Kenneth Moffat CEng MIET, FHEA, MEng, BSc, Dip IT, PMP Distance learning course director | Chemical and Process Engineering Room 4.05d, Jame Weir Building, 75 Montrose Street, Glasgow G1 1XJ t: +44 (0)141 548 2148 | e: [email protected]

Dear Prospective student,

The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng honours) in Chemical Engineering by distance learning was created at the request of local industry in 1992. Our first graduates were based in the UK and attended the university on a part time basis, but as technology advanced the course developed into a fully online, and truly international distance learning course with students all over the world. The BEng course by distance learning mirrors our full time Chemical Engineering BEng and is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

The MSc Process Technology and Management was developed from 1997 using the same online delivery format but intended for practicing engineers who require an advanced chemical engineering degree, combined with MBA style business and management fundamentals. The international student base, from a wide variety of disciplines and industries creates networking opportunities for graduates, while also obtaining a career enhancing, IChemE accredited qualification. For students who do not wish to commit to the full 3 year MSc, it is possible to graduate at the end of the first or second year with a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma, and likewise students who started with the intention of completing a Certificate or Diploma, can continue on to the MSc.

Due to the high number of enquires that I receive I would appreciate it if you would attempt to find the answers to your questions within this brochure in the first instance, but if you have any further questions or wish to discuss or apply for the course, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or telephone the office at +44 (0)141 548 2148.

Yours Sincerely,

Progression to MEng or MSc Students with an appropriate standard of performance may be eligible to progress to the Master of Engineering (MEng) or (MSc) Process Technology and Management.

Students who wish to progress to MEng must first complete the BEng, as the MEng is considered to be an integrated first degree comprising the BEng curriculum + an additional year of full time study (2 years by part time distance learning).

The MEng portion can be completed in one of two ways.

x Route 1 requires 12 weeks of attendance in which the student would attend full time classes for semester 1 then return to their workplace to complete the final project.

x An alternative part time distance learning route is also available where the load is spread across 2 years.

The MSc Process Technology and Management is a separate Postgraduate qualification so students may graduate with the BEng honours before progressing to this qualification. This MSc is a 3-year programme mixing MBA style business and management modules, with advanced engineering and technology, and is intended for students who are in, or aspire to be in a senior engineering, management or technology role.

Please enquire to [email protected] if you require any further details on the MEng or MSc programmes

The MSc Project The MSc Process Technology and Management is made up of 120 taught postgraduate credits and a final project.

The final project is normally conducted in the student’s own workplace, giving immediate payback to employers and allowing the student to make practical use of the concepts learned in the preceding years of the course. The project is worth 60 credits of the 180 required for the MSc and would normally be the main focus of the 3rd year of the course.

An academic supervisor with some experience in the students chosen project field to help assist the student with the academic requirements of the project, although the management and eventual conclusion of the project will be driven by the student.

Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates This course offers students who do not want to commit to the full 3 years of the MSc course. There is an option of the option of graduating with:

x a Postgraduate Diploma after 2 years or 120 credits, x or a Postgraduate Certificate after 1 year or 60 credits.

This can also provide a student who has either failed the MSc or chooses not to continue, with a qualification reflecting the work completed up to that point. Students who wish only to apply for a Certificate or Diploma should still apply using the MSc application link but should indicate to the course manager at the end of the relevant year that they wish to be put forward for the award of Diploma or Certificate.

Please note: A student may only graduate once, so if a student chooses to graduate with a certificate or Diploma they will not be able to return and continue with the MSc.

