3. DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT/COMMITTEE STRUCTURE 2011

ADMISSIONS TEAM - Dr D Allwood – Admissions Tutor - Dr R P Thackray – Admissions Tutor (Overseas) - Dr P Kapranos – Postgraduate Admissions Tutor - Mrs L C Mason – Admissions Secretary - Mrs K Burton – Postgraduate Admissions Secretary - Dr R Goodall - Dr M Jackson - Dr F Claeyssens The Admissions Team oversees all aspects of recruitment to undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses offered by the department. Louise Mason and Dan Allwood oversee the administration of undergraduate admissions. Louise Mason is responsible for day-to-day communication with the University’s Admissions Department. Dan Allwood is responsible for decision-making on individual offers and for setting entry grade requirements. Dan Allwood also sits on the Recruitment and Admissions Forum, which has oversight of all taught course admissions to the Engineering Faculty. The main focus of undergraduate recruitment is the UCAS Open Days to which we invite all applicants. We expect a large majority of home applicants and some overseas applicants to attend these days. Dan Allwood, Russell Goodall, Martin Jackson and Louise Mason are responsible for organising and delivering UCAS days, while Fred Claeyssens includes a tour and course presentation on the Materials

Science and Engineering (Biomaterials) degree. We would normally have six UCAS days in an application cycle. The days are very diverse, including presentations on the course and department, on aspects of materials research (including a research laboratory tour), and one by former students on their impressions of the department. We also include an interview with a staff member (chosen from across the department), opportunities for applicants to meet staff and students, accommodation talks and a tour of the Student Union and Information Commons. Plato Kapranos oversees postgraduate taught course admissions and is assisted in administration by Karen Burton. The process starts at the Admissions Section of the University where electronic applications are processed within two working days and forwarded to the relevant department. At the departmental level we have a target of processing the applications within one week, where possible, i.e. when information is available for a decision to be made. The prospective students should receive a decision on their application within four weeks. When cases are borderline and require further consideration, interviews are conducted either by phone or in person, as appropriate. Occasionally, if overseas candidates are on the borderline of their English language requirements, offers can be made provided that the students undertake remedial English courses of appropriate length and level as recommended by the English Language Teaching Centre of the University. The Admissions Team and Outreach Team liaise over University Open Days and schools activities since these both play a role in attracting applicants to the department. This includes overseeing programme specifications, regulations, timetabling, assessment and course booklets, developing teaching and learning strategies and responding to new Faculty and University policies, external examiners reports and issues raised by the Departmental Teaching Quality, Departmental Post-Graduate Taught Courses and Staff-Student Committees. Typically 4 meetings are scheduled in the academic year (September, January, March & July) with additional meetings as necessary. An annual Teaching Away-Day is also held in June, where development issues are discussed and also to monitor the quality of all aspects of teaching in the

In executing its function of monitoring teaching quality, the former DTQC introduced a number of measures including module questionnaires, module reviews and year reviews, which have been recognised by both the University and the Faculty of Engineering as examples of good practice. This includes all interaction with the public and in particular schools (at pre-application stages), and as a result can take many forms, from schools visiting the department for open days, to members of the department going out to schools to present to classes on many different aspects of materials science and engineering and the research that we do. Throughout the year the committee organises a number of regular events, including the Headstart Summer School, IoM3 Open Days and Science and Engineering Taster Days, and also represents the department at

