Fall Greetings, Everyone!
We’ve just had two events with great guest speakers – Corinne Brinkerhoff on September 6 and Patrick Rea at the Film Rally on September 12 (see photos on pages 11 and 12). Now, we look forward to the guest speakers coming up – Sarah Price on September 24, Ben Krout on October 3, and Mike Robe on October 10! Sarah Price will screen her film American Movie and Mike Robe will screen Innocent. See inside this newsletter for times and other information about these events. The events are free to all FMS students, and I encourage you to attend as many as you can. You will learn valuable information about the film industry!
In addition, the FMS Internship Workshop will take place on October 3, and the FMS Internship Fair will be held on October 17. At the workshop, you will learn about how to present yourself and other information to use when you are applying for an internship or a job. Many employers looking for interns, both on and off campus, will be at the Fair, so come ready to present your best self!
Members of the FMS Professional Advisory Board (PAB) will be in town in early October. They will meet with faculty to discuss the state of the Department and new departmental initiatives.
The PAB consists of FMS alumni who are working in the film indus-try in various positions. For exam-ple, Mike Robe and Ben Krout are both members of the Professional Advisory Board.
Three film festivals will be held right here in Lawrence in the next few weeks! The International Peace & Conflict Film Festival is going on now at the KU Spencer Museum of Art. Next, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival will take place on October 11, and after that, The 22nd Annual Harvest of Arts Film Festival will happen on October 18. (I hope some of you submitted your films to the Harvest of Arts festival as was announced in the August newsletter.)

Special Guests and Screening
Veteran Hollywood filmmaker and KU alumnus Mike Robe will appear in person and present his newest film, Innocent, which is based on Scott Turow’s best-selling novel, at a free screening and Q&A in the Ballroom of the Kansas Union on October 10, 2013. Co-sponsors of the occasion are the FMS Department, the Literature/Film Association, and the Kansas Memorial Union.

Mr. Robe will also appear at the Literature/Film Association’s annual conference, which convenes this year at the Oread Hotel, October 10-12, 2013. He will speak to LFA members on Friday, October 11, at a luncheon event, during which he will screen and discuss his career. (This event is for LFA members and participants only.)
Mr. Robe’s many films and miniseries include a wide variety of adaptations of writers such as Evan Connell (“Son of the Morning Star”), Stephen King (“Nightmares & Dreamscapes”), and Sue Miller (“While I Was Gone”). He has worked with such notable actors as William Hurt, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jon Voight, William H. Macy, Bill Pullman, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck, and Laura Dern.
Mr. Robe also serves as President of the Professional Advisory Board for the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of Kansas, offering his expertise to educators as they assemble a curriculum to better serve students on the changing media landscape.
Special guest Ben Krout, a member of the Professional Advisory Board (PAB) for the Department of Film and Media Studies and the sponsor for the Ben Krout Grip Awareness Award (awarded to recognize a student who is either interested in being a grip and/or has been working on projects as a grip), will be in Lawrence for the PAB meeting on October 3 and 4. In addition, he will give a presentation about his career to FMS students on October 3.
Mr. Krout has worked on several Hollywood films including The Amazing Spider Man, Spy Kids, and Where the Red Fern Grows. He has also worked on many television series, such as Vegas, Weeds, House M.D., Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Parks and Recreation, and The Mentalist.

Film Festivals in Lawrence
Friends of the Kaw is the only grassroots environ-mental nonprofit dedicated to protecting and preserving the Kansas River. This year Friends of the Kaw will host the fifth annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival!

The Show Me Justice Film Festival presents:
The 22nd Annual Harvest of Arts Film Festival
This festival is a two-hour non-competitive feast of films featuring short films from throughout the Mid-west that will be shown in both Lawrence (time and location to be determined) and in Warrensburg, MO on October 18 – A two city screening for the first time in 22 years!
The Harvest of Arts Film Festival was created and is produced by KU alum Mark von Schlemmer who received his doctorate in 2010 from the
Department of Film and Media Studies and is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Missouri where he is also the Director of the Show Me Justice Film Festival, a three-day international film festival that features films with a social justice theme that will take place this year on the campus of UCM on April 10 through 12.
Professor Chuck Berg’s Cine-Jazz Quartet performed jazz interpretations of indelible songs from classic Hollywood films for the College of Art & Sciences “2013 Mini-College,” an event which brought over a hundred KU alums to the campus in early June, 2013.
As part of the observances of the sesquicentennial of the Quantrill Raid on Lawrence, Professor John Tibbetts appeared on the Missouri Valley Speakers Series to talk about how the events surrounding the Border Wars generally, and the Raid in particular, have been depicted in Hollywood movies. John's talk was given on September 8 in the Helzberg Auditorium of the downtown Kansas City Central Library. It was illustrated with film clips. The presentation was based on research he conducted for an article published in the Kansas History journal.

