Preface UGC-SAP Sponsored Department

The Department of Educational Technology has the unique distinction of

having been selected by University Grants Commission for the Special Assistance Programme

(SAP) under Departmental Research Support in the year 2007. It was established in the year

1988 as the first-of-its-kind-department in the entire country for Teacher Education with a

special focus on Educational Technology. The establishment of the Department of Educational

Technology was a pioneering effort in India to popularize the concept of Educational Technology

among the teaching community at various levels. Twenty years after its inception, the

department today stands as a leading centre for study and research in Education, in general and

the development and application of Educational Technology, in particular. The department has

scaled great heights and has made significant contribution in all the dimensions of Higher

Education viz., Teaching, Research and Extension. It has forged partnerships with many

agencies of education at different levels with a view to promoting the application of Educational

Technology for qualitative improvement of education at all levels across disciplines. Initially, the

M.Ed. programme was started in the year 1990 and NCTE (National Council for Teacher

Education), the statutory body, governing the teacher education institutions in the country

granted the approval for the M.Ed. programme in the year 2000.

Teacher Oriented Televised Education (TOTE) Studio

The Department of Educational Technology is well equipped

with the latest technological equipments. Teacher Oriented Televised Education (TOTE) Studio

with Digital Video System facilities is available in the department. The Teacher Oriented

Televised Education (TOTE) Studio of the Department of Educational Technology was

established in the year 1993 at the cost of Rs.17 Lakhs, sponsored by UGC for the production of

Module/TV course materials. Presently it is undertaken by the University and funded by the

Government of Tamil Nadu. The concept of TOTE is to promote Televised Education and

Training. Later, the TOTE Studio of the Department of Educational Technology was added with

Rs.12.5 lakh worth Digital Video equipments to train the teachers at Higher Education level to

produce their own ETV programmes. As part of the training programmes, the participants of

various refresher and orientation courses of UGC Academic Staff College of Bharathidasan

University are being given training in Video Software production and Micro-teaching skills.

Visual Classroom

The Visual Classroom has been established at the department

with a view to providing an opportunity to the students of Bharathidasan University and

affiliated colleges to reap the full benefits of the exclusive educational channels and the

educational programmes, available on other television channels. The Visual Classroom is

equipped with a DTH receiver, a Television set and a DVD recorder. The ETV programmes,

relevant to the students of Bharathidasan University and affiliated colleges are received and

recorded on DVDs, thus creating a digital repository of video-based lessons for the benefit of

the student community.

Library

The Department has a well-stacked library with about 6000 books

on various aspects of Education, Educational Technology, Media and ICT. The department

library also subscribes to leading magazines and journals of educational importance.