A Postgraduate Supervision and Assessment document listing milestones and key procedures is regularly updated to ensure students and supervisors are aware of current requirements. This document is circulated to staff and students through the Department Handbook. A spreadsheet of the progress of all current PhD’s is continually updated by Ann Newbould including details of the Research Training Programme (RTP)/Doctoral Development Programme (DDP) courses completed, first year report, seminar and upgrade status, second year poster and report, final year seminars, theses and viva results. The committee is also responsible for liaising with the Engineering Faculty Research Office and the University Graduate Research Office and for organising the departmental research seminar series. To assist incoming students, a Departmental tour is arranged in the first week of the autumn semester as part of the 2-day Introduction to Research Techniques course. A second tour and introductory course is arranged in February for late arrivals. The committee also recommends the award of postgraduate prizes. The Postgraduate Teaching Committee was established to manage the taught course modules and to deal with enquiries and applications. Furthermore, the newly established New Route Doctorate in Advanced Materials, which combines a taught MSc with a research PhD, needs additional courses for the Doctoral Development Programme. Additional MSc courses are planned for the future, so the membership will be continuously under review. The main remit is to monitor course delivery and student progression. Dr Zhang represents the Postgraduate Taught Courses Committee on the Departmental Learning and Teaching Committee. The committee has dedicated much of its time to evaluating the impact of our new Centres for Doctoral Training on PG teaching. This is all very positive, and has given us the opportunity to consider new modules, and some other restructuring. All PG delivery will be using block teaching from next session. This is to ensure the best interface to the CDTs. The committee recommends the research strategies adopted by the Department, including issues relating to all forms of research output, external partnerships, internal collaborations, investment in the research base, and research quality. It acts to pool relevant information and intelligence and to disseminate research opportunities. It monitors PhD and DTC admissions, scholarships, fee waivers etc, and overviews PhD and DTC progression. It also monitors industrial relations and industrial income (e.g. KTPs). It feeds back into the Faculty Graduate Research Committee. Finally, the committee will oversee the approach to future RAE/REF assessment processes. STAFF MEETINGS Meetings of all academic staff are held at the beginning of each Semester. A third meeting is held mid-May. Reports are received from Management Committee members. The Departmental Staff-Student Committee is convened by Dr Russell Goodall. The convenor is responsible for establishing the membership of the committee and organising 4 meetings per year. All members of the committee are sought on a voluntary basis. Student members act as representatives of their fellow students, while there is also appropriate representation from academic, technical and administrative staff. Chairmanship of the committee is rotated between Dr Goodall and a Student Representative. The Committee aims to meet in weeks 3 and 9 of each semester. The atmosphere of the SSC meeting is always cordial and constructive. Staff and students have the opportunity to raise and discuss a number of items centred on improving services in the Department for undergraduates and postgraduates. Minutes (confirmed) are available to all staff and students via the Staff-Student Committee web page on MUSE http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/materials/staff/committees/staffstudent.html. The information on SSC activities and recommendations are also passed on to the Students’ Union, as appropriate. The BRUNTON MEDAL AND PREMIUM (METALLURGY) – PhD Students Sinan Al-Bermani and Glenn Cassar. CONGRATULATIONS TO: Mehul Chavda, a 1st year PhD student in Immobilisation Science Laboratory won the ASME Award - Best Poster/Paper at the WM2011 Conference held in February 27 March 3, 2011 at Phoenix, AZ, USA. His poster discussed ‘Low Temperature SiC Synthesis Route to Immobilize Irradiated Graphite Waste’ which was undertaken under supervision of Dr Michael Ojovan and Dr Shaowei Zhang. Dr Tom Hayward who has been awarded a prestigious EPSRC Career Acceleration fellowship. Tom is currently working with Dr Dan Allwood developing novel techniques for manipulating ultra-cold paramagnetic atoms using the magnetic fringing fields created by ferromagnetic nanostructures. His fellowship, which lasts for five years, will now allow Tom to develop his career as an independent researcher. The award is entitled "Magnetism You Can Rely On: Understanding Stochastic Behaviour in Nanomagnetic devices". Dr John Hinton who was awarded an Outstanding Poster Award for “The Effect of High Temperature Grain Refinement on the Isothermal Ferrite Grain Growth Kinetics in Steel S460’ at the 4th Recrystallization and Grain Growth Conference held in Sheffield in July 2010. Oday Hussein, a 3rd year PhD student at Immobilisation Science Laboratory won the 1st prize in a poster competition at the Conference of Engineering Sciences, held at the University College London on 1-2 October 2011. His poster presented his recent work on immobilisation of NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) scale from oil industry. Oday has been working with Dr Hajime Kinoshita and Dr Michael Ojovan. The conference was organised by Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with Al Kandi Association of Engineers and Iraqi Academic Association. Prof Allan Matthews who has been awarded the IOM3 Gold Medal. The citation mentions his work especially in transferring laboratory-based surface engineering technologies to industry. Caroline Smith (MEng: Supervisors Prof Sheila MacNeil and Dr Steve Matcher) who was awarded the ‘JRI Prize for Best Poster Presentation” at the Annual Medical Engineering Student project Competition, Institute of Mechanical Engineers, February 2011. Lin Sun (PhD student) who was presented with an Outstanding Young Scientist Prize and also Best Talk Awarded for his presentation, “The effect of strain path reversal during austenite deformation on phase transformation in a microalloyed steel subjected to accelerated cooling”, at the 4th Recrystallization and Grain Growth Conference held in Sheffield in July 2010. The number of overseas applications also fell from 167 applications in 2009/10 to 156 in 2010/11. Our total first year intake in October 2011 was 30 Home/EU students, and 25 overseas students. With 47 starting on Materials Science and Engineering & related courses, 3 on Materials Science and Engineering (Biomaterials), and 5 on Aerospace Materials. A number of students were recruited, as in previous years, from the Sheffield International College, and the Department again benefited from faculty overseas recruitment activities in India, China and South East Asia. Dr Dan Allwood’s statement: The reduction in undergraduate applications in the 2010/11 cycle was due to the establishment of the Bioengineering degree (administered by the Faculty of Engineering) accompanied by the cessation of the Department’s Biomedical Engineering degree and recoding of Biomaterials Science and Tissue Engineering (JH5P/JH56). The cycle numbers, therefore, relate only to Materials Science and Engineering and related degrees. Viewed in this light, the 2010/11 applications cycle was very successful. We were able to double our home/EU student intake while maintaining our overseas student numbers. We revamped our Open Day, refreshing the lab demonstrations and introducing student talks on the MEng project placement. This resulted in an increase in the ‘strike rate’ of home/EU applicants choosing Materials Science and Engineering in Sheffield as their first choice from a little over 20 % in the previous cycle to 35 % in 2010/11. As ever, my deep thanks go to all staff and students who assisted in Open Day arrangements. Forward Look for 2011/12 The recruitment cycle for Sept 2012 entry is subject to considerable uncertainty across the sector due to changes in government funding of students and universities. Many of these are as yet unresolved.

