Dental X-Rays help to view parts of teeth and supporting structures of jaws covered by gums or inside the bone and cannot be seen on clinical examination. Depending on where the X-Ray film is placed, X-Rays may be intra-oral (inside the mouth) or extra-oral ( outside the mouth). There are different types and sizes of X-Ray films used depending on the area or field of interest.

Types of Extra Oral X-RaysPANORAMIC : Also called orthopantomographs. Enables view of all teeth in both jaws along with surrounding anatomical structures. This type of X-Ray has a wide spectrum of use, to name a few- viewing growth and development of jaws, for diagnosis and treatment planning for multidisciplinary treatment or implant placements, or for detecting jaw fractures or pathology, or temporomandibular joint disorders.

Different X-Ray SystemsConventional: These systems use X-Ray films which have to be developed externally to view area of interest.

Digital imaging: This is a newer technique for X-Ray imaging. Also called as Radio Visuo Graphy (RVG), this system generates digital images directly on computer screens with the help of specific software.

Different X-Ray SystemsThe main advantages of this system over the conventional are that they eliminate the need of films since a sensor is used instead, radiation exposure time is reduced to a great extent thereby reducing radiation hazards, images can be retained without distortion, can be reproduced at any time, availability to magnify/contrast/highlight/measure area of interest with the help of software, electronic transfer/printing image is possible.