Bridging Module Rationale The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering aim to provide our distance learning students with a high quality chemical engineering education, and an IChemE accredited degree award that is identical to that received by our full time students. In the past many students joining the course have exited the course before the end of the 1st year because they either did not have sufficient background or were unrealistic about the level and work required to complete a degree through part time study. Entrants to this degree programme are awarded 240 credits, the equivalent to 2 years’ full time degree study, for prior learning and significant industrial experience. This means that distance learning students are effectively joining the course as 3rd year students. Full-time students entering year 3 have spent two years studying the fundamentals underpinning the study of chemical engineering, and immediately prior to that will normally have completed Advanced Higher/A-level Chemistry, Maths and Physics at high school. While our distance learning 1st year is designed to ease students in gently, they must also have the academic background to allow them to quickly meet the same assessment standards applied to full time students in the final years of the degree. The bridging programme has been specifically designed to allow you to gain, or revise the required fundamental knowledge before you join the programme. It also helps both you and us decide whether you are ready for the commitment required for successful completion of the degree. Some students have been asked to complete these modules as conditions of entry to the BEng honours degree in order to gain the additional credits required for entry, but all students would benefit from and are being encouraged to complete these bridging modules prior to entering the degree programme.

Module 1: Chemistry

Bridging for Chemical

Engineering

An introduction to chemistry required for the BEng honours course. This module covers the following concepts:

1 - Units and dimensions 2 - Chemical principles and states of matter 3 - Molar mass and reaction stoichiometry 4 - Chemical analysis 5 - Specific heat and latent heat 6 - Enthalpies of reaction and formation 7 - Ideal gases and gas mixtures 8 - Molecular kinetic theory of gases

This module is assessed by online progression quizzes at the end of each unit, and a final online exam.

Module 2: Mathematics bridging for

Chemical Engineering

This module will give details of the Mathematics knowledge required for the BEng honours degree. This should be revision for most students but we will also advise on external resources for students who require further background. At the end of each section there will be some online assessments to check your Mathematical knowledge.

Module 3: Basic

Principles of Chemical

Engineering

This module covers many of the same concepts as module 1 but in greater detail and at degree level. This module is an online version of a current module in our full time degree programme. Thus, the Module 3 difficulty level is what you will experience in year 1 of the distance learning course. As this is as difficult as any module you will complete in year 1 of the distance learning degree, you can be confident that when you have completed this module you are well-prepared and capable of passing year 1 of the degree.

List of Possible Bridging Modules

Page 26: Department of Chemical and Process Engineering · Department of Chemical and Process Engineering ... 9 A deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, ... CP424 Chemical

26

P27

Learning Methods In this bridging programme we have deliberately designed each class to be automated and without human teaching support and interaction for a number of reasons:

- Distance learning students need to be able to develop self-learning skills and be able to figure out how to get through a problem when there is no one around to ask.

- The cost of supplying a year round human tutor would significantly increase the cost of the modules for students.

Entry requirements If you are completing a bridging module in order to meet one of entry conditions to our BEng degree programme, then there may be some time limits that apply. This will be stated on your degree offer but will normally be a maximum of 6 months to complete all 3 modules. If a student is unable to find the time required to complete these modules in less than 6 months it would indicate that they are also unlikely to be able to commit the study time required to successfully complete the degree programme. Note that all conditions need to be met prior to 31st July preceding September entry to the course.

Page 27: Department of Chemical and Process Engineering · Department of Chemical and Process Engineering ... 9 A deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, ... CP424 Chemical

27

Costs. OF MODULES: Module 1: Chemistry bridging for chemical engineering = £150 Module 2: Mathematics bridging for chemical engineering = £100 Module 3: Basic Principles of chemical engineering = £500 Note: There is a recommended textbook for the Module 2 course: Engineering Mathematics 7th edition (Stroud and Dexter, 2013) which normally retails for around £40. This text is not included with the course as we believe that most students could purchase this locally at a lower cost than we could supply it for taking into account the cost of posting a heavy volume. This textbook is recommended and it should make it easier to you to follow the class but it is not a requirement. You may already have a preferred mathematics textbook that you already own that covers the same concepts and there are many mathematics resources available on the internet that will also help with revision. Booking If you wish to book one of these bridging modules, please visit the relevant links above and pay the amount given for the module(s) you require. You will receive an automated email response confirming your booking and within 2-3 working days the department will contact you with course joining instructions. If your company is paying for this and wish to be invoiced please contact [email protected] to request this.