Recognitions and Accomplishments
Professor Chuck Berg was a panelist for “1960s Popular Culture” in conjunction with Mad Men, the Twist, and Cold War Politics in Kansas 1962, a program sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council in conjunction with the Lawrence Art Center’s “Summer Youth Theater Behind the Story Series”
and LAC’s Youth Theatre production of the musical adaptation of John Waters’ classic cult film, Hairspray, on July 16, 2013.
Professor Germaine Halegoua has been invited to give a presen-tation on Digital Media and
Urban Space at The Commons on September 20th at 4:00 p.m.
Other KU faculty also presenting that day include: Lance Rake, Design, Social Enterprise; Christine Jensen Sundstrom, Applied English Center, Interdisciplinary Research, Mentoring, and Writing; Kip Haaheim, Music, Enriching the Web Experience with Audio; and David Besson, Physics & Astronomy, Astronomy without Telescopes. Each of the presentations is only five minutes long and there should be time for some discussion afterwards.
As a part of the continued effort to bring together scholars from all disciplines, and in response to the call set forth by Bold Aspirations, The Commons presents the Research Sharing Sessions - a series designed specifically for research exchange. The format of these sessions is inspired by Pecha Kucha, which features short, slide-based talks that introduce audiences to an idea.
The goals of these sessions are:
To introduce KU Researchers to the work of their colleagues
To address questions within current research using the perspectives of many disciplines
To develop collaborative research teams as a result of overlapping interest and expertise
All KU Researchers are invited to join the conversation.

Arts Engagement Certificate
If you are interested in taking art classes outside of Film & Media Studies, enjoy attending art events, and would like to be formally recognized for your extracurricular effort in the area of art studies – there is a new certificate program that will benefit you!
The Arts Engagement Certificate is a new addition to KU’s experiential learning certificate programs. Designed to push students with a curiosity in the arts to become active members of the art community, the certificate gives FMS students the perfect opportunity to add something unique and impressive to their resumes. By taking three to four classes across participating departments (dance, music, design, theatre, architecture, visual art, and art history), attending six to eight events (and writing a one page reflection on each one), and finishing up with your capstone reflection – your transcript will include the Arts Engagement Certificate. Register now to begin recording your progress at artsengagement.ku.edu.

SOTA Student Travel Fund
Are you traveling to a conference between October 11, 2013 and February 14, 2014? Are you planning to attend a workshop or travel for a study abroad course? The School of the Arts might be able to help fund up to $750* for your trip!!

The School of the Arts Travel Grant covers travel during the following dates: October 11, 2013 through February 14, 2014.

*The final amount awarded will be based on type of travel and approval by the Associate Dean of the School of the Arts.
You can apply for the following options:
Option 1: Up to $2501 may be awarded to students who attend regional or national professional conferences directly related to their area of study. Students attending conferences as a group must still apply to Student Travel Fund individually.
Option 2: Up to $5001 may be awarded for the following activities:
1. Support for students to participate in regional, national or international conferences where they are performing or presenting papers, workshops, poster sessions, or other work.
2. Students invited to perform, present, or exhibit at other regional, national, or international venues related to their area of study.
3. Students attending a national conference when serving as elected officers of a related regional or national organization.
Option 3: Up to $7501 may be awarded for travel expenses when studying in programs, organizations, and institutes beyond the KU campus leading to professional development in the arts. This component of the fund is highly competitive with a limited number of awards made each year. Travel for study might include:
1. Travel within the United States to participate in master classes, workshops, or residencies as appropriate within the arts disciplines in the School of the Arts.
2. Travel outside the United States in study abroad programs lead by KU faculty. 1 Depends on available funding
Paid Internship Opportunity with The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy is looking for two qualified students from FMS to shoot and edit four short documentary videos during the 2013-14 school year. The aim of the work is to encourage greater aware-ness of natural life and landscape in Kansas, and the mission of The Nature Conservancy as well. You must be able to provide your own transportation and be available for several days of travel around the state beginning Fall 2013.
This is a paid internship, and will qualify for FMS 307 Undergraduate Internship credit. Credit hours are negotiable from 1-3 hours.
Students must have declared Film and Media Studies as a major in order to apply. Preference will be given to students with substantial FMS course experience, and students who are in their Senior year of under-graduate study.
