Have you wondered in what grade level various background topics are first introduced? For example, did you know that students in third grade learn to measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l) (3.MD.2)? When do students learn about decimals? In the fourth grade, students are learning to use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100 and rewriting 0.62 as 62/100 and locating 0.62 on a number line (4.NF.6). They also learn to compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size and using the >, =, or < symbols (4.NF.7). Do you know that students in fifth grade are making line plots to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) (5.MD.2)? This workshop will answer all of these questions, enable you to work on some hands-on activities, and provide you with the background material needed for you to teach your course. This series of workshops is designed to support the educational professional (teacher, administrator, psychologist, social workers) who are bringing forth mindfulness practices into their schools. The most successful and sustainable school mindfulness programs are ones that support and implement practices for both educators and students in order to deepen their ability to focus and attend as well as support their mental, emotional and physical health.

These series of workshops were specifically designed to support the personal mindfulness practice of the educator. It is important for educators to understand how to self-regulate using mindfulness practices for themselves in order to effectively implement any mindfulness curriculums they may be using in their districts. This workshop will consist of a series of 5 meetings. Each meeting will include formal mindfulness practice, discussion and share, and topic talk. Some of the various topics which will be introduced are: stress physiology, neuroscience and brain development, emotions, resiliency and trauma, communication, kindness, self-compassion and gratitude.

This course provides the necessary theoretical and practice-based knowledge to support educators in the recognition and effective integration of social and emotional learning competencies into daily classroom discussion. This is done through an integrative and relational-based professional development model. This one-day course will be comprised of: a brief review of the history of social-

emotional learning and evidenced- based SEL practices, the science and the practice of integrative approaches toward whole child development, and effective instructional methods to integrate core SEL competencies. The integration of core competencies will be achieved through the appropriate use of mindfulness-based practices and movement-based practices in the classroom; the use of narrative practices to support teacher-student relationships; the use of kindness, gratitude, and compassion practices to promote healthy expressions of emotion; an understanding of the interpersonal effects of trauma; and the use of restorative practices to support a highly engaged and nurturing learning environment. Objectives:

• Identify five core competencies of social emotional learning • Successfully integrate at least two core practices for effective instruction • Develop a working knowledge of evidenced-based SEL practices • Develop a working knowledge of the science of mindfulness, movement, gratitude, and restorative

practices for classroom application • Develop a working knowledge of the interpersonal effects of trauma on learning

One of the most taxing tasks for school administrators, counselors’ and mental health professionals in particular is the managements of the at risk or high risk students in the schools. Risk may be identified by any and/or all the entities including but not limited to the families and hospitals/emergency departments. Although schools are not responsible for providing clinical services and are not behavioral health clinics they are often in a position to manage such students to assist in socio emotional aspects to facilitate LEARNING. The focus of this training will be to identify review and discuss the basic competency areas relating to what constitutes risk and how to manage and reduce risk over time. Teams from different schools will review actual challenging situations as basis of developing a comprehensive model that is proactive and not just reactive. Potential areas to cover:

1. What constitutes Risk? 2. Who classifies and identifies level of risk 3. Who should be involved in risk management? 4. Identify different kinds of risk 5. How to manage the students/families in managing their own risk 6. How to engage the key parties in reducing risk 7. Addressing the needs of students discharged from EDs and Hospitals 8. Developing a practical and effective model fitting the uniqueness of each school district

Training Description: Naloxone has been fundamental in the efforts to decrease rates of fatal overdoses. This training teaches first responders, likely opioid overdose witnesses and community members to understand, recognize, respond to and reverse suspected opioid overdoses using naloxone. Participants will learn ways to obtain free or low-cost naloxone for personal use. This training is modeled after the evidence-based SAMHSA Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit.

Training objectives include: • to increase understanding and awareness of fatal overdoses related to opioids and the impact within

the community • to identify risk factors for an overdose • to be able to recognize a suspected overdose • to be able to identify the five essential steps for first responders as outlined in the SAMHSA Opioid

Overdose Prevention Toolkit in the event of an overdose • to be able to correctly use naloxone to save lives • to understand how to access the Naloxone Co-payment Assistance Program (NCAP) to obtain free or

low-cost naloxone.

Why Attend: • to become part of the solution to solving the opioid issue in the community • to learn how to save a life during an overdose situation • to receive education on crucial information related to opioids and the surrounding community

Background: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded states grants as part of the State Targeted Response (STR) to the opioid crisis. One of New York State’s initiatives as part of the grant focuses on addressing opioid overdose related fatalities in counties showing very high rates of overdose deaths and emergency department visits related to opioid use disorder. This initiative involves training thousands of first responders and other likely witnesses in these counties.

This workshop will focus on the challenges reflected in the three parts of the new Global Regents to be administered in June 2019. Instructional strategies to address the demands of the multiple choice questions, the Constructed Response Questions (Short Answer), and Enduring Issues Question will be presented. Since all parts of the exam will require students to apply the Social Studies Practices in responding to stimulus-based tasks, a shift in instruction away from mere content memorization is necessary. Illustrative materials to assist teachers in making this instructional shift to guide students in applying discipline specific skills to content they are investigating will be shared. Mrs. Grant's experience with the new Advanced Placement History courses and assessments will inform the preparation of the materials for this workshop.

Studies show that approximately 20 percent of all students are diagnosable for a mental, emotional or behavioral health issue. In a single classroom, it is quite conceivable that a teacher might be dealing with 4 or 5 different disorders. Some of the most common challenges mainstreamed in the classroom tend to be:

• Anger Disorders • Bipolar Disorder • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder • Oppositional Defiant Disorder • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • ADHD • Anxiety Disorder • Asperger’s Syndrome • Borderline Personality Disorder • Reactive Attachment Disorder

These issues are often undiagnosed and easily misunderstood — and may be responded to as simple discipline issues. Behaviors that tend to be common to students who are wired differently include: Disorganization, Perfectionism, Trouble dealing with change, Performance and testing anxiety, Social anxiety, over- and under-reacting to adults and peers. The goal of this training is to: provide you with key insights and approaches to help you prevent disruptions and distractions, while maximizing the abilities of students with these unique challenges. Come learn practical ways to prevent students from riding the mental health escalator and integrate other successful approaches to reach students with emotional, mental and behavioral challenge.
