Publications and publication points

Publication points achieved are important performance measures for K1. Although the number of

publications might tell us more about our research activity, we definitely keep an eye on the publi-

cation points as well.

K1 considers that the number of academic publications is the most important performance measure for

research. This applies to publications where at least one of the authors is affiliated to the department.

The quality aspect is addressed by bibliometrics, where we include citations and the impact factor of the

journals, as well as look at whether K1 has first or last authorship.

Publication points are an important financing basis for the institution, and K1 is measured at this. A recent

evaluation shows that many are still uncertain about the calculation of the publication points. The indicator

combines quantity, quality and level of contribution. A research article counts as 1 or 3, depending on the

quality of the journal it is published in. The points are distributed equally among all authors. When an

author specifies two addresses, the two institutions get half each of the author's points.

The quality assessment of journals in level 1 (1 point) or level 2 (3 points) is done on a yearly basis by an

academic committee where the regional collaboration bodies have elected a member each. In Medicine,

there are 21 such committees. Level 2 represents journals where you should seek to publish your very

best work. The academic committees’ reviews are based on impact factor, quality and strategy. The list of

UiB’s members in the commitees can be found on the next page. You can find level 2 journals by search-

ing in the various fields at this link.

You can make suggestions for changes within level 2 to the relevant academic committee. Level 2 should

consist of approximately 20% of all publications in the different professional fields, and of what is regis-

tered in the ISI-database. This is not the same as 20% of all journals in the field.

The evaluation emphasized that publication points are not subject neutral. It requires more of an individual

to achieve the same number of points in medicine than in some other disciplines. The sharing of points

between several authors and author affiliations is probably the main

reason. Efforts are made to make the points more subject neutral.

At K1we place considerable emphasis on publishing results. Number

of publications, publication quality and the extent of K1’s role are key

parameters. Publication point score is a useful parameter at an insti-

tutional level, and well understood by both the academic and adminis-

trative staff.

The academic committees in Medicine

Below you can find an overview of the members of the academic committees most relevant to K1’s

disciplines.

These members quality assess journals in level 1 (1 point) or level 2 (3 points), and do yearly reviews based on impact factor, quality and strategy. Yoy can here see the complete list of all the disciplines within Medicine.

Robert Bjerknes is our member in the national publications committee in Medicine, and Nils Erik Gilhus is

leader of the national publications committee.

We congratulate K1’s Lene Bjerke Laborie for

the victory in oral presentations!

The study deals with hip dysplasia in newborns. The

jury said: Large, comprehensive and very useful

population study of an important issue with major

sequelae if not detected. Also avoiding excessive

treatment. Convincing results, great presentation

and well performed.

We also congratulate K1’s

Eirik Søfteland and Tone

Elise Gjøtterud Henriksen

News from the Postgraduate School of Clinical Medical Research

The Postgraduate School of Clinical Medical Research has now a new leader, new board, more

courses and has just completed the week-long event ”Research Presentations from 2013”. The

new leader, Stefan Johansson, gives us an update on the different activities.

Last week, The Postgraduate School of Clinical Medical Research success-

fully held its annual event: Research Presentations 2013. A total of 45 pos-

ters and 15 oral presentations were being held from PhDs and postdocs

from K1, K2 and the hospital departments. The event illustrates the wide

variety of research projects that are being performed at the two depart-

ments with very high quality poster- and oral presentations. The event en-

ded with an award ceremony, speeches and entertainment. We congratula-

te all the award winners, lead by first price winners Alessandro De Bortoli

(K2) for the poster contest and Lene Bjerke Laborie (K1) for her talk. I would

also like to thank the committee members, PhD students Marie Omsland,

Monica Dalva and Ina Nepstad and the jury for making this an event to

remember!

The Research school begins the year with a new board. We thank the pre-

vious leader Eyvind Rødahl and the board for their work. We wish to conti-

nue their work and aim at making the Research school a meeting point for

PhD-students where they can meet with peers across different research fields to discuss science and life.

This semester, we will start a new research seminar series - Perspectives in translational medicine. The

lectures will be held by leading scientists and clinicians at K1 and K2, the first Wednesday each month at

14.15-15.00. We hope that the series will be characterized by high quality research and presentations,

”hot topics” and a special emphasize on translational studies. We welcome all researchers, postdocs and

PhD-students and hope that this will be a forum for scientific exchange and discussions.

The first lecture will be held by Bjørn-Tore Gjertsen: ”Personalized Medicine - How personal can we get?”,

March 5th. PhD students who attend the seminars can get his approved as a one credit phd course. You

just have to sign up on the course - FSKLI902!

Furthermore, from this year on, the network meetings that are held and administered by the PhD students

will be administered as a PhD course. This means that those who present their work at the meetings can

sign up for the course and get one credit if they complete the course requirements (FSKLI901). The

network meetings will stay open for all PhD students and provide food for your body and mind.

Note that the deadline for course registrations is already February 1st. More info can be found at :

FSKLI901 and FSKLI902.