The modules can be purchased one at a time so that the initial commitment is very low. As the costs for year 1 of the degree are over £4000, the pricing of Module 3 is intended to give a taste of the level and commitment required at a fraction of the degree entry costs. Note that while there will be no live tutor support there will also be someone available at [email protected] if you are unable to get past something or if you believe there is a mistake or something is not working as it should on the class site. Note that when you progress to the full degree programme there will be a class tutor for each module, and a forum to ask questions and discuss issues with staff and fellow students.

Accreditation

All of our degrees offered by distance learning are accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as part of the requirements for professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and may also be accepted by other institutions in related engineering fields.

Normally CEng requires learning to Masters Level and this may be achieved either by completing the MEng, or the BEng + MSc.

In the UK, professional registration as CEng is governed by the Engineering Council but you must be a member of an Engineering Institution such as the IChemE in order to apply, and it is that institution who will administer your application. This degree is approved by the IChemE as Masters provision towards CEng provided that suitable underpinning knowledge normally at undergraduate level is also evidenced.

In the UK, professional registration as CEng is governed by the Engineering Council but you must be a member of an Engineering Institution such as the IChemE in order to apply, and it is that institution who will administer your application. Any questions about CEng should be addressed to the institution that you are either a member of or

wish to join, the University are not in a position to say what will or will not be accepted by a particular institution.

FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

How much will it cost me?

Please visit the website for the most up-to-date information regarding course fees.

Can I take my exams at a venue local to me?

If you are considered to be in a location that is an unreasonable distance to travel you may apply to sit exams in a local venue, normally a British Council office. See the relevant section above for more information.

Am I under any obligation if I apply for the course?

No, if your application is successful you will be offered a place on the course, if you accept you are indicating your intention but it is still possible to change your mind or to defer before final registration. All that we ask is that you keep us informed of your intentions so that we can offer the place to another if you do not intend to take it up.

How flexible is the timeline for completing the course?

The MSc is intended to be completed in a 3-year timeframe. The BEng have a 3-year or 4-year timeframe; it is not possible to complete this earlier but it may be possible to take longer by applying for periods of voluntary suspension of study. Some students take this option in years where work, health or family pressures are making it impossible to study and the University is sympathetic to these requests. Individual modules run over a fixed timetable so while students can plan the pace of their own study, exam dates and assignments deadlines will still have to be adhered to.

I already hold a Bachelor’s degree or BEng; can I join the MEng directly?

Unfortunately, our MEng is designed to follow on from the Strathclyde BEng so students must complete our BEng first before progressing. We offer an MSc which allows direct entry to students who hold a first degree

Will course materials be posted to me?

Occasionally we have to post things to you but most of the classes are entirely online based. In year 1 there are no course materials that need to be posted and everything will be self-contained within the class sites.

Where can I find more detailed information about how the course works and what I need to do?

This brochure will give you a lot of information about the course, but the student handbook is also available on the course page and this gives some more detailed information including links to regulations etc.

Is there an updated module description document? If so where can I find it?

A document listing the module descriptors for all modules available within an academic year is available on the homepage of each degree:

BEng:http://www.strath.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/chemicalengineeringmengdistancelearning/

MSc:https://www.strath.ac.uk/courses/postgraduatetaught/processtechnologymanagement/

Will it be possible for distance learning students to attend regular classes at the University for courses enrolled for?

You are welcome to attend classes at the University. Probably the best thing to do is the ask the lecturer directly on the forum of the class site so that they know to expect you. Some classes are distance learning only so there will be no equivalent class to attend.

How much time am I expected to put towards each class?

Theoretically the 10 credit modules represent 100 hours work including study, assignments and exam - how this actually works out in practice can vary depending on the students prior knowledge of the subject and many other factors.