Nevertheless, we have every reason to be confident given last year’s strong recruitment. We have increased our entry requirements to AAB (at A-level) for all MEng degrees and BBB/ABC for all BEng degrees. This is a bold step with the various changes taking place in the sector but we believe is justified given the application numbers we have seen previously. The Undergraduate Admissions Team remains unchanged from last year, consisting of Dr Dan Allwood (Director of Undergraduate Admissions), Dr Richard Thackray (Overseas Admissions Tutor), Mrs Louise Mason (administration), Dr Russell Goodall and Dr Martin Jackson. A large number of other staff assist in interviewing students at Open Days. Our undergraduate recruitment targets for the coming cycle are to maintain home entry while growing overseas numbers. However, we have changed our overseas recruitment strategy this year to reduce the time applicants have to wait to receive an offer and speak to a member of staff. We hope that this will bring our overseas student numbers up to parity with home students. The panel comprised two external assessors, two academic assessors from other Faculties, a student assessor, a LeTS representative and an International Advocate. Through the two days they looked at all our taught provision (UG through to DDP) and interviewed appropriate committees, key staff, the students and viewed the teaching facilities. The committee commended our performance in many areas, in particular our MEng industrial placements, the breadth of our courses, the employability of our graduates, our final year project provision, the integration of the technician teams into teaching, and our outstanding achievements in developing online activities and supporting material. In addition, there were several recommendations for improvement at both Departmental and Faculty level – many of which we had already identified and acted upon. For example, we have produced a 10-point plan for providing high-quality student feedback, which will be implemented in early 2012, and have begun discussions to address the complexity of some of the courses we offer at both UG and PGT level in an effort to improve teaching efficiency. We look forward to taking these, and other ideas forward, and to aligning our strategic direction in this area with the University Learning and Teaching Strategy, which will be formally launched in Q2 of 2012 The other significant development in L&T was the formal introduction of 4 cross faculty teaching modules. Beginning in autumn 2011, our staff delivered these modules to 1st and 2nd year Civil and Structural,

