Students are also encouraged to review and write research papers if the curriculum allows. In order to make all this possible, various ICT platforms and tools such as MS Teams, Google Classroom, Moodle, MS Powerpoint, Quiz apps such as Kahoot are being used by the faculty. Students are also encouraged to refer to research databases such as JSTOR, EPW and HBR to enhance their understanding level. In conclusion, each faculty member eagerly learns new techniques and teaching practices through frequent training and development programmes so that they put their best foot forward in the class environment.

Best Practices

The landscape of education industry is changing at a fast pace and the faculty of Commerce

department endeavours to stay abreast with emerging teaching aids and ICT tools. Consequently, to

keep in line with the online mode of teaching during the pandemic, many faculty members have

created their own video tutorials through YouTube so that students can watch them as and when

their internet connectivity and time allows. They also share additional study material in the form of

UGC-CEC lectures, NPTEL Lectures, IGNOU e-Gyan Kosh and You Tube video lectures.

In order to make the class more interesting, lectures also incorporate case studies pertaining to the

subject. It helps the students to get a real-life exposure to what is written in the books. Apart from

this, use of movie clips from movies such as Chak De and Mission Mangal for highlighting the value

of ethics in management, displaying leadership roles has also been spotted amongst Professors.

They also use mock trading platforms and acquaint the students with real time trading through

mobile apps for finance classes. The department has also organized industrial visits to reputed

companies such as Honda, Moriroku, Coca Cola, NMPL and KPMG in the past. It helps the students in

developing a sense of proximity between their books and actual workplaces.

For class assessment, Teachers have been conducting quizzes, project collaborations, open book and

case study tests as well as written assignments on contemporary issues related to the subject.

Students are also encouraged to review and write research papers if the curriculum allows. In order

to make all this possible, various ICT platforms and tools such as MS Teams, Google Classroom,

Moodle, MS Powerpoint, Quiz apps such as Kahoot are being used by the faculty. Students are also

encouraged to refer to research databases such as JSTOR, EPW and HBR to enhance their

understanding level. In conclusion, each faculty member eagerly learns new techniques and teaching

practices through frequent training and development programmes so that they put their best foot

forward in the class environment.

Leadership Lessons from the movie “Mission Mangal”

‘Mission Mangal’ is a rousing story of an ordinary team accomplishing an extraordinary feat by

asphyxiating challenges on-course through continuous innovation, grit and determination. The story

exhibits the power of a team and the right attitude towards the goal as an underlying factor behind

the success of any mission. Alongside entertainment with humour, the story serves as a leader’s

handbook in building high performing teams.

For many of us this movie is also about learning key management good practices which are very

applicable and valuable for our day-to-day tasks. Mission Mangal is a tale of inspiration that shows

how dreams transform into reality with a clear vision and outright courage. It goes beyond

entertainment and stands out to be a leader’s handbook for managing a team.

Here are some important lessons leaders can learn from this pathbreaker of a movie:

1. Leader’s take responsibility for the failure

The movie begins with the failure of the GSLV mission. Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) takes the

outright responsibility of the failure even though Tara (Vidya Balan) repeatedly admits that it was

her ignorance which led to the failure. Dhawan displays the true spirit of a leader - ‘Success belongs

to the team and failure is yours’.

2. Challenges set a glorifying path to success

The press-meet, the initial rejection of project by the sponsor, partial budget for the mission, lack of

experienced resource allocation, constant discouragement from the other teams, are some of the

challenges that the team faced. This never deterred the end goal of the leader – “Mission

Mangal”. The attitudes of the resources were also a challenge initially, which the leader handled

well, which was more intelligent than emotional. It is important to know the limitations and plan

work with agility to achieve the end objective.

3. Back your Team and Team-mates

Varsha Pillai (Nithya Menen) was proposed to be given full support during pregnancy and childcare

alongside the freedom to select if she wanted to be a part of the mission. Similarly, Neha Siddiqui

(Kirti Kulhari) was offered accommodation by colleague Ananth Iyer (HG Dattatreya). Your team is

about individuals coming together, there would always be one or the other challenges faced by your

team members. If we can nourish an environment of mutual and organizational support, people

would go beyond the call of duty to ensure the success of the mission.
