Denture Problems and How to Avoid Them
If you were born before the 1940s,
you probably didn't regularly visit a
dentist. Chances are you are
probably a denture user today. It
has been said that about one out of
four people age 65 and older have
lost all of their teeth.
One of the most common problems
that denture wearers experience is dentures that do not fit them well. If
dentures don't fit well, it can cause a significant amount of pain. In some
cases, they will rub against the gums creating a callus called an epulis. This
may result in the need for oral surgery to remove the callus.
Getting used to eating with your new dentures is something that takes some
getting used to. One way to adjust is by avoiding harder foods that require a
lot of chewing. Start out with softer foods like soup, eggs, bread, bananas
and applesauce. When you do begin incorporating harder foods, make sure
you cut them into smaller pieces.
Some people find it difficult to speak when they get new dentures. Speaking
normally will take practice. Patients with new dentures often say the first 3
days are the most difficult. It may be a little embarrassing at first for some.
Just make sure you practice saying more difficult words aloud until you get
used to it.
It is very important that you properly care for your dentures. They must be
kept free of plaque and tartar build up. Make sure you clean your dentures

at least two times a day; generally in the morning and the evening. You
must be careful while cleaning your dentures because if they are dropped,
they may crack. You should remove your dentures every night to give your
mouth a chance to rest.