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering students. Each module has a major practical element associated with it, which necessitated the design of new laboratory practicals, associated online exercises and feedback mechanisms in order to cope with the large numbers of students registered on these modules. These laboratory sessions have been held in the new departmental teaching space in the BioIncubator building. Early indications are that these modules have been very well received by the students, particularly the challenging extended practicals, and from the academic year 2012/13, much of the module content will be incorporated into departmental UG degree programmes and delivered to Materials Science students. We continue to be concerned with the issues of ensuring competence in English and Mathematics for all new undergraduate students. The procedure of requiring all arriving students – whether home or overseas - to take a diagnostic test (arranged by the English Language Teaching Centre) is now well embedded. We use these tests to identify students with particular problems and direct them to the help available from the University Centre. We also support the University-wide Mathematics and Statistics Help (MASH) initiative and our students are among the major users of this facility. Undergraduate Taught Courses Descriptions

A) Bioengineering Biomaterial Science and Tissue Engineering (BEng/MEng)

Biomedical Engineering (BEng/MEng) The bioengineering courses (BSTE and BME) are aimed at training students for careers in hospitals, in the healthcare industry and in research. They also develop strong multidisciplinary skills in students required by industry and in applied research. 2011 saw a significant development of the undergraduate Bioengineering courses, being associated with major changes in the organisation the degrees. While BME is organised out of Faculty of Engineering Interdisciplinary Programmes in 2010, BSTE remains within the department. However, both programmes have stopped enrolment from 2011, being replaced by a faculty-wide common first year entry Bioengineering programme, which this department continues to play a significant role, with BME and BSTE forming two of the four specialism streams. This programme, headed by Professor Sheila MacNeil of this department, has been successfully launched and enrolled its first intake of 39 students in September 2011. At the same time, the department launched and enrolled its first batch of 4 students onto its Materials Science and Engineering (Biomaterials) programme, which most closely match BSTE. The BME programme is concerned with the application of engineering principles and skills to analyse and solve problems in medicine and biology for enhancing healthcare. The programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and is now one of the few accredited BME degree programmes in the country. To strengthen cohesion, depth and choice of specialisations and to adapt to the dynamic biomedical engineering industries, the course structure has been greatly enhanced in the past two years. For example, in 2009/10 a much-revised MAT191 Introduction to Biomedical Engineering at Level 1 and MAT3410 Design of Medical Devices and Implants at Level 3/4 were offered, while MAS248 Mathematics III (Chemical) replaced MAS244 (Control). ENG302 Robot Technology, ACS408 Optimisation and Search, ACS416 Non-linear Systems, CPE412 Engineering Biotechnology, and MEC421 Sports Engineering were added to give students a broader choice of modules suitable for BME at Levels 3/4. MEC430 Solid Biomechanics was added in 2010/11. Students on the BME programme are not only supported by dedicated staffs at the Interdisciplinary Programmes Office, but also by a personal tutorial system involving academic staff members to provide better small group pastoral support, along with a proactive Staff-Student Committee. The Faculty Library resources have also been enhanced to provide BME/Bioengineering better support. 2011 has been a year of remarkable achievements. For the first time, the BME Undergraduate Research Day

was held and attended not only by students and academic staffs, but also by invited industrial participants. Students in their final years of studies presented their projects on the podium as well as in posters. A panel of judges consisting of members from academic staff and industry, chose the 3 best poster presentations which were awarded prizes by Professor Mike Hounslow, our Pro-Vice Chancellor. In 2011, the BME programme produced 24 graduates. At the MEng level, 9 graduates received 1st Class degrees while the others received Upper 2nd Class degree. At the BEng level, 5 graduates each received 1st Class and Upper 2nd Class degrees and 2 graduates received the Lower 2nd Class degrees. A total of 7 MEng graduates and 1 BEng graduate were awarded the Sheffield Graduate Award. Miss Man-Ting Kwong, was awarded the JRI Prize while Miss Caroline Wilcock was awarded the Mappin Medal and Premium in Interdisciplinary Programmes in Engineering. Notably, Miss Caroline Smith won the JRI Prize for Best Poster Presentation at the 23rd Annual Medical Engineering Student Project Competition in London, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The BSTE course is predominantly concerned with the use of synthetic and natural materials in medical and biological applications, and provides an excellent basis for working at the life science – physical science interface. It is also accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), in parallel with the MSE degree. The 2010/11 academic year saw 6 students graduating, of which 3 students achieved Upper 2nd Class degree from either the BEng or MEng programme. While our graduates are doing very well either pursuing graduate studies or working in various sectors, our students continuing their studies on these courses have always been (and continued to be) very interested in opportunities for career development and for further applying their learned knowledge. For example, a number of BME students took part in the SURE (Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience) scheme during summer vacation while some are involved in voluntary works and others are active working on projects associated with Engineers Without Borders.

