Welcome to Salt Lake Community College Dental Hygiene Clinic Welcome! This handbook has been created to help prepare you for your Clinical and Local Anesthesia Board Examinations hosted at Salt Lake Community College. It is our goal is to make sure that all candidates have a fair, secure, quiet, safe, effective, and positive examination experience. Upon arrival please go to the SLCC dental hygiene reception area, room HTC 133, to be assigned to a tour group. A tour of the clinic will be provided to familiarize candidates with the clinic set-up prior to orientation. Candidate Orientation will be held in room HTC123 prior to the examination. The Salt Lake Community College Dental Hygiene Facility is located at the Jordan Campus 3491 West Wight’s Fort Road (SE corner of Bangerter Highway and 9000 South) and housed in the High Technology Center (HTC) Building, room 133. 1. Airline and Airport Information:

Salt Lake International Airport serves the Salt Lake City area. Most major carriers fly to Salt Lake International Airport.

Driving directions to Salt Lake Community College Dental Hygiene Clinic: Exit Salt Lake International Airport going directly south onto Bangerter Highway. Travel south approximately 11 miles to 9000 South Street. Turn left (east) onto 9000 South. Proceed approximately one block to first traffic light & turn right onto 3400 west Wights Fort Road which is the SLCC Jordan Campus Entrance (see pg. 9 for area map/detailed directions)

Dental Hygiene Facility and Services

1. Building and Access Hours • The Dental Hygiene Clinic is housed in the High Tech Learning Center Building (HTC) &

will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the WREB Clinical and Local Anesthesia Examinations, unless otherwise requested by the WREB examiners.

2. Parking • Parking at the SLCC Jordan Campus is monitored by campus parking services. However,

ticketing and parking pass requirements will be suspended during the WREB examinations for designated parking areas.

• Candidates and patients may park in: 1. Spaces marked Dental Hygiene Patients Only (designated by blue signs) 2. Student spaces (designated by yellow painted lines).

• Do NOT park in “Metered” parking spaces • Do NOT park in faculty BLUE lines spaces • SLCC is NOT responsible for personal items left unattended in vehicles in the parking lot

3. Registration and Identification Badges

• When arriving on campus the morning of your exam please report to the DHY clinic area (HTC 133) for tours or directions to WREB orientation room.

• Numbered badges will be issue to candidates at orientation and will serve as I.D. throughout the examination. The badge must be worn at all times while in the examination areas and must be turned in along with any other candidate packet items/forms to the WREB site coordinator at the completion of the examination.

4. Messages and Telephone Use • Emergency messages for candidates may be delivered to you from the site coordinator at

the front desk, via your candidate number only. Please make sure that concerned parties who may need to reach you, have your candidate number so you may be identified promptly.

• The contact number to use during the exam is (801) 957-6001 or (801) 957-6005. • When dialing out on a campus telephone dial nine (9) and then phone number • When calling an SLCC phone number from a campus telephone dial last 4 digits (6005)

5. Security/Emergency Equipment and Protocol

• Emergency exits, portable oxygen, fire extinguisher and AED unit are indicated on clinic map (pg. 12). Equipment will be identified, and protocol discussed during clinic tour.

• The Campus Bookstore (East of the clinic entrance off the lobby) has beverages and snacks available for purchase. Hours are: 8:00am – 6:00pm Mon. – Thurs., Friday 8:00am-4:00pm, Closed Saturday

• Beverage and snack vending machines are located at the east end of the lobby in the hallway just past the cashier’s office.

• There are several fast food restaurants on 9000 South approximately 2-5 miles east of campus.

7. ATM • A Mountain America Credit Union ATM is located in the HTC lobby

8. Translation Services

• Translation services for candidates and patients are NOT provided by SLCC. Candidates wishing to bring a translator (for languages other than English) must provide all accommodations required. All translators will only be allowed into the clinical area when their services are required, and must abide by all applicable candidate rules and safety requirements.

Preparing for Clinical Phase of the Exam

1. Clinical Patient Screening • The dental hygiene clinic will be available Monday, April 24th from 9:00am-11:00am and

1:00pm-3:00pm for candidates needing to conduct screenings on their exam patients. • Salt Lake Community College will NOT provide patients for candidates. Candidates must

not ask the school for patients or patient records at any time during the WREB exams. *Contact the SLCC clinic manager to schedule a screening appointment time at (801) 957-6005.

2. Administration of Local Anesthesia

• Anesthesia administration will be available upon request. • All requests MUST be made with a minimum 24hr advanced notice with the SLCC School

Coordinator. • Prices will be set by Dentist administering anesthesia

3. Radiographs/ X-rays

• The Dental Hygiene Clinic will be available Monday, April 25th from 9:00am-11:00am and 1:00pm-3:00pm for candidates to expose and develop radiographs on their exam patients.

• Candidates need to provide their own film, holders and mounts. No digital radiographs will be available.

