This 4-day hands-on workshop will be led by Dr. Raouf Kilada, Research Associate in the Biology Department at the University of New Brunswick (Saint John), who will demonstrate the new technique for direct age determination in crustaceans. Lectures on day one will provide the background for the practical hands-on lab work. Most of the time will be spent in the lab where participants will dissect and prepare thin sections of shrimp eyestalks, and gastric mills of lobsters and crabs. Raouf will then guide them through the image interpretation steps. The workshop wraps up on Friday morning with time for discussion. All specimens and lab equipment will be provided. You will need to bring a laptop and you are welcome to bring your own shrimp and/or crab specimens to work on. Before working at UNB, Raouf was a Research Biologist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography where he worked on the population structure, growth and age of commercial aquatic species in Eastern Canada. In 2007, as a project lead scientist he started to develop the new direct aging technique for crustaceans. In 2012, he and collaborating Canadian scientists completed a manuscript entitled “Direct determination of age in shrimp, crabs, and lobsters” which was published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. Since then Raouf has worked on aging many different species and given training workshops in Alaska, Iceland and Australia.

This Workshop begins Tuesday, March 24 at 1pm with registration at Anderson House on the Huntsman upper campus, and ends after lunch on Friday, March 27. Maximum 15 participants.

BIOGEOSCIENCE INSTITUTE 2015 SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP

This position will be stationed at the two Field Stations of the Biogeoscience Institute of the University of Calgary. The Barrier Lake Field Station is located in the Kananaskis Valley, 80 km west of Calgary and the R.B. Miller Field Station is located in the Sheep River Valley, 100 km southwest of Calgary. The intern’s main role is twofold: 1) assisting researchers with field work and lab duties as required. Example research projects include Plant Biology (cost of reproduction in herbaceous plants), Animal Physiology (impacts of ecological stressors on mountain lake ecosystems), Populations and Communities (Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Columbian ground squirrels, alpine plant interactions), Ecological and Evolutionary Applications (forest encroachment on alpine butterflies), Spatial Patterns in Ecology and Evolution (biotic and abiotic determinants of plant species range limits), Surface Processes (impact of glacial/sediment erosion). 2) Creating a map database based on LiDAR data of Kananaskis country. Other duties will include assisting with grounds work and other maintenance items. The intern will work a 7.5 hr day, and the day could be in split shifts with early morning and evening periods. A moderate level of physical fitness is required as hiking to alpine areas will be required and carrying field equipment will be necessary. Some field work will be required in inclement weather which could include snow, rain, cold and hot temperatures. The wage is $13/hr and accommodation is provided (shared with other staff). Kitchen facilities are available to prepare your own meals. The duration of the internship is from early May to late August. Interested students should contact Dr. E.A. Johnson. Include your C.V. and relevant experience/education. Dr. E.A. Johnson Director Biogeoscience Institute Biosciences 186 University of Calgary (403) 220-3570 [email protected]