B) MEng Course in Materials Science and Engineering This 4-year course continues to attract high quality students who are hoping to pursue a career in either industry or research and who have exhibited a satisfactory level of academic achievement in years 1 and 2. The MEng course differs from the BEng course in many ways, and the main differences are discussed below. In year 3 the students are expected to undertake a 5-month placement at home or abroad, where they can gain invaluable experience in industry or a research environment. On return from their placement, at the beginning of year 4, the students participate in a semester-long group industrial project in collaboration with industry. They are presented with real industrial problems, and have to work in groups in order to propose a workable solution. Both the industrial partners and the student cohort understand the importance of this project, which has been running in various forms for 9 years. In 2011, there were 14 students registered on the MEng course – placement destinations included Philips Applied Research, Siemens VAI, Sheffield Forgemasters, Tata Steel, Metalysis, NetComposites, AETC, Gripple and Morgan Technical Ceramics. Again the students benefited from links with visiting professors, the assistance of Steve Franklin at Philips and Jesus Talamantes Silva at Sheffield Forgemasters provided the opportunity for 2 students to undertake their placement in Holland, and 1 to carry out research at Forgemasters. It is hope that these placement partnerships will continue well into the future, and that others can be created so that our students are able to take their placements in a wide range of materials–related disciplines. The 2011 group industrial project was entitled “The Making of Steel Rod” and was run in conjunction with our long term partners in this module, Tata Steel and Siemens Metals Technologies. The project was split

into 2 parts, with the first 5 weeks of semester devoted to students working in their groups to produce a report on steel rod production, covering such topics as rod metallurgy, markets for steel rod and bar applications, a forecast of demand for steel rod applications, and a review of new technologies for the production of steel rod. The second half of the project started with a visit to Tata Steels Scunthorpe Works where the students were given a tour of steelmaking operations, ending with a guided tour around the Rod and Bar Mill. The day ended with each group being given an information pack containing test samples, mechanical property results, feedstock chemistries, steelmaking data and rolling parameters relating to 3 common steel rod components. The groups then spent the remaining 5 weeks of semester matching the chemistries, schedules and test results to the correct steel rod application, and providing evidence to justify their final choice. A Q&A session was held in week 9 in which representatives of the industrial partners were on hand to answer the students questions, and to set them further challenges. The grand finale was held in December at Tata Steel RD&T in Rotherham where the 3 groups presented a summary of their findings over the semester to an audience made up of senior researchers and technologists from both of the sponsoring companies. As always we are grateful to our industrial partners for their continued support in this project, and look forward to running something similar in future years. Feedback of student performance from employers and industrial sponsors for both placements and projects, has as in previous years been excellent.

C) Exchange Students

In 2011/12 the Department hosted total of 10 exchange students from several overseas institutions. Through the Erasmus exchange scheme, 6 students studied in our department: Sarah Costa (University of Aveiro, Portogal); Lea Cuchet and Jonas Lambart (Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, France); Christoph Jachs and Marcus Preisinger (Montanuniversitat Leoben, Austria); Maria Rinkkala (Tampere University of Technology, Finland). Through the exchange programme with Alfred University New York exclusive to our department, Tracie McGinnity (Alfred University New York, USA) studied in our department. In addition, 3 students came to our department through the Study Abroad Scheme of the University: Tanjiao Cai (Drexel University, USA); Karishma Jadeja (University of California Riverside, USA); Mingde Qin (City University of HongKong, China).

D) Contact of Undergraduates with Industry

The four year MEng course is designed primarily for those who wish to pursue careers in the materials producing and using industries as process technologists, managers or researchers. A distinctive and important feature of the course is an industrial placement undertaken towards the end of year 3 (between May and September). The objectives of the placement are to provide an insight into the work of a professional engineer in industry and enable the student to put into context the material taught within the University-based part of the course. To meet these objectives the placement involves the following:-

• Induction Period: Health and Safety, Management Structure, Company Products, Processing Sequence. • Project Work: Ideally one or two substantive projects which would have the aim of achieving an

improvement in processing route, product quality or materials selection. • Works Organisation and Business Appreciation: During their period of employment it is hoped that students

would be given the opportunity to gain an awareness of some of the following aspects of the company’s

activities: Product Development and Design; Quality Assurance Control; Industrial Relations; Cost Control; Marketing; Customer Liaison; Use of Business and Industrial Software; Project Management.