4. Operatories, Handpiece Hookups • Each operatory is equipped with one (1) Dental chair (ADEC radial), one (1) delivery unit

equipped with an air/water syringe, high volume suction and low volume suction (ADEC), one (1) slow speed handpiece hookup pictured below.

• NO handpieces will be available for use or rent from SLCC. Fiber optic handpieces are NOT compatible with our dental units, example of correct handpiece style pictured below. The air pressure to each operatory chair, and all handpieces, is factory set at approximately 35 to 50 psi. Please ensure that any slow-speed handpiece you bring has a working gasket and will operate effectively within these parameters.

5. Ultrasonic Scaling Equipment • If you are using your own Ultrasonic scaling equipment/unit: an A-dec quick disconnect

plug must be on the water hose to connect to the dental unit (see picture below). • The clinic has a limited number of 30K Cavitron® units available for use during the exam

at no additional fee. *Please make Caviton® requests after your clinical orientation with the school coordinator, Ms. Mitchell.

• Ultrasonic inserts and handpieces must be 30K to be compatible with SLCC Cavitron® units.

Candidates are responsible for providing all 30K inserts/tips and handpieces for their own use. *No handpieces or insert tips are available for rent/use.

*See page 8 & 9 for a complete list of supplies provided by Salt Lake Community College during the WREB exams.

During the Examination

1. Infection Control a. Surface Asepsis

• Handles of the unit light, x-ray heads, and air-water syringes may be covered with clear plastic all wrap (on cart and in operatory).

• The patient chair must be disinfected with OPTIM 33TB-Wipes at each unit. • Plastic chair barriers and plastic wrap are provided. Disinfecting pray and wipes are

available in each operatory. • Disposable plastic over gloves are available for candidates (on cart). • An auxiliary will be staffed in the sterilization room (135H) to process all contaminated

instruments. b. Personal Protective Equipment

• Appropriate protective clothing, including gowns must be worn in occupational exposure situations.

• Nitrile (non-latex) gloves and masks are available from the supply carts located in the clinic.

• Candidates are to provide their own OSHA-acceptable protective glasses for themselves and their patients.

• Antibacterial soap is available at all sinks within the clinic. • Hand sanitizer is available on each operatory countertop.

c. Hazardous Waste

• Any blood/saliva-soaked waste is considered hazardous and must be disposed of in red biohazard bags (also available on the supply carts).

• Biohazard bags may be attached to the sides of the suction arm. At the end of each session, bags should be sealed with tape or self-sealing strip and brought to sterilization where they will be placed in biohazard waste containers.

d. Sharps Disposal • All needles, anesthetic cartridges and any other disposable sharps are to be placed in the

red plastic sharps containers located on each countertop area.

2. Sterilization

• Candidates should arrive with all instruments previously sterilized for exams. • Sterilization supplies will be available on the supply carts as and in the sterilization area. • If you choose to have your instruments sterilized by the SLCC clinic upon completion of

your exams, give your bagged instruments, with your candidate number to the sterilization attendant. Please allow 24 hours for sterilization process. *Note, we will not ultrasonic or remove your items from their labeled bags prior to sterilization.

• If you choose not to have your instruments sterilized by SLCC upon completion of your exams, give your contaminated bagged instruments, identified with your candidate number to the sterilization attendant located in the sterilization room (135H). Items will be enclosed in a biohazard bag and placed at the front desk for immediate picked up.

• All instruments can be claimed at the clinic reception desk by candidates only from bins marked “Sterile or Non-Sterile” by 5:00pm each weekday and 4:00pm Saturday Salt Lake Community College is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged instruments

3. Medical Emergencies In order to alert WREB/clinic personnel to a medical emergency occurring with your patient, the following protocol must be followed:

a. Remain with your patient. Do NOT leave him/her unattended. You must alert & send a nearby assistant/responsible person to report the problem to the WREB Chief Examiner.

b. The WREB Chief Examiner will make a judgment as to whether an emergency requiring outside help exists.

c. If needed assistant/responsible person will be sent to the nearest phone to activate the Emergency Medical System (EMS) by dialing 911.

d. As appropriate for type of emergency: • Place the patient in either a sitting or supine position, • Assess responsiveness • Check breathing • Check airway for blockage/aspiration • Check pulse • Be prepared to perform CPR, as indicated

e. An emergency medical kit is located in labeled cabinet of operatory 9. f. Emergency oxygen units are available and specific locations will be indicated during the clinic

tour. g. AED unit is available on the north wall between operatories 12 and 13 h. In the case of any medical emergency candidate must immediately notify WREB chief

examiner. i. Candidate assumes all responsibility for medical emergency management of patient including

resuscitative procedure & administration of emergency oxygen until relieved by EMS personnel.

4. Anesthesia Local Anesthetic and needles will be supplied by SLCC as indicated on page 8 & 9 of this

handbook. *NO SLCC practitioners will be available to administer anesthesia to patients. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Salt Lake Community College has a limited number of backup instruments for emergency use only available upon request, but items must be returned to the SLCC sterilization attendant upon completion of examination.
