thousands of children with free dental services. We advocated for important oral health initiatives including the campaign to implement community water fluoridation in the City of Portland, and we provided free dental care and oral health education to thousands of low-income children during week-long visits at schools on the Tooth Taxi.

All this work was made possible because of our dedicated staff, hundreds of dental professionals and community volunteers, and because of generous partners and donors like you.

The DFO was founded by the Oregon Dental Association in 1983, and since its inception it has given over one million dollars to support free dental care for the underserved.

In just over four years, the Tooth Taxi has served over 12,000 low-income children at over 200 schools/sites across Oregon and delivered over $3,500,000 in donated dental care.

Though we are proud of these accomplishments, we remain sobered by the knowledge that nearly 200,000 Oregon children still live in poverty and have among the worst dental decay in America.

We remain committed to improving oral health for Oregon’s children, and we thank you for helping us deliver these critical services to our most vulnerable population.

Education, Prevention, Treatment, ResultsThe Tooth Taxi is breaking the cycle of poor oral health, eliminating dental pain, delivering important oral health services, and providing the knowledge and tools children need to stay healthy for a lifetime.

In 2012, we took our services directly to our most underserved children, travelling throughout Oregon to communities where access is a challenge. We made thousands of healthy smiles with the help of our incredible staff and volunteer dental professionals, community members, educators and many generous and caring donors.

A father came by the Tooth Taxi to pick up his children after school. His daughter was being treated and his son—her little brother—was waiting, his treatment finished. His son lit up when Dad came in, he gave him a tour of the Tooth Taxi showing him how the chair works, the button for the x-rays, the cartoons playing on the ceiling. It was delightful to watch. Dad thanked us for what we were doing; he doesn’t have any teeth, he tells his kids how important it is to brush so they don’t end up like him.

A school janitor told us her granddaughter was so excited about the Tooth Taxi visit; her granddaughter kept telling her about all she learned and was so excited about her oral hygiene kit. She lives near the school and everyday she’d look to see if the Tooth Taxi was still there. Grandma said: “Thank you very much.”

Imagine being a 15 year old girl with front teeth so decayed they have holes, and are black in color. We met this young lady who had had negative dental experiences in the past. After discussing the state of her oral health with her mom, she made the commitment to bring her daughter daily for appointments. Our patient was a bit apprehensive but committed to the appointments. One day her father who had no teeth brought her for her appointment. Her dad had lost all his teeth when he was in his twenties. Treatment and education showed our patient that

there are ways to improve oral health by taking care of cavities and ways to prevent decay. Armed with this information and treatment success she has an opportunity to break the family cycle of losing teeth at a young age. With her front teeth restored, she was so excited with her new smile, she was going to wait to show her friends and surprise them when school started. On her last visit to the Tooth Taxi, she brought a thank you note in for Dr. Moffitt and exclaimed, “I’m ready for high school now! I’ve been smiling nonstop!”

One patient left class and returned to the Tooth Taxi shortly after his appointment simply to tell Dr. Moffitt, “What you did was awesome!” He stopped by again just to say hello, and again at the end of the day to introduce his mom.

A first grade teacher asked: “Who can I write to, to thank for all this work? I just like that these kids get services. I want to write and say, don’t stop what you’re doing! It’s really great.”

The results of a Tooth Taxi visit benefit both students and school employees; students relieved from dental pain are more focused and ready to learn. The relationship between poor oral health, absenteeism and low grades has been documented in studies* showing that children who reported dental pain missed more school than healthy students (and their parents missed more work), and they were four times more likely to have a lower grade point average. The Tooth Taxi will keep rolling to fulfill our mission “Improving oral health for Oregon’s children.” With education, prevention and treatment, children are learning the value of good oral health and they are sharing this information with their families, helping to break the cycle of poor oral health.