SKILLS WEEK: 7-11 NOVEMBER 2011 The departmental Skills Week under the leadership of Dr Plato Kapranos run as planned between the 7th and 11th of November 2011. A total of 49 students were involved in the various activities that included ‘Talks on Careers’, ‘IOM3 Membership’, the activities of UKCME, Talk & exercises on plagiarism, Talks and activities on Communication & Team Work, Introduction & activities to Creativity & Enterprise, English Support class & practical exercises, Introduction to the activities of EWB. Two alumni currently working in UK industry (Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering & Timet respectively) gave presentations on their personal transitions from University to responsible positions in industry. In addition to the above, the students tackled a group project of their choice throughout the week and presented their solutions as groups at the end of the week competing for prizes as well as peer assessing their performances. The traditional industrial visit to Guardian Glass in Goole was successfully carried out and was well received by the students.

Destination of MEng 3rd Year Placement Students April – Sept 2011 Below are brief notes on the experiences of four of the students who were given placements: Zhaoyuan Leong “The placement at Morgan Technical Ceramics was a great opportunity, enabling me put the materials science knowledge gained at university into an industrial perspective. The placement has helped me to develop my communication skills and self-confidence in working independently to achieve my project’s goals. All in all the experience has instilled in me a strong work ethic and tempered my technical expertise in engineering, which will most definitely be useful in the future. I have also had the opportunity to meet and make new friends, which was rewarding.”

John Butterworth “During my placement at Gripple I visited and witness manufacturing on an industrial scale; including glass bottles, zinc diecasting, injection moulding and various steel casting methods. I worked as part of a design team using engineering skills to design new products. I learnt marketing and design skills as well as building on the engineering skills I have learnt at university during my first 3 years. I have gained a lot from the placement experience, putting lectures into good use, both practically and in design work. I have worked with a variety of people and gained many great contacts in the industry and learnt how to communicate with them effectively in my role as a design engineer.” Daniel Bailey “I have gained good experience in the production of steel plate from steel slabs. I have also improved my ability to program through my experiences with microstructural modelling. My work on microstructure modelling attempted to identify and solve problems associated with models currently used by Siemens VAI. The investigation has improved my knowledge of how companies such as Siemens VAI attempt to predict the finished microstructure of their products and has introduced important theories and principles such as the principle of additivity. I also investigated the production of clad steel plate by the process of hot roll bonding. Through this investigation I have learnt the basic processing principles of hot roll bonding and its associated problems and solutions.” James Powell “The main project of my placement has been to develop and implement a computer based training aid for new operators within the foundry. This aid produced on power point is designed to replace and supplement existing written documentation and allow the user to learn in a more interactive and exciting way. By developing this training aid I have personally learnt a large amount of in-depth knowledge into the casting process of aerospace and industrial gas turbine blades and vanes, this has then allowed me to improve existing documentation and operations in the casting process.”

Admissions for session 2011/12 ran at MSc (Eng) MSc Polymers and Polymer Composite Science and Engineering 13 students, MMet Advanced Metallurgy 11 students, MSc Aerospace Materials 10 students, MSc Nuclear Science & Technology 1 student, MSc Ceramics & Science Engineering 7 students, MSc Nanomaterials for Nanoengineering 8 students, MSc Bionanotechnology 7 students, MSc Biomaterials & Regenerative Medicine 2 students, a grand total entry of 66 students. The Department is deeply involved in the ‘Nanofolio’ portfolio (http://www.nanofolio.org/) of MSc courses in the area of nanotechnology, run jointly between the University of Sheffield and the University of Leeds. The economies of scale and appropriate multi-use of modules makes this a very attractive route for the development of new MSc programmes. We are already making use of the New Route Doctoral degrees, offering Integrated PhD study with one of our MSc courses as a front-end. Interest from applicants in this route is growing.

