Last year saw our dentists completing an outreach

program visiting selected local schools to bring about

more dental awareness. This year we will continue

this program showing our commitment to the local

community and more importantly the children who

deserve optimal dental care.

This year also launches our program for childrens

dentistry, focusing on the prevention of tooth decay.

One of our nurses, Mrs Laurie Mason, has recently

completed further training allowing her to see chil-

dren for fluoride treatment and oral hygiene instruc-

tion.

We have this year also completed extensive refur-

bishments and the development of optimal cross in-

fection control facilities. Our commitment and dedi-

cation stands to provide the best care for our pa-

tients in a comforting and professional environment.

First established as a Dental Practice in

1903, Peter R. Jones is now the largest

practice in Pontefract and stands tall as

one of the oldest serving dental prac-

tices. From a single surgery it now pro-

vides a wide range of treatment by six

qualified dentists.

The practice is also a training practice,

allowing newly qualified dentists to pro-

ceed onto full registration. This year

sees the departure of Miss Payal Hirani

and Mr Johnlery Stroud, and welcomes

Mr Chris Marston and Mr Sachin Soni.

Specialist interest in the practice include

Oral Surgery, such as the extraction of

wisdom teeth, otherwise commonly

referred to the hospital.

Cosmetic Dentistry is a further special-

ity in our practice. Dr Fayaz Ladak, who

joined the practice in 2003, has over the

last five years, focused his efforts on all

lines of cosmetic work, including Facial

Aesthetics. This year sees the comple-

tion of his postgraduate MSc in Cos-

metic Restorative Dentistry, confirming

Cosmetic Dentistry When people think cosmetic treatment, they think of costly procedures

and treatment that may be beyond them. Cosmetic dentistry by definition

is an enhancement in the appearance of your teeth. This could be simply

cosmetic shaping of the visible teeth, replacement of old unsightly fillings

or crowns, or more in depth procedures to redesign your smile or improve

the functional aspect of your teeth.

More often I find that patients have always wanted to improve their smile

and general appearance, however, have never been offered this or have

lead themselves to believe it was not possible.

Like they say, never say never…..

Replacement of Old Fillings

Old fillings have a tendency to discolour with time and display a perception that the

tooth has deteriorated. In previous years, a white filling was something which was not

black or silver, therefore attention was not paid to achieve a direct shade match. With

time and development in aesthetic restorations, it is far more achievable to create an al-

most perfect shade match.

A correctly placed white restoration is placed in a layering technique. This allows for the

required shade to be achieved, as the tooth may require more than one shade of restora-

tion. This procedure is very simple and need not be costly. The benefit from the proce-

dure may have a great impact on the appearance of your teeth whilst enhancing your

smile.

Cosmetic Shaping

With time and certain gum conditions, there are occasions when teeth move. They can

either tilt or move down. Occasionally it is possible to reshape the teeth and align them

in order to once again give better presentation. Such subtle changes again can be simple,

pain-free, not costly and can have a positive impact on the appearance of teeth and how

they are perceived.

Replacement of Old Crowns

With time many patients experience a level of gum recession which exposes the margins

of old crowns. The margin is often metallic and appears black and gives a perception of

a deteriorating tooth, giving an unsightly appearance, especially when in the aesthetic

zone, i.e. appearing when you smile.

Again, treatment for this does not have to be intense. Simple replacement of old crowns

can eliminate the unsightly appearance of the black margins. Well constructed modern

crowns can prevent a repeat in this problem if opting for enhanced porcelain margins or

all ceramic crowns which are metal free.

fillings can often

look very unsightly’

Teeth Whitening

Whitening is one of the easiest, most commonly requested and obvious treatment options

taken by patients to improve the appearance of their teeth. Whitening is still a very quick

and harmless method to better your smile. Research has shown that improving the shade of

the teeth has a direct impact on the patients’ quality of life, confidence and desire to smile.

Whitening can be carried out instantly as a chair-side procedure using the famous Zoom

technique as seen on the Extreme Makeover television programme, or it can be completed

with take-home kits, or a combination of both.

Smile Design

On some occasions, there is a limit to what can be achieved with simple cosmetic options. If this still proves to not

fulfil the wishes of a patient, we can assess the smile and the patient’s wishes by completing a smile design visit.

This includes taking models, photographs and assessing various features liked and disliked. From this we would aim

to prepare a set of diagnostic models to present to the patient with what can be achieved. Often this is needed regard-

less, to eliminate false expectations and to give an indication of the aim of the proposed treatment.

Crownwork and Veneers

Often teeth are rotated, twisted or tilted, and minimal intervention may improve the

appearance, but may not produce the most desirable result. In these cases, perform-

ing mild reductions to the teeth and treating with veneers and crowns allows the

dentist to change the shape, size and shade of the teeth to give the patient what they

have always wanted. Though this avenue in treatment is more costly, it is also a

more definitive approach with predictable results. The smile which patient’s may

have initially thought escapes their capacity, may actually be achievable.

Occasionally internal whitening specific to root filled or traumatised teeth may be re-

quired to specifically lift the shade of individual odd teeth. This procedure is normally

overlooked, however, is possible and can be very simple and inexpensive.

Existing anterior fillings and crowns do not whiten. If your natural teeth have discol-

oured against existing old crowns, then this can present as a mis-match in your smile.

Treatment following whitening therefore may also include the replacement of old fill-

ings and crowns to achieve the best complete results.

‘Often the crown margins become exposed as the gum re-

cedes. This can easily be improved by replacing the crown

to promote a more healthier and more aesthetic smile’

‘Full smile makeovers require appropriate

planning to achieve the best results’

"This research may help the development of a new treat-

ment for depressive illnesses," said Dr Lewis, who was pre-

senting the research at the British Psychological Society's

annual meeting in Brighton.

"Unlike other treatments for depression, which have signifi-

cant negative side effects, the main side effect of a botox-

based treatment would be a younger-looking face. But as

the cosmetic effect of botox is temporary, so will be the

emotional effect. As the effect of the botox wears off, one's

mood is likely to return to normal levels."

Botox Could Treat Depression...

Article taken from the Telegraph, Wednesday, 1 April 2009

Botox treatment has an uplifting side effect that brings a smile to the face, research-

ers have found. By preventing frowning, the treatment may actually make people

happier, psychologists said. Scientists studied 25 people, 12 of whom had botulinum

toxin A injections to the forehead whilst others had fillers, peals or cosmetic treat-

ments. All the participants completed a mood questionnaire two weeks later.

Patients who received botox treatment were found to be significantly less depressed, anxious and irritable than

those who did not. Study leader Dr Michael Lewis, from the University of Cardiff, said: "Both groups had had

some form of cosmetic treatment, and there was no difference in how effective they thought their treatment had

been, so this result is most likely due to the effects of botox specifically."

Botox injections freeze the forehead muscles, preventing frowning. The research findings support the theory that

expressions feedback and impact emotions, Dr Lewis said. By blocking frowning, botox prevents expressions of

negative emotion, resulting in a happier mood.