The success of the Department in attracting funding for three Centres for Doctoral Training and a new Engineering Doctorate scheme, will give us the opportunity to consider new and enhanced courses in the near future. 7.3 Research Students This year the total intake of research students for the academic year 20011-12 was 57. This compares with 42 and 34 in each of the previous two years. The 27 UK entrants were all funded through EPSRC/BBSRC. Of the 30 overseas entrants, 2 were funded by their government, 1 were funded through EPSRC , 16 with Department fee waivers, 2 China/UK Scholarship award, 1 through overseas University scholarships, 1 through EU grant and 7 self funded. The research topics of these students were distributed as 7 in biomaterials and tissue engineering, 11 in Ceramics, 10 in Glasses, Cements and Waste Immobilisation, 21 in Metallurgy, 3 in polymers and Composites, 2 in Modelling and 3 in Magnetics. 32 students were awarded a PhD, 1 EngD, 1 MPhil qualification in 2011. 7.4 Research Colloquia

The Metallurgy of Iron & Steel – for non-experts short course will run again between the 7-11 January 2013. The Fundamentals of Metallurgy developed for AWE was opened up to the general public and will run again between the 25- 29 June 2012.

9. MACUS/SUMAC The financial climate has caused a marked reduction in the volume of business that MARCUS/SUMAC has undertaken. The main contributor continues to be thermo-mechanical processing and testing and to a lesser degree glass making and sales of refractory oxide crucibles. The relationship with customers is positive and we continue to receive many enquiries but the uptake of work is low.

10. THE TURNER MUSEUM

The space in the Turner Museum continues to act as the social heart of the Department and the venue for UCAS recruitment days. Parents and prospective students alike compliment the museum and its collection as a welcoming location for their important visit. It is also recognized as an important part of the heritage of both the University and the City. Prof J Parker took over as curator for the collection in 2011 and has already participated in the preparation of one minute film clip to be published on the web, as part of a collection of 23 other clips each representing one hour in the life of the city. Another expression of interest concerns the making of an educational film around the story of the glass fibre wedding dress on display here. To maintain and develop this asset we need to build on our existing links with the Arts Fund and create links to other related bodies. As an aid to this process a committee of interested people from inside and outside of the University is being assembled. Preparations have already started to celebrate the centenary of Prof Turner’s appointment to the University. These include both a history of his achievements and also an International Conference on Glass.

The Turner Museum hosts the Sheffield University Fine Art Society (SUFAS) and during 2011 the Turner Museum hosted five exhibitions by Runima Kakoty, Peter Marsh, Rebecca Webster, Anthony Ogden, Graham Firth and an Open Members Exhibition. 11. The Hatfield Memorial Lecture The 59th Hatfield Memorial Lecture was held at The University of Sheffield on Tuesday 6th December 2011. The Speaker was Professor George Smith FRS, of Oxford University, who looked back over his long career examining the structure of materials at the atomic scale. The focus of his talk, which was entitled “How Safe is That Nuclear Reactor?” was a timely look at the materials used in nuclear power plants, and the current state of the UK's knowledge base in the field.

Emeritus Prof Frank Jones • Gave a research colloquium at RMIT, in Melbourne, April 2011, on “Interfaces and Interphases or

How to Optimise the Mechanical Properties of Fibre Composites?”. He also contributed to a meeting of the composites research group headed by Prof Adrian Mouritz and Dr Stefanie Feih where synopses of projects were presented. He also met up with a former MSc student, Gleny Chirima who finished a PhD at University of Bolton before heading to RMIT as a post doctoral fellow.

• Visited the Composites Research Centre(CRC) to give an invited lecture to the Australian Composites Structures Society on “From Atoms to Aeroplanes–Towards Multi-scale Modelling and Design of Composites”, Australian Composites Society, at the CRC/ DSTO laboratory in Melbourne. He met up with Director of the CRC, Prof Murray Scott who is well known in the discipline. He was also able to meet up with former colleagues, Prof John Beynon, Prof Sally MacArthur and Prof Anjay Kapoor who are now at Swinburne University, in Melbourne.

Dr Plato Kapranos • Acted as external examiner on a PhD thesis at the Technical University of Mondragon, Spain. The

theme of the work was 'An investigation on the reasons behind the lack of commercial applications of semi-solid manufacturing technologies in the European automotive market, based on the factors of productivity, competitiveness, quality and cost.' Whilst there, he also spend one day carrying out experimental lab work on thixoforming low alloy steels, with his colleagues at Mondragon.

Dr Hajime Kinoshita

• Invited to give a series of lectures on the pre-disposal technologies for radioactive wastes at the IAEA’s training course in radioactive waste management, Clausthal, Germany, 12-16 September 2011, to participants selected by IAEA worldwide.

• Gave an invited lecture “Ceramics or cements? - Alternative cement systems and beyond” at GLOBAL 2011, Makuhari, Japan, 11-16 December 2011, the special focus of which was the Fukushima Daiichi accident following the devastating earthquake and consequent tsunami which attacked East Japan on 11 March 2011.

• Examined the the PhD Thesis of Xiao Ma (a former undergraduate student in the Department) at the University of Twente in The Netherlands on 11 February 2011. The thesis title was “Surface Quality of Aluminium Extrusion Products”. He also visited the Tribology Laboratory of Prof D Schipper (http://www.utwente.nl/ctw/tr/Research/).

• Attended the Society of Vacuum Coaters “Techcon” Conference in Chicago USA, 16-20 April. He participated in Conference Planning Meetings and co-hosted (with Dr B Sproul) a Technology Forum Breakfast on Tribological Coatings, as well as presenting a half-day Short Course on Tribological Coatings. He was co-author (with Dr John Eichler and Dr Adrian Leyland) of the Poster Paper “A Comparative Study of Impact Testing Techniques and Results for Carbon Based Coatings”. He also co-chaired the Tribological Coatings session at the conference.

• Attended the International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF), held in San Diego, USA, 30 April–3 May together with PhD Students, Po-Jen Chu, Chen-Jui Liang and Omeniyi Fasuba. Their papers (co-authored with Dr Aleksey Yerokhin) were as follows: “Effect of (Poly)Phosphate Anion Structure on Characteristics of Pulsed DC PEO Coatings on Ti, for Dye Sensitised Solar Cell Applications”, “Effects of Coating Morphology on in-situ Impedance Spectra of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Process” and “Galvanic Corrosion Behaviour of Al-Based Coatings in 0.6M NaCl Solution”. Dr Adrian Leyland was also a co-author on the last paper. • Attended and presented an Invited Plenary paper at the 6th China International Conference on Surface Engineering in Xi’an, China, 10–13 May. His paper was entitled “Enhanced Tribo-contact Performance Using Plasma-Assisted Surface Engineering Processes”. He also Chaired a Plenary session at the Conference. Whilst in China, Allan visited Yanshan University in Qiuhuangdao, where he met Prof Yulin Yang, the Vice-President (who is one of Allan’s former PhD Students) and his colleagues.

• Presented a talk at the Surface Engineering Association’s Annual Conference, 14 October 2011 in Meriden. The title of the talk was “Industry Trends and Growing Markets in the UK”.

Emeritus Prof John M Parker

• Was an invited guest at the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (a unit of CSIR), Kolkata, India from 3-5 August 2011. He also presented an invited lecture entitled “Modelling the optical absorption spectrum of glass” at the International Conference on Specialty Glass & Optical Fiber: Materials, Technology and Devices, ICGF-2011, organised as part of their diamond jubilee celebrations.

• Attended a conference in Accra, Ghana from 15-20 January jointly organised by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and British Council; in the latter case the emphasis was on AKTPs, a scheme mirroring the British Knowledge Transfer Partnerships but with African Associates. This event provided an opportunity to talk to researchers and educationalists from many African Countries and further afield. Most speakers were very optimistic about the economic and political futures of their countries, although a common concern was for a growing population of unemployed graduates. Two institutions in particular were keen to create links with Sheffield, one with our Biomedical Engineers and the second with both ceramists and metallurgists.

• Represented the Department at the the 4th World Materials Research Institute Forum, which was held at the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Science, Shenyang, China. The Forum is held every two years as a summit conference for the materials research institutes from all over the world to share the issues concerning management and operation of the institutes, consequently leading to more efficient research and development. It was an excellent meeting. The main theme of the forum was "Materials Challenges for Safety and Reliability", and the the Symposium was divided into four topics, "Design and fabrication of high-performance materials", "Characterization and evaluation of advanced materials", "Property and performance of advanced materials" and "Applications of advanced materials", including plenary presentations by 18 invited speakers. The number of member institutes increased from 44 to 47, an important point to note is that we are the only department of a university in the World allowed to have this prestigious membership.
